Roadtrip To SLO - Pt 1

My brother had been bugging me to come up for a visit, just because but also because he’d picked up a new toy for the stable…

Leaving LA

About a nano-second after entering the freeway
I felt like a minnow in a great big ocean…

Blurry, but the only air-cooled car I saw

Top-down, six cylinders flying, chilly outside, just a 52 year old engine fan but getting plenty of heat, I had to light a stogey.

A harbinger of things to come…?

First sight of the Pacific south of Ventura

First stop along the 154 at a “Vista Point” showcasing the beautiful Santa Inez River Valley below.

SLO Trip - Pt 2

Gratuitous shot at the vista point

So satisfying to see Cachuma nearly full. The most water I’ve ever seen behind the dam.

Fall on the Cemtral Coast

I hate you, I really do.

Targa, Central Coast, I have a brother, blah, blah...

From cold and rainy Maryland:

I love the pictures...

SLO Pt 3:

A 2002 BMW. Z8 w/ 24K on the clock. And very well maintained!

We’re both Porsche guys, but I’m hard pressed to come up with any car more beautiful than this one. Designed by Mr Fisker, he just seemed to get every detail right.
Am I wrong?

I’m especially fond of this angle:

So many great details. This vent includes LED side marker lights

SLO Pt 4

Sorry Paul - I know these are your old (warm) hunting grounds…

I made a fun, spirited drive to Morro Bay. The 400 hp V8 pulls like a locomotive, and it’s fairly svelte with the all aluminum body. And yes, a 6 speed manual!

Dinner at Dockside with lots of local color and a stunning sunset.

As if on call from central casting, a mama sea otter swam by carrying her baby.

Finished the evening with a short drive up to Cayucos to see our sister

SLO Pt 5

Those who live on other coasts next to other oceans may find this surprising, but along her 840 miles there is only one small stretch of sand you where it’s still legal to drive on California's sandy coast. (Ps. they’re always making noise/threatening to close it, so if you ever want to do it, don’t wait – I don’t.)

When’s the last time an early 911 drove on the Pacific sand? I'll say it did turn a few heads...

And what.a.blast it was! That six cylinder over the rear wheels gies excellent traction, but I stayed on the hard-pack just to be sure.

The last time I drove my car on Pismo - 16 years ago, with my then 11 year old son!

SLO - Finis!

Headed for home, another cigar for the road, Santa Cruz Island and home!

5527 trouble-free miles, 27.4 gal of high-test gas, and around 18 mpg. Seems a little low to me (Skip?). Most of the driving was between 75-80 mph, with some spirited driving around SLO, but it seems to me in years past it was closer to 20-21. Anyone else know what mpg they’re MFI car normally averages?

The MV Palau Islander in the port of Colonia, Yap Island, Federated States of Micronesia. June, 1966. In our passage out of Guam on the Palau Islander we passed right over the Challenger Deep of the Marianas Trench.

Fantastic trip report David and great photos too!
SoCal has a lot of sunshine and great roads once you are off the 5.

I understand Seahawk, gets dark here before 4:30... sometimes the clouds part for a bit

Favorite cheap workout location included in a 5 mile loop right out my door-
240 steps through the trees named the Zimmerman Hill Climb.
Northern orientation to ensure slippery steps in winter- I usually go counterclockwise so this is downhill first, good warm up then decide if a climb and decent effort is OK with the left knee-

Time to head home, getting dark and scary soon!

Well said

Seriously though, they were the near-perfect blend of form & function.

^^^ and Scott let me fly it. Hands over the controls and then goes silent on me. Had to quickly recall ground school classes from 40 years ago. Or die

This was my favorite plane from the museum.
