I told members of my family to stay away, they’ll have your DNA and can sell it to anybody, etc. Whoops, looks like I was right.

My wife ordered one of the DNA test kits. I told her no way am I letting my DNA be tested. I have built a 6 generation family tree. I know my roots, and I don't care who was a 7th or further back generation ancestor.

My in-laws did it. I was pist off at the time. This thread is just a reminder of their lapse in judgment.

^^^ Same here.

From NPR:

"Even before a possible sale goes through, Prince, the law professor, said she wonders how many people know what data 23andMe already shares and with whom. For example, the company has given over anonymized data to the pharmaceutical giant GSK for years to help it develop new drugs.

"Everybody's worried about what a new company can do with the data — and that is a concern — but frankly some of the things that people are worried about, 23andMe already can do or already does," Prince said."

So no chance going back 6 generations.... anyone cheated?

We have a family "paisan" that turned out to be a cousin.

Sis did her and mom, I wouldn't do it.

I've done it, doesn't bother me...what can anyone do with my DNA? I don't know, I don't worry about things like this. I have a friend who refuses to use a credit card online, pays cash for everything, won't put apps on his phone, etc., because he's afraid he's gonna get hacked I guess. I've had my cc # stolen a couple of times, had my debit card hacked once, and it all gets settled in the end. It's just life, ****e happens....I can't be constantly worried about highly improbably scenarios.

If you have some genetic trait to have a chronic health issue, insurance companies might and likely will raise your rates or just deny coverage. Paranoia? Maybe, but who knows what they will be able to do in another 20 years with that info.

I carry my cell phone with me everywhere. I truly can't care less if they track me back and forth to restaurants, grocery stores or the car parts stores. I use credit cards and debit cards. I have had both hacked, but it never cost me a penny, just the aggravation of getting a new card.

Oh, I'm sure you are right about that insurance angle, if I was in the insurance biz I'd definitely want access to this data. I just assume there is zero privacy these days, because there really isn't. I don't think most people comprehend the massive amount of data that companies have on you - they likely know your behaviors and patterns better than you yourself do.

yeah, I've seen that....the data is likely junk.

This is just one example of the surveillance state in which we live. License plate readers are pervasive in law enforcement and our highways. And we pay for it all.

My mom got me that test kit as a birthday present one year. I never used it. One day she asked "did you ever get the test?" and I had to politely tell her "no way in hell."

She was upset I didn't do it. This is one of those examples where my deep state paranoia paid off

Cousin of mine sent in DNA from his bulldog. Got back a report that did not indicate anything unusual. Unfortunately he could not get a refund from them.

No worse than the state taking the DNA of your new born and entering it into a secret LE database.

Yeah that’s a thing

I wonder how many the police have falsely arrested due to DNA familial matches from these places
