other people putting garbage in my bins.
in the grand scheme of things, this a non-issue. its garbage. it gets taken away, end of story.
but the kindest family lives across the street from me. they just had a baby a year ago, and apparently, that little kid generates some garbage. i let them put a few bags into my trash. he did ask. he took that one "green light" and unilaterally applied towards a lifetime membership to my bins. no biggie until. i came home and saw my recycling bin was still full. wtf? there was a sticker on it. it was a sticker admonishing me that the contents of my bin was not illegible for recycle. i look inside and the neighbor dumped all of his Amazon delivery boxes, complete with Styrofoam. i was dinged $35 to have the truck come back. my wife called them and texted them a pick of the packages with the neighbors address on the box. haah. they came back and picked up the stuff after i filled my garbage bin with styrofoam. i'll nut up and talk to the guy. i'll maintain neighborly love. the old lady neighbor saw me moving trash over and told me to use the nuclear option. hahaha.. (she should see the stuff i put in her bins!!)

Slightly related: I have 3 elderly neighbors. I put their bins out every week and I bring them back in after being picked up. In return, I top off their cans on a fairly regular basis but I always follow the correct segregation rules.

We have an agreement with our neighbors that are empty nesters and rarely fill the can. If their can is by the curb, fair game for us to add to it. We still have four at home so we go through the trash, especially during lawn mowing season.

I wouldn't care until it started making my trash cans nasty or costing me money.
People are so lazy when it comes to recycle. I wish I knew what was ACTUALLY being recycled. It's my understanding that a lot of stuff that's picked up from green bins just gets dumped in landfills because it's not cost effective to recycle it.

I let my neighbors use mine quite often. HOWEVER, they know that they should ask first. It saves all kinds of grief and helps as needed.

I would be seriously annoyed by that, unless he did not know that it would be rejected.
I pay for the trash/Recycling/Yard waste and my town has taken away all choices of who you use, no more free market, so they company the "city" chose just raised the rates a bunch. Nothing I can do about it..... Freaking Colorado, I can't wait to get out. |

Living in a rural area....we have just one bin. Everything goes in it except for yard waste.
No recycle bin. I once dumped a few fall leaves in it and promptly got a letter saying I would be terminated if it happened again.

We have two trash bins, and one recycle bin. 95% of the time, just one trash bin to the curb, and the recycle bin every other week.
We also have "large trash" day one day every other month. We can put out dead water heaters, any appliance, and fence panels, large tree limbs, mattresses and so on. Nothing hazardous. This weekend I plan on putting out my old 2 cycle string trimmer, a leaf blower, and an 12 year old computer with no hard drives. I will put them out two days before the city comes by. The local scavengers will roll through the neighborhoods in old pickups and grab them. They use them for parts, or resell and they don't go to the land fill.

An interesting thing is the cans nowadays are owned by the collectors, city mostly, but the large bins at apts and commercial are owned by the contracted collector. So, if city property is sitting on the city street or alley, is it fair game? One side of the story is that the house that the bin serves may not be done filling it even if they have taken it out, say the night before. And they do pay for the service.
I, OTOH, will place trash and debris anywhere I can if I can see or hear the truck coming and it's not first thing in the morning. I've been hassled a couple times but even though the trash in the can is technically theirs until picked up, is anyone gonna give me a citation? I live where there is an alley so the alley is the designated place to put the can for pick up. Code says don't put it out there until the night before at the earliest. I don't know of anyone in 3 blocks that brings their bins inside the yard that has an alley. There must be a scant few, but if you look up and down the alley, all you see is bins. Therefore, at some point from very early morning, or the evening before, trash pickers are all over the place. No police action there. So I take it as unenforceable and do as I damn please. But wait, there's more: now we have been issued a 3rd bin for "compostables." This includes scrap food. Given the amount of flies around many existing trash bins due to food, I see this new idea as actually unhealthy. I'm pretty sure this ain't Cliff's city and no one is gonna be on maggot patrol. The trash bill with the organic bin is now $110/mo. At $1320 per year I'll put trash wherever I feel like it. For that kind of money they should be coming into the kitchen and emptying my trash can(s); recycle and normal trash. Personally, I toss an ounce of pool chorine on top of my trash if there is a pizza box that is not recyclable because it has a stain on the cardboard. If someone wants to dig around in there, go ahead. They constantly rip open black trash bags that are tied so there aren't flies in case some food is in there. Plastic bags are not allowed in the compost bin to wrap food. Neither is foil. I see a complete sihtshow in the alley here on out. I've sprayed bins swarming with flies many times out in the alley from neighbors with yard insect spray. I think I'll add some aromatics to my spray. Lysol might be part of a cocktail. Lime powder would be good too and won't hurt the compost. I wonder what their plans for all the garbage is. We don't have enough open land for the tons that they are expected to collect. |

Zeke, most of the "stuff" in our trash bins is yard debris from my wife's many flower gardens. We average one kitchen trash bag of household trash and food scraps.
We have a compost barrel that I put my grass clippings in, and we have a second compost pile with leaves and some grass clipping on the ground. We never have stinky trash or flies buzzing around the bins. Our trash pickup is part of my city water-trash-sewage & storm water drainage fee. Any hazardous materials like motor oil, antifreeze, old batteries, paint, household chemicals, florescent light bulbs or mercury vapor lights I take to the hazardous waste disposal site for "free" or just part of the water bill.

We have compose too down here. Food waste are to be separated and not to be thrown into the "trash" bin (WTF does that even mean if food waste isn't trash?). Price is going up again I heard some time ago yet those garbage truck driver are real azzholds. Yell at folks on what to put in their trash and refuse to pick up and drive off if we put cardboard in the "regular" trash bins. Because of that, I refuse to recycle or even make the effort to separate food waste. If I feel like, I jsut might dump amazon boxes into the recycling bin, if not it all goes into the Trash bin. We best not over fill and keep lids closed or else the garbage Nazi ain't gonna to stop and keep on trucking. Thankfully, our new garbage truck driver is much better then the previous few.
I think once out in the street, its fair game as to who throw what in the cans. It belongs to the city. I like the old days where the two guys standing in the back of the truck, pick up your trash and dumped it into the compressed ares to be thrown out. They didn't care much unless it was over 150 lbs of concrete blocks. Bulk items, tree branches tied up and was gone. We are going backwards here. |

True story here...
I was working a summer for my city's public services department between my college years. The 4th of July holiday led to needing extra help on the garbage disposal trucks. I was there and was helping out. We stopped at the local dvm building and the regular guy said he needed help with a garbage can. I grabbed the other side of the can and we hoisted it into the compactor on the back of the truck. He said "We got a big one here" I'll never forget it as a full size German Shepherd rolled out. The compactor came around and left a trail of blood as we went on to the next stop. .

We are not allowed to put yard waste in either our garbage or recycling. We have to take it to the yard behind the town hall, where they then take it to compost somewhere.
We get garbage picked up every week, and recycling every other. Since there's just two of us here, we rarely fill either can. That is unless the wife is on a eBay / Etsy / wherever buying spree, then there's a lot of packing to go. We don't have an alley, the cans go to the curb. The truck goes down my side of the street, and about 5 minutes later comes back to do the other side. I couple of times I've had more trash than fits in the can, and I'll just wait for him to empty it once, drive away, and I'll quickly fill it again and put it next to the neighbor's can on the other side of the street and he empties it again. The cans are all bar coded and maybe rfid chipped, but apparently they don't use that here. Dead animals in the garbage? That's nasty. I just buried another bunny in the back yard. The hound doesn't know she's a fox hound, not a rabbit hound. |
