anything that deals with social structures is politically charged. literally discussing the organization and operation of society, and that is, by its very nature, political.

it is you who assumed i was arguing, falsely, that only the right bullies.

Being bullied forced me to improve my physical strength and learn how to defend myself. I don't recommend it as a learning strategy but that's how it worked on me.

I wasn't assuming you were saying only the right bullies. I was simply pointing to the "social progress" bullies. -Bake the damn Rainbow cake, Bigot! is the perfect example of group bullying.

you are fighting windmills.

Edit: I have to do this. It is "tilting at windmills." “The ingenious Knight of La Mancha” is an incredibly popular book in the Spanish language. For most Spanish people, this book has the same significance as “pride and prejudice” “1984” or “to kill a mockingbird”.

This story follows the adventures of Don Quixote, a knight who fights injustice through chivalry. Think of him as being a Spanish version of Sir Lancelot.

The book was written by a Spanish author, Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra.

I feel better.

Carry on.

carry on.

Can we have you two get a room so the conversation gets back to the OP's point?

It is a fascinating topic that is not PARF worthy.

anyone interested in more understanding of social structures, and bullying as way to enforce social norms ... its pretty much philo 101: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Foucault

it can basically be summarized by, there are major benefits of bullying for people who are a part of the current power structure. it continues to enforce that structure that gives you power. if you are not part of the current power structure, then bullying is probably bad for you.

100% agree. A good leader can be strong and assertive, but definitely not a “bully” in the true sense of the word. Those that are do not have happy nor productive employees for very long.

BTW, I was tall and athletic as a kid...nearly 6' at twelve and grew to 6'4' in HS. I never bullied a soul because I simply was not raised that way. If I bullied anyone I don't know who would have gotten to me first, my Mother or my Father. Completely unacceptable.

Bullying is learned behavior. I never met a bully that didn't have issues.

But I also learned how to fight and that is, unfortunately, the 90% anecdote to bullying....not fair but life isn't.

Edit: Work place bullying makes me crazy.

I read the OP's post as how does bullying help the species to evolve, not the individual or a particular society. Do bullies cause smaller but smarter organisms to engage the fight in a creative way that helps with the evolution? Or, do bullies toughen up the overall strength that allows the lizard brain of the species to fight off greater and greater physical challenges to the population?

Or, an absence of a parent...one or both.

And, btw, young women are by in large incredible bullies; different in approach, no less a problem.

Exactly. Back in the "old days," (I grew up in the 80s/90s), encountering a bully left you with 2 options: learn to fight, or learn to endure life as a victim.

+1 to the first statement.
To the second, I would add "usually, they collapse"

In the demented mind of a bully, fear of them means they get respect. In reality it is the opposite.

The only way to deal with a bully is to put a hurt on them and thats from my experience in High School. I was pushed around by this guy much taller then me in gym class (freshman). It was the classic Marty McFly Biff encounter. He elbowed me during basketball games, pushed,. shoved, and verbally abused me for weeks. When I got home, I told my parents and my father simply said, "son your a man to face your problems, but a bigger man to overcome them". With that one day I just grew a set of balls, walked up to him during a game, made a fist and like Marty McFly sent him to the floor with a very bloody nose. That finally shut him up and he left me alone and never picked on anyone else that I was aware of. BTW, yes, I had to go to the Principal's office for a long and loud chewing out!
So yes, it's in your DNA to "fight or flight" as a survival instinct. GOOD always over comes EVIL.

I totally agree. Some managers 'lead' through threats of termination. It does work quite well but only for a short while. Eventually, the employee becomes angry and does one of two things:
-retaliates by spreading discord and/or cheating the company
-gets to the place where they don't care and either quit or say "go ahead and fire me".

A good leader shows they care about their people and the people will go after H3ll with a water pistol if they ask them to.

I had the horrible experience of attending one year of high school in Waipahu, Hawaii. It sucked major league big time. I was personally 50% of the Haole or white population at that school. Every Friday was kill Haole day. The Fridays before Christmas break or any break was a special kill Haole day. I did not go to school on the last Friday of the year. No dang way.

Several boys made it their goal in life to torment me. Even if I tried to fight back, there was always a much bigger classmate, often a Samoan or two. Not even Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris at his prime could whip an entire school of classmates willing to put a hurt on him. Especially when I was a skinny 9th grader and many in the school were seniors and 275 pound Samoans.

I was laid out with a sucker punch out of nowhere right in front of the principal's office, and not one adult came out to help me, or investigate. Only my protector, the shop teacher a huge Samoan himself grabbed one of the biggest tormentors by the neck, and told him face to face if he bothers me again he will drag him out into the cane field and bury him. It was a year of hell.

The next year we moved on base at Hickam, AFB and I got to go to Radford, Hi and the population was 50-50 and they loved the government money from all the military dependent students and thre was no hint of racial bullying.

What about gang mentality? A bunch of bullies, or a bunch of cowards with a bully leader?
