back in the day, I wanted a Blinder M40 or something like that. But now 15-20 years later, things may have changed.

It seems so.
Learning about them.
Seems like a viable solution for all the cops we have in this state.

I have the Escort Max 360 with arrows. I'm happy with it except it is heavy and occasionally falls off the windshield. I've pretty much solved that with the larger single suction cup but I like the "hang from the mirror bracket" shown on this thread.

I would like to find a detector that is suited for a motorcycle. I've used the 360 but I can't see it or hear it when I'm riding. I know it works on Bluetooth, but I don't like riding with earbuds for long periods.

IIRC, the recommendation was to hear the alert, jam on the brakes, and then disable the jammer so the cops would get a valid hit after you slow down. The theory being that it could take them a sec to get a good hit, but if they never got a valid hit it would set off their spidey sense.

Most states are also legal to own, according to two different websites .

Also part of the reason to jam the brakes and then turn it off.

But not federal like a radar jammer would be.

I ditched my Valentine radar detector decades ago. I was experiencing too many false alerts, and a lot less speed traps and highway patrol sightings. So far, so good.
Send it back to valentine and they will update it to the latest software… I did and no more false alarms… except Mazdas. It now detects cops… and Mazdas. It went from an annoying racket machine to a tool again.

You guys are really lucky (actually luck has nothing to do with it).

Radar detectors have been illegal in Australia for decades. Our cops have Radar detector detectors in their cars!

How does a $1,000+ fine sound?

Some provinces in Canada don’t allow radar detectors either. Manitoba is one.

I was in Manitoba for work several years ago. When I got done at the well site it was about midnight. I got to the hotel and the lady at the hotel told me they gave away my room. I had a 45 minute drive to the next town so I pulled out the radar detector. As soon as I turned it on, the only other car in town that was running switched in the cherries and blueberries…

I got a warning.

It turned out that that cop was my bosses brothers girlfriend and she was the only cop on shift in southern Manitoba that night…

Supposedly the detector was undetectable… it wasn’t.

Kay-beck they are illegal as well. The cop couldn't believe they were legal in the US, just across the border. He made me remove it and put it in the trunk.

They are illegal in Virginia and one other state (NJ?). I've heard that the detector detectors don't/shouldn't work with V1s, but I don't remember why.

The signal coming into the detector is mixed with an intermediate frequency (IF). The IF used in most detectors is common. Valentine changed the IF they used to defeat the detector detectors.

FYI - Detector detectors exist but are not in common use.

Radar detectors are illegal: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and Washington D.C. - Some of these are recent, since they were legal in NY when I lived there (20+ years ago). VA & DC they've been illegal since at least the 1980's.

Illegal here, Waze works great on highway. But on the highway most traffic moves faster than I do. More concerned about the locals running speedtraps.

https://www.escortradar.com/blogs/news/what-states-are-radar-detectors-illegal

Quote:
Radar detectors are not universally accepted across the United States. They are illegal for use in passenger vehicles in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

This legislation is strictly enforced, with fines and potential confiscation for violators. Elsewhere, laws can be less restrictive, but drivers need to stay informed about the specific regulations governing their travel routes.

Regulations around radar detectors vary significantly from one state to another within the United States, impacting their use in both private and commercial vehicles.
Private Vehicles

Iowa
In Iowa, the use of radar detectors in private vehicles is legal. However, drivers must ensure their devices do not obstruct their view of the road.

This means avoiding placement on the windshield or dashboard where it might block the driver's view of the road or mirrors. Drivers must install their devices correctly to stay compliant with state laws and ensure their safety.

Virginia
Our findings show that, in Virginia, the use of radar detectors in private vehicles is strictly illegal. Violations can lead to fines and device confiscation.

Drivers caught with a radar detector in their vehicle face the risk of fines, and law enforcement officers are authorized to confiscate the device. This law applies regardless of whether the radar detector is turned on or simply present in the vehicle.
where are radar detectors illegal

Minnesota And California
Are radar detectors legal in California? In both Minnesota and California, radar detectors are legal, but their placement in the vehicle is subject to strict regulations.

Both Minnesota and California allow the use of radar detectors in private vehicles. However, they share a specific legal stipulation: devices must not be mounted on the windshield.

This law aims to prevent obstruction of the driver's view, which can pose a safety hazard. Therefore, drivers must find alternative locations within their vehicle to place their radar detectors, like on the dashboard, provided they do not interfere with the driver's line of sight.

Other States
Across the majority of the United States, private vehicle owners can legally use radar detectors without facing the strict placement restrictions seen in states like Minnesota and California.

Valentine will give you a $110 credit towards a new one. They don’t reprogram the old ones anymore.
