Ardbeg is very good. So is The Balvenie. But The Edradour is my current fave. Almost liqueur.

The Water of Life. I like single malts.

(Edit-there was a Balvenie there, but it was gracefully retired on the weekend....)

Balvenie 21-year. For everyday it is Balvenie Portwood, 12 year. They are the last Scottish converter still growing their own raw material and controlling the whole process. The quality shows.

My boss loves makers mark, I think it is second rate to Jack which is 12th rate to any Balvenie.

Oh, and REAL MEN WEAR KILTS!!!!!

Just had to weigh in on the situation here...

Question...

Is there any special bottle(s) of your favorite spirits that you keep for YOUR (or VERY special friends) consumption ONLY?

I keep the Oban, MacCallan's 25, Remy VSOP, Hennessey XO, Louis, Cordon Bleu etc. available but not in sight and reserved for me, or special occasions and special friends that know what they are drinking.

I learned this after being away on a business trip and the wife had her social club over for wine, tea etc. however she offered something stronger and I'll be damned if they didn't consume my best single Malts and best cognac's. I came home to Jack Daniels, Makers and other lesser spirits.

I know for my cigars I do that. If someone wants to enjoy a cigar but is a novice, I will not offer my OpusX, Monti's or Aston's but maybe a Padron.

Am I being an a$$ about this?

If I have fig newtons in the house I have to hide them from my wife, else they will vanish. I would do the same with booze and cigars if that were a similar problem.

When I'm drinking, not too often these days, I prefer Martel XO. There are several bottles waiting, patiently.

You may call by for a dram anytime, Mike. Sitting just outside of shot is a new bottle of Lagavulin, ready to be pressed into service on a moments notice. Wonderful things, the Islay malts, all peat and seaweed. I think Bowmore is a good and underated Islay, too. But Lagavulin is a real fave. Ah hell, they mostly all are. But Cardhu is crap, IMHO. Its the base of Johnny Walker, too.

I replentished my stock of The Balvenie; a 12 year old and a 21 year old; the latter has gone up in price since I last purchased, by a good bit too.

I bought one to try out, BruichLaddich Second Edition, a 20 year old Islay single malt. We see what surprises it has in store.

I have found a reasonable place on Long Island for malts. Lagavulin @ $63.00/ bottle. Chicago area is about $75.00.

Here's the link

www.popswine.com

Stuart, Johnny Red also uses Talisker in it's blend which gives it that peppery finish on the underside of the tongue.

God, I love the island scotches.
