Kinda depends how much you actually drive and need a car. For work, travel ect.. If you are retired and dont drive too far or often its easier to live with less comfort and reliability even though you want more comfort and reliability. And driving a modern car for fun there is no adventure in it. I dont like modern cars also dont really go anywhere so one modern car is enough. My 82 sc is borderline modern and if driven too often is not really fun anymore. Also too reliable so noth much tinkering. The rest of my 7 cars are pre 1972 and they are fun and practical for local runs and always stuff to improve upon. So I would sell the 993 and bmw and get an older project car something that you always liked but never bothered to own.

Sorry but a garden variety E46 sedan with over 250k is not an appreciating asset in any universe. The only E46 that has appreciated is the M3, and even they are not very expensive. Nothing against the E46 but they just a used car.

And will only get more unique and valuable when future generations recognize what has been lost... Power plant? It should stay original like the car as long as possible.

I'd sell the '84 911. The beemer is a good rainy day car and the 993 is still appreciating. No need for the '84 model really.

My only point is the only cars I regret selling were my 356s, classic, special. In your list above only the 993 falls near that category of "special" mostly by virtue of looks, last aircooled and a decent 3.6. I love me a G model, but they are not special enough to justify the current pricing. Still, the E46 is the one you must drop, I was not joking I spent $25K on my E46 M3 in 5 years, all crap quality component repairs and ungodly coding of modules with an old laptop. Don't be me. Any bimmer post E30 is a disposable strictly depreciating asset. If not depreciating, the repairs will getcha. The effing chassis cracks like a pretzel on E46s rear subframes, for pete's sake ! PS: Would anyone here on this board since forever, who paid $10-20K for an SC back in the day, ever consider buying one now for $60K? (just curious, maybe I'm the only cheapskate) Last edited by Deschodt; 09-12-2025 at 09:50 AM.. |

I echo what everyone else is saying about the lack of value in Porsches at today’s prices but I still love them if they were still cheap. A lot of the fun got sucked out of the hobby when prices went up. Remember early 2000s Pelican? Guys who were young, active duty military service members were buying 911SCs and working on them, modifying them, etc. Everyone was going to the track and burning up a set of tires on a regular basis and it was a real brotherhood around here. I miss it and my air-cooled 911s a lot.
![]() One small note I’d like to make; Descholt above said that “you can also hustle a Civic R…” My business partner has a 2025 Civic R, (as well as a GT3 and a lot of other vehicles), that Honda is seriously fast. It has a tune and exhaust and if you stab the pedal at 30-40 mph, it breaks traction and takes off like a scalded banshee. It would destroy a G-body 911 in any type of race. Also, it was around $55k out the door with dealer markup before the mods, so not sure about the context of the comparison. Anyhow….agree with you guys. If I was him, I’d get rid of the redundant car, one of the 911 Porsches. |

I can't recall anyone asking this question:" Which of the three do you drive when you have the time and inclination?"
Which car 'fits you' when you slip behind the wheel? Each of us here has our own opinion, but those are based upon our unique experiences and biases. This is about you and your personal connection (or lack thereof) with these automobiles.

I have to realize that the point will come some day that I sell the BMW (or one of the others). It will be just as difficult whether I sell now or ten years from now.

I struggle with this myself. But I don’t have a spare $60k so it’s all academic anyway. I would kill to have another SC, but at $60k? Not sure about that one. Yes I’m also a cheapskate and my first 911 was a 1970 911T that I bought for $4,500 and used as a daily driver.

Man, I get it — sometimes it feels like our cars demand endless attention. One repair leads to another, and before you know it, your weekend’s gone. But hey, at least there’s satisfaction when you finally get it running right again. On a side note, I’ve been going through pinterest reviews since I’ve been using it to save ideas for DIY car projects, and it’s been surprisingly helpful for organizing all those random fixes I want to try

Speaking of not wanting to have to repair a 356, here' a facebook post from Mike Wolfe of American Pickers fame
