the ulitimate "pet name" thread

many of you guys have little pet names for your cars and i was wondering how you came up with those? i have named cars in the past, my 1st car, a 66 plymouth fury was the "grey ghost", ive had "the mustard cup" (73 vw beetle), "the red sled" (86 toyota 4x), "the chilibean" (91 civic), "the bunny" (81 rabbit convertable), "the tan trolley" 89 chevy work truck, "the taco" (99 toyota tacoma) and "the cordeeeeeeahhh" (81 mitsu turbo). and oh yeah, "the marlena", my current 97 civic. why the marlena,, my good friends wife has the same exact silver 4 door civic...

i call my 911 simply "the red car" when speaking of it outloud, and thats just so i dont have to say "porsche" and sound all pretentious and upity. so, how did you arrive at the cute pet, or nickname for your 911, or otherwise?

oh and by the way, ive always wanted to have "an ultimate" thread, make my dreams come true by making this one such..

Interesting… I refer to MY Porsche as 'the blue car' or 'my old blue car'

However, I owned a '67VW Type 1 for over 18 years from the early '70's to the early '90's

Now THAT car was name after Curt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse 5" time and space traveler 'Billy Pilgrim' or 'Billy'

Seemed like I was do'n a lot of time and space travle back then...eek:

To this day I'll run into people that I haven't seen in years asking me "How's Billy?"

Cheers,

Mine's nina. Alternately from nina simone -- black, beautiful, great music, or as a nice jewish girl -- nina levin. the name came first on the second one, then I realized she's both high maintenance, and highly rewarding, so the analogy fits. no offense intended by either one.

I call my Wrangler "the Coyote" since it takes me across borders I never would see with any other car

I call my Grand Cherokee "The Wagon" since, well it really is just a lifted wagon.

I call the 911 secretly "her majesty" cheesy I know, but she does rule her castle.

Around the peasants I just refer to her as "THE" PORSCHE

My first car was an 84 Opel Kadett, named 'Little Blue' after a cartoon elephant on TV.

My current daily driver (88 t-bird) thus became Big Blue, and when my 86 911 was purchased it quickly became Little Red or just Red.

One of my coworkers had a Celica named Tom, after the moustached actor.

Toby, so it was Marlena I saw you in on 237 earlier this summer?

Drena

Why?

I just like that name.

My family and friends know what I'm talking about when I say, "I spent another $1k on Drena". or "I'm gonna take Drena for a walk."

I don't know why I have "Klein Panzer" in my signature... ...

Drena the little panzer?

Kick me in the head right now.

I never named a car. But sometimes refer to one or the other (generically) as the beast.

Let's see.....

The bubble (1958 Beetle)
Lucille (Loose seal, get it? 1948 Chev pick-up)
Turkey ( 3-year old trying to pronounce Cherokee)
Twinkie ( old beat up Jeep)
Red streak ( Chevy truck)
Super streak ( Chevy truck w/ 454)
lots of others....

Seems like the Porsches have had pretty lame names.

The black one
The white one
The silver one
etc.

Good thread Toby, I'll pitch in..

The RS clone is called "India", well just because its India Red.
My 3 year old daughter named the 356 "Olivia" after her favourite book character. Kinda fits the old girl...

My first car was a 1966 Toyota Landcruiser named Jason after the character who wouldn't stay dead in the friday the 13th movies (and also for the fear it instilled in pedestrians)

My second car was an '86 Golf named Vincent (vinny for short). Don't know why.

My second volkswagon I refer to as that piece of sh!#.

My wife's yellow volvo 240 wagon was the yellow sub and had the plate "ylowsub" to match.

Neither of my Porsches have had names. Though my wife has recently taken to calling the 911 "your damn car". I have been trying to find a name for it, but I haven't even decided it is male or female. Is there a test for automobile gender?

The late Harry Pellow wrote a great story about a 356 the owner called "Gretyl". I've always thought that was a great name for a Porsche and the Maestro's story illustrates how easy it is to become attached to a car and name it, particularly when it's a quirky Porsche.

Phoenix was named after an engine fire when the insurance company totaled the car. She literally did rise from the ashes. Let's just hope she doesn't take the name too seriously and have it become a recurring theme.

Here's Turbo - the ultimate pet name for a gear head - and the ultimate pet (for us anyway)

The cab's name is "Neva", actually "Neva II" - the first Porsche was "Neva I". The Alfa was "Rosa", The truck is "Monty". The Triumph(s) where "spits" and "red head". The Monte Carlo was "silver ghost" The Taurus was "bluebeard". Many more that I forget...

The Jeep Liberty is the Yuppiemobile (Wifey's) I named it
The Ford truck is "That thing" (mine) Wife named it
The Raptor is the "Beast" I named it
The Z400 is "Isn't it cute" Wife named it

Do you see a pattern here?

The Porsche is quite creatively titled,,,,,, The Porsche. I'm waiting for it to piss me off for the first time, then depending on the $$ amount to fix it, it will be named. I am very optimistic.

Most often in the spirit of low-key I refer to it as "the green car" but it has been "mean green" too.
My friends call it "turtle" b/c I also have a VW Rabbit... the color, shape, and the story fit well.
An unhappy girlfriend has referred to it as a "lawnmower" on occasion.
