Those were purchased in Hong Kong ~27 yrs. ago by my ex-g/f for about $50 each set.
The USD was strong then.
She was an international business woman and a shop-oholic.
When she ran out of her own money, she'd shop with mine.

She asked me, "Do you want a Rolex watch?...I can get you one for 1/4 what you'd pay in US."
I had her buy me 4 different watches instead of the Rolex. Still have them 'n they're good.

I'm with Don. I don't do cheap sunglasses. My latest pair is Ray Ban Storm Square polycarbonate (I usually like glass, but after using light ones you get spoiled). They were around $120. I'm hard on my glasses, but I really need them...sunlight drives my eyes nuts. These have been tough and I haven't lost them yet. I usually get about a year out of a pair before they either get seriously scratched or lost/destroyed.

I'm a big fan of Maui Jim sunglasses too, but they're pricey...

I don't know if higher price necessarily means better quality but if you don't want to pay for the nicer glasses, don't buy them even once. Once you get used to good optics you may be addicted - the cheap ones give me a headach.
I few years ago I was able to get "out of style" Varnet's from Campmor for $20 a pair. Very good optical quality and it wasn't so bad if the Mrs borrowed and lost them (as is her habit).

I'd like to get some new sunglasses. My last set were a ~$33 set from REI, Pepper's polarized, IIRC. I want another set of polarized. I've been looking at REI.com (the outlet) and campmor.com. There's a bunch of stuff that seems like it could be decent in the $50-80 range. I think that if I get something better they may last longer. Also, something that comes with a case would help protect them since most of the damage is from me dropping them when I get out of the car.

The various sites say stuff like "sized to fit med to large faces". Well, crap, how do I know how big my face is. (would've never thought I'd ask that question).

I see some stuff from Bolle that seems decent, Native, Smiths, Serengeti. Any brands that are particularly bad or good.

I also like the idea of interchangeable lenses. That way I could have a couple sets of lenses and if one set gets scratched, I could replace them. Also, some of them have an AR coating on the back of the glasses. I do often get a reflection or glare from the back of the lenses on my current glasses, so that would be useful too. Anyone have any thoughts.

This will be by far the most I've ever paid for sunglasses (the $33 dollar pair was the most expensive I'd ever had) so I want to get decent stuff for the price.

Thoughts from the experts?

Steve I'm glad you resurrected this thread. I took Don up on his offer on the Oakley's and they have been great sunglasses. I wear them every day. Haven't seen Don on here lately, but he is a hell of a guy.

Hey, I'd still recommend those $25 Costco sun glasses. Three sets of polarized lenses, clear (polarized ?, haven't tried those yet), amber and gray w/ carrying case, lense cleaner, etc. Don't know if they still have them, but I've beat the ***** out of mine & they keep on going. One thing I like is that they have cheap hinges, which actually aren't hinges but a snap-on plastic affair. I break hinges on glasses all the time & with these, you just snap it back on.

I would second Serengeti's - I got a polarized pair off of eBay two years ago, and they have held up well.

got Porsche Design's , black frame, blue polarized lenses, no pic
good stuff, not to fragile, good uv protection, and great in full sun, but also in inbetween.. not to dark
payed like 80 us for em... well worth the money...

stupid D&K aviators i had before that were flimsy and not as good to the eyes and payed more for those...

I too, am a sun glass whore, and with my eyes, I don't slack on eye protection. One thing that an eye doctor PCA member gave me to try at a track even are the Nike Maxsight lenses. I love them for when I'm on the track in eith a car or bike. They give away free trial sets.

Interesting. I don't need corrective lenses, but I see that they make them for that. Still not sure that I want contacts if I don't need contacts. But I might give them a shot, hell, they are free.

I'm blind as a bat, but being able to see clearly without sun glasses on the track, not having to fiddle with getting them back in a full face, and an intercom, or on my BMX bike, not having them move when I land a big jump is a dream come true
And when I was young and racing BMX the Nat. level, Oakley was a sponsor, so I still have tons of them, from Eyeshades, Frogs, Blades, Razor Bades an up.





And even still have the very first pair of High End sunglasses I got in 1982, a set of Ray-Ban wayfarers

I buy my sunglasses and my reading glasses at the dollar store. Guess how much I pay? They're lying around everywhere, in a wide variety of styles. When they get scratched, I toss 'em.
