The 914 I really wished for.

In 1974 I bought a new 914 2.0, and it was one I ordered to my specs. It was $6,750 bucks I kinda wanted a 911, but they were over 11 grand for a 911T. I knew the 914 6 GT race cars existed, but that might as well been a 911 RSR for mere mortals.

I did see one real 914 6 GT once, but it was just on static display.

This is a 41 minute video, but if you are a 914 fan, it is worth seeing it all.

That sound track could sell a couple of hundred records. Too bad they talked so much over the engine.

Porsche also built two 914-8s. Helmuth Bott drove one as a daily driver. Ferry Porsche got the other one. They had a steel roof to help with the stiffness. I guess the factory still has them somewhere.

Thanks for sharing. That was great. My first Porsche was a 914. I always loved that car.

I have driven many 914/6’s back when they were new. Unimpressed. I did however love driving the ‘74 2 liter 914. Still feel like if I was going to have one it would be the ‘74 2 liter version. My 2 cents.

I had one for 26 years. It was my only car, and of course my daily driver. It was a convenient excuse when friends asked me to help them move.

Shortly after I got married, my wife and I went on a fall foliage tour to Arkansas. I did not think anything about putting her luggage in the rear trunk. All of her makeup melted from the heat from the exhaust. She was not happy.

It was a blast at the hundreds and hundreds of autocrosses I did in it.

I always wanted one when I was a kid. I knew, back then it would be affordable and cool. A vw powered porsche that could be souped up to do some cool round town and off to college driving. Never found one.....

I had a 1975 that I converted to a GT clone . Metal fender flares and a 3.0 out of an SC . Converted to Weber carbs and had Fuchs wheels . Had it repainted in original L11 D paint code . It was a fun car 😁

The factory made a few 916s.

Steel roof, no targa. And they made it before the 914! One a few exist. It was faster than a 911 since it was only 2,000 pounds.

The one I wished for that I could actually afford. Chased a Bumblebee for a few years and finally got one. Next to my buddy's Cayenne at dinner last night. He has a bit of a 914 collection including a factory 6 and EP vintage racer. My others include a GT Tribute vintage racer and 1970 1.7.

WOW! This was a car decades ahead of its time. "Introduced at the Paris Auto Salon in 1917..."

Hi Paul...would love to see pics of yours......

Mine is a '72 with an updated engine. The 2.0 with the factory D-Jetronic fuel injection.

Very quick and fun to drive.

I never liked the larger (>4 cylinder) versions so am happy with what I have.

Different strokes for different folks.

Since these pics were taken, I swapped the wheels out to Fuchs.....

This is me in my 74 2.0 shortly after buying it. The print is rather faded. It was Olympia Blue. I am totally unchanged and look just like that, except I do have a gray beard.

Early on in the '80's. Taken from my dorm window:
