Self check out. Yay or nay?
What’s the verdict on self check out? There’s a learning curve on a few items, like fruits and vegetables, where you have to enter the code and weigh the bag. I suppose there are similar items that use the process.
I like it, because if the normal checkout lines are busy, I can get in and out quick. When I go to Lowe’s during the week, I don’t see any cashiers. Only one person at the self checkout registers. I’m also seeing them at gas station/convenience stores. I’ve read some articles where retailers are cutting back on them for various reasons, theft, verifying alcohol, sales, etc. So, yay or nay? Edited because my voice to text was off just a little bit… Last edited by A930Rocket; 11-13-2023 at 05:26 PM.. |

The only place I have encountered them was in large grocery stores where I have to pick up a couple of items the chain won't allow my local store to carry. I like the fact there is usually no line up and I am back in the parking lot inside 5 minutes.
When I worked for the dairy I spent way too much time in grocery stores. I am happy to get out ASAP. Best Les

My biggest pet peeve has always been how my goods are bagged.
I have a system. Not everyone does. Self checkout for the win!

We shop at Sam's for fruit. I use their app, and when we are done picking out our selections, I use the phone to scan the items, slide a bar on the app and bam, we are done. Go to the door and show the person there the QR code on my app, and walk out. Super easy.
At the grocery store we go to, we go on Sunday mornings. Minimum crowds, and almost never a check out person, so self checkout is about the only way. The biggest pain is the table for bagging the groceries is small. The machine keeps saying to put the items in the checkup area, and it is full. I have voted my wife or I employee of the month there on each visit.

The self-checkouts here are set-up so that as soon as the item is scanned, it can be placed in the cart. No needing to scan everything first.

The screen layout and process has gotten better, so now I like self-checkout for when I have a few items.
Some caution though. I’ve read up on how retail approaches this. These are among the most watched and videotaped areas of the stores. And if you forget something or make a mistake they’ll be on you. And it’s not just where you can say sorry and pay the difference. You might get taken away in cuffs. |

Hate it, especially when they close down all staffed aisles
Fortunately I only see it at walmart and a local convienence store chain The c-store chain has crap software and after repeatedly offering my contractor rates for QA/bug hunting they've stopped trying to make me use it. Recently Ive noticed they've given up and now leave it to those that want it but they always have a real register going When at wally I always buy at least one box of 22 ammo so I just make em check out my whole cart there in sporting goods. Cofffee, soda, the occasional t shirt socks or underwear, ammo and fishing stuff is all I buy there though |

I'm mostly for them, but don't use them all of the time.

No. I’d rather pay someone to scan than pay them welfare. Have more respect for them too.

I shop for dinner 4-5 days of the week after work at the local grocery store. And I only buy fresh things for the most part so never have more than 10 items. Tonight: cod, 2 lemons, Kate's butter, fresh dill, box of tofu, bottle of Cointreau (tonight was lemon garlic butter dill cod, tomorrow, orange ginger cream sauce cod with shiitakes).
Love the self checkout. What I don't like is some asshats with a carriage half full, easily 50 things, wheeling up and checking out. And I don't mean like German Usain Bolt style check-outs, I mean molasses could beat them on a pour-a-thon. Home Depot, absolutely. Super fast.

Hell the heck no. I hate them. I don't do much shopping so my wife deals with that. Having both isn't too bad but I hate having to do all the work because vegging out does me some good when my items get scan. I don't know how to do veg. or fruits and don't really care to. At the home centers, I have having to measure the length of a pipe at self checkouts.
First the bag boys are gone, then we have to pay for the bags, now we have to scan our items? WTF is this world coming to? Blus because there's a lot of truth to it. |

Hate it. I figure I've driven to their store, walked through picking what I need, place them on the conveyer belt and lastly pay for it. The very least they could do is bag it..............
