85 MPH.

That's as high as my speedometer in the 82SC goes. .

I need to get a speedometer that goes up to 145 to see what she really does.

Just shy of 130. 40+ in a golf cart, Shepard AFB golf course. It's pretty fun passing people flying down a fairway, traveling parallel to the paved road.

Wow. I thought I was da man for getting my Cannondale up over the 45mph speed limit on a local steep hill. You win.

102 - downhill (Yes, it mattered)

Paced by my friend in his mustang, who happened to be laughing uncontollably. And then he applied another 30 mph to his... Sniff...

145 mph (on the speedo) in a friend's '57 Corvette in 1960. Took my '72 E up to 125 mph a couple of times. Got my '67 912 up to 100 mph once. Cruised at 95 mph from Santa Ana to Camp Pendleton in my wife's Camry once (so was everybody else).

Since we have touched upon the subject would anyone else like to share the details of their worst speeding ticket?

Mine was 107 in a 65 on a motorcycle.

The worst all happened in a 1 year period for me :-
120+ in a 65(bike) NJ Turnpike.. paced by unmarked
120+ in a 55 (bike) RT 9.. Stationary Radar
120+ in a 55 (bike) GS Parkway.. paced by sneeky Lo Pro marked car
mustn't forget "excessive acceleration on one wheel" on RT35(bike)
All of which netted me 2 points and about $600 in fines and confiscation of one PBA card and one STFA sticker... and who said Jersey Cops are the worst ??.

Believe it or not, I have never had a speeding ticket. I try not to missbehave for long stretches or on very well-travelled roads. I was with an old drag racing buddy one time in his Buick Grand National who wins the prize for most completely pissed off and flabbergasted cop. I can't remember all the details about his car, but it is the six cylinder turbo. Aftermarket turbo, block, heads, crank, etc, etc. Bottom line is he is the proud possesor of an official NHRA nine second time slip; keeps it in his wallet - 9.98 at 143 or so. Darn near cost him thousands in mandatory safety upgrades when the word got out through Division Six. Fortunatley, he never did it again at a sanctioned event. This car is still completely streetable and gets about 18 mpg on the freeway. Anyway, he decided to show it off one day with me in it. A hapless GSXR1100 was the victim. Two chuckleheads in a "family car" absolutely smoked this guy. He might have been impressed, but the cop wasn't. He saw the whole thing from behind, including this big black Buick getting almost a foot of air under the front wheels on the launch. We never knew he was there. He caught us at the next light as the biked turned off and left. We had a very long conversation in a nearby parking lot, culminating in one hell of a ticket for my buddy. The cop made sure we understood how close I was to walking home, how close he was to jail, and how close the car was to impound. It was ugly; I wouldn't recommend these kinds of encounters.

Geez, what kind of tires and suspension does he have that he can hook up like that?? Must be no fun around corners at all. I have heard that the GNXs (if it's an x) are fast to begin with, and when modded-really fast. To beat a GXR is quite a feat. My friend has a plaque on his commemorating a 190mph run at Bonneville.

PS-You know you're going to get a speeding ticket now that you've bragged on-line.

This thing just doesn't do corners. It has the classic drag racing front end set-up with the 90/10 valved shocks, skinny little (4" or so) Centerlines, and very soft springs. The rear end is fully tubbed with a narrowed GM axle; I can't remember if it's a 10 or 12 bolt. He runs some kind of street legal slicks on it that hook up better than the full race ones we ran in the '70's and '80's. It has some kind of multi-link adjustable rear suspension on it. Being out of the loop for years on the drag racing scene I'm not sure where he gets all of this stuff; he rattles off all the current hot manufacturers' names and kind of loses me. It's a pretty fun car for what it is. He has some incredibly small torque converter in it, say 9" or 10", that lets him bring it up to just over 5,000 rpm for the launch. If you have never had the chance to drive or ride in a car that comes out of the hole so hard it can actually wheelie, you are really missing something. Great fun in its own way. I use to think that was the be all and end all of motorsports. Until my first trip through turn one at SIR. As far as beating the GSXR, it's really not that big of a deal in a decent car. The bike manufacturers and the co-conspirators in the bike press still like their 1/4 mile times, and the bikes turn in some amazing times. With their riders. Most guys that buy one will never come within two seconds of the advertised time. This poor guy couldn't keep the front end down long enough to really go after it. I was looking over my shoulder out the back window; he has hopping up and down like some deranged little bunny.

The GNX is actually one of the fastest accelerating stock 6 cylinder production cars ever made and had a "ladder" link rear suspension added for '87 (?). Not a very pretty or refined car but damn fast and now somewhat rare and expensive for a decent one.
As far as beating a modern 750cc and up bike on the 1/4 mile being easy(ish), I disagree, only the riders lack of launching skills will let any stock or semi-stock car beat it. My year ZX9 (98) was the first bike to run a confirmed sub 10sec 1/4 out of the box bone stock except for front fork straps, with stock gearing and street tires no less, infact, I can probably do 0-100mph AND stop before most cars hit 100mph but that's a topic for a future thread.... :-)

The rider's lack of launching skills really is the determining factor, and his weight. Have you had your bike on a drag strip? If so, how did you do? Not picking on you or anything, but I have seen good riders who can't come anywhere close to advertised times. If you can get your "9 second" bike even below the 11 second range, you are doing quite well. Most street riders never hit the track and learn the techniques. The disparity seems much greater with bikes than with cars. Back when I was still heavy into drag racing, my honest 11 second bracket car ate "10 second" bikes for lunch. The guys just couldn't ride them well enough.

145 mph not bad for a 35 year old car. Shook a bit around 95. smoothed out after that . I was chasing a Viper...it was futile!

I prefer to do my flying on the ground.
Just over 130mph lap after lap at California Speedway, and getting passed on the straight and through Nascar 1 and 2 by cup cars and turbo creations that must of been closer to 150+
Flat out at 130mph through Nascar 1 and 2 on a 13 degree banked turn seems to take forever. Me on the low side.
