Something to consider:

Many homeowner's insurance companies will not cover
claims involving dog bites from breeds like pit bulls,
german shepherds, dobies, etc.
Farmers is one example.

If you have a dog that falls into one of those categories,
even if only a partial mix,
you might want to call your agent and verify.

All it takes is a little nip at a stranger and the POS is filing a
law suit against you claiming permanent disability or such.
You could lose everything.

The person your dog bites is automatically a POS if they sue you?

In my opinion there is a big difference between " a little nip at a stranger " vs a person losing a limb or their life .

Who pays the medical bills? Who pays for any missed time at work?

If a stranger's dog bites me and breaks the skin, I'm seeing a doctor.

And therein lies a huge difference between pits and other breeds. The damage they inflict upon, and after the first bite.

Insurance companies are fairly competent in the area of actuarial science, and can therefore be considered an authority on the danger of pit bulls ... in the event that one finds a multitude of real-world anecdotal evidence insufficient.

I wonder if it's ok for someone's 10-year-old kid to give a stranger a friendly little punch in the sack?

My neighbors are a-holes. They leave their yappy dog outside all day, it just sits on their deck and barks. Last night it escaped, ran across the road, and bit a kid who had his back turned.

If that dog runs towards me, it's getting a free ride into the trees. Then to the creek for a quick burial.

Animal control will be dropping by tomorrow, I hope they take the dog away.

My dog bite story:

About 5 years ago I was playing golf on my club course and someone hit a ball just off the left side of the cart path. I was helping to look for it and I could hear a dog yapping in the house. Then I hear the sliding door and a guy shouting “this is private property!” I think, ok that’s weird and start to walk away but as I’m walking, out of the corner of my eye I see the little black yapper (not a pit bull) running up behind me. He jumped up and bit me on the back of my hand. I’m thinking “what the…” turn around and the guy is standing on his deck in an undershirt with the dog in his arms. I said, “hey, that dog bit me” to which he replies, “he doesn’t bite”. I said he bit me, I’m bleeding. He says “ I apologize, I didn’t mean for him to get out”, as he is turning to go back inside. At a loss for words, I said “does he have all his shots, the guy said yes and went inside. After golf I’m thinking the guy is a weirdo and not sure I believe him about the shots so I called neighborhood security (who have all the power of the sheriff) and told them I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it but could somebody go check to see if the dog actually has its shots? A while later the security guy is coming up my driveway (my dog was barking at him!) and reports that the dog has all his shots. Again, I said I don’t want to make a big deal out of it and the guy says oh it’s a big deal, “I have to report it to the South Carolina department of something something” and took a picture of the bite. An hour later the SC dept of something calls to say they will go to the guy’s house to quarantine the dog for 2 weeks and call me back in 2 weeks. So it turned into a bigger deal than need be. If the owner had said, “oh, I’m sorry let me get you a band aid” and showed me his shot tag, I would have gone on my way without a problem. As someone stated earlier, maybe the human owner should have been quarantined for two weeks.

Back in my single days a doberman pinscher adopted me. She just showed up on my porch and she was very friendly. She was a total lover and not mean at all, unless you were a cat or squirrel.

When my doorbell would ring, she was right there, and I could hook my finger inside her collar and she would stand on her rear legs wanting to greet whoever. Most people took a step back when they saw her.

She loved tennis balls, and the neighborhood boys would go up the nearby tennis courts and look in the bushes and find "lost" balls and bring them to her. Many times I had 5 or 6 boys in the back yard tossing a tennis ball around and her chasing after it, and loving every moment. She would have a favorite tennis ball for a week or so, and then one day it was time for it to die. She could destroy it in short order, and go get another from the box of them I had as her toy box.

I had zero worries she would bite anyone. I could easily take her food at any point, never an issue. She was really smart. I still miss her.

Yep. When I lived near Atlanta there was an ex-cop from NYC who had three big rottweilers, and the air that he had them to appear tough. He didn't do a great job of keeping them in and one of them went after my golden retriever once. My little guy was a pushover and ran so I had to get in this dog's face and get big to make him stand down. My parents talked to the owner who made motions that he'd keep the dog inside.

One of those dogs mauled a neighborhood kid a few years after I moved. Happened in the yard of a neighbor who ran out and saved the kid--thankfully most of the damage was limited to the kid's backpack. Dog had to be put down, but not sure what happened to the owner.

Long story short, **** that guy and any other owner who buys a dog to look tough.
