Crash on I-70 Photo help needed
Guys, I just got some amazing (not gory) photos of a freeway accident that happened on I-70 in Kansas on Feb. 14th. But for some reason, I can't get 'em to post here. Anybody with computer skills willing to help? I could forward the email to you, then you post them? Basic accident was a backhoe being hauled on a flatbed...somehow the hoe's arm extended, didn't clear the overpass, and nearly cut through the overpass. PM your email if you think you can do this, I'll pass on the email I got.

Ha, those are great shots. Stupidity in action, the excavator did a serious number on that bridge, and shut down a portion of I-70 for days, not to mention the bridge that crossed it.

The driver didn't notice the arm was up? What an idiot, they don't "somehow" automatically extend.

I guess this is not one of those "allegedly..." stories.

Whoa!! I would hate to see the bill from that little mistake.
I wonder if the arm was somewhat down and was clearing higher overpasses and was just high enough to get snagged up in this one and shot up through it.

I am quite frankly amazed at how much damage was done to "reinforced" concrete by the vehicle. Any construction engineers have any comments on the amount of damage? How fast could he have been moving to cut thru all that rebar and do that much damage? Jeez he nearly cut the bridge in half!

He was I-70, I'm sure he was going at least 70.

The Excavator had an extra long stick / boom for reach. While the excavator itself isn't that big, the boom probably should have been removed for transport. Or the lowbed trailer was too short to get it to lay down and still be on the trailer.
Heavy haul permits will map out a route (if they were required?) having the load exit the fwy before low bridges are encountered. The high point on the boom where it has the knuckle / joint snagged the bridge, that looks like older construction. That caused it to raise even further up into the bridge while also pushing down on the trailer all at the same time. Looks like the rookie / driver was moving along at a pretty good clip. I wouldn't be surprised if the the trailer broke away at the fifth wheel and he kept moving ? Let see, 60 MPH ? and 80,000 pounds ? stopping in say 10/15 feet and you didn't know it was coming. The ultimate Knucklehead wake up call. Probably just a Rookie. He will probable duck everytime he sees a bridge for the rest of his life. |

That is mind-boggling.
It kinda looks like the crane arm bounced from the initial (glancing) impact, then rebounded (or the entire vehicle rocked back) punching through the roadbed. But what continued ripping the concrete all the way to the end? Did the etire vehicle keep going that far, then bounce back? I'd love to see the accident analysis on ths one! Thanks for the shots, Paul!
