Thay are pretty representative of most I have met.

I just got home from a week out-of-town. All the neighborhood Republican election (vote for ????) signs...including those on my lawn have been stolen. The only ones left are the two Kerry/ Edwards signs.

So much for fair play.

If you think mentioning somebody is gay in the context of answering a question about the rights of gay people -- or in this case, whether 'gay' is a "choice" then I guess you think the term itself is an insult.
Too bad they didn't hit the topic of obesity in america.

Did you know, that more than 60 percent of Americans aged 20 years and older are overweight. One-quarter of American adults are also obese, putting them at increased health risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and some forms of cancer.

And as we all can see, John Edwards wife struggles with this reality.. . .

Flindstone,

If it makes you feel any better, all the Democratic signs in my neighborhood are missing. Does it really matter, no. I don't think people look at signs and decide how to vote. I have noticed that there have been more signs this year than any year previously.

Island: Doesn't it say something that you don't hear about Edwards cheating. I mean, he could do better. How about that for character?

Flintstone, ALL of the signs in my hood are gone as people are using them for firewood since they are out of work and off the unemployment benefits.

Ah, so that also means the government no longer considers them unemployed. Great news for the economy.

Alan Keyes has used Mary Cheney for political gain without an ounce of complaint from the family or the GoOPers, and he went _FAR_ beyond mentioning her lesbianism:

Keyes: Cheney's gay daughter practicing ‘selfish hedonism’
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5897569/

Granted, Keyes is a certified psychopath and maybe the Cheneys were taking pity on him, but still....

Close, but no cigar (no Clinton jokes please) --> the thrust of what Kerry said was that it is NOT a choice. If it is not a choice, there shouldn't be a stigma attached to it.

Obesity (in the vast majority of the 60% mentioned above) is, and therefore it WOULD be a personal attack (rather than context).

(I'll probably get torched for that by someone, but I don't care).

Not so fast, Cam.

Being a Kiwi, I doubt you can fully appreciate how close this election is, and what those comments meant.

Heres a map;

Courtesy of The Onion Magazine.

So. . . the thrust of what Kerry said was;
"did I remember to remind the homophobic neocons that Dick Cheney has a GAY daughter? . . .. Dick has a lesbian, Dick has a lesbian . ..GAY GAY GAY. . neaner neaner neaner. "

You guys who think this was not the case; have some more Koolaid. Kerry could have just as easily pointed out to the audience, to his flaming buddy Congressman Barney Frank (4th district of Massachusetts). . . if it was not calculated. (and w/o stigma)

At least Edwards did this with some tact and some southern charm.

Isn't the whole point of this discussion that the problem is the mental contortions required by Republicans when gay marriage move from being a theoretical problem to one in their own family?

So yeah, of course its a dig at Bush - he chose the example which would cause the most impact - does that make it insensitive or a personal attack? Only if your starting point is that gay = bad.

(edit) forgot to say - love the onion graphic

Geez man, I don't know. this thread has been all over the place. .. .I've lost track.

So let me ask; does that make it insensitive or a personal attack, if the attack presumes that your starting point is that gay = bad?

Kerry (and the Onion) presume that conservatives come from a starting point is that gay = bad. (are there no gay conservatives? . .who hate guns AND themselves? )

This is certainly different than a starting point of gay marriage = unacceptable. (which I think was the original topic.)

I think I'm gonna cry UNCLE, but mostly because I agree with the first sentence.

Plus, I'm done in by the second . I know you know that I know that you think that I think... help me mummy.

I see your point - kinda chicken and egg, and I'm not sure how the liberal faux outrage at the conservative (faux?) outrage fits in either.
