What's everyone doing for the 4th?

We are heading to Myrtle Beach and then Charleston, SC to do it up. It is our 5th anniversary by the way. Have fun, be safe.

If everything goes according to plan I'll have the kayak somewhere out in the Pacific Ocean. Then return to Marina DelRey in time to catch the fireworks demo around 9:00pm.

Plan to fire up the smoker early in the morning and put on a nice pork shoulder. Then I have to go into the hospital for a few hours, by the time I get back it should be about time for the ribs to go on, 4-5 racks of pork baby backs or maybe spare ribs, depends on how things look at the meat market. After that if it isn't too hot I'll sit on my back deck, smell the smoke, drink a beer and listen to some Willie Nelson. Dinner is planned for around 5ish, menu is Carolina pulled pork sandwiches with cole slaw on top, ribs, potato salad, baked beans, etc. Around 7 we will head over to the base and walk around all the WWII era planes on display before the fireworks. Hopefully the kids make it to dark, otherwise we might have to come home before the fireworks...

That's about it.

I will celebrate my country's independence by blowing up a small portion of it. I have too many fireworks. both safe and sane and highly illegal.

I will be trying to comfort and console my 4 year old daughter and my 2 great danes, all of which are deeply petrified by the sound of fireworks.

It will be a long and trying day that I wish I could escape.

I will probably use Apple since it is pork, hickory and mesquite are stonger flavors and sometimes overpower the meat. I have never used cherry but I would think it would taste good too.

The sauce for the pulled pork is a classic Carolina sauce which is vinegar based and very thin.

For Texas barbecue I usually use a tomato based sauce, on the side.

dessert...hrm...that's a good question...cobbler is always good. Have to sic the wife on dessert.

I drew the short straw. I'll be on call from tonight at 5 PM till 7AM July 5th. Four straight days covering for myself and three other docs plus emergency room call. It's unlikely that I'll be home much at all in the next 4 days. A buddy is having a big barbecue on the 4th and he lives about 15 minutes from the hospital, so I'll try to sneak over there for a while if it slows down.

Rick (Nathans Dad) has a perfect 4th planned out. That's pretty similar to my 4th last year. Thanksgiving and Independence day are my favorite holidays. Christmas is great, but it's a LOT of work and I'm exhausted when it's over.

pick up the boy from the ex's house early and go surfing. Come back, get coffee from Peets, then maybe to the playground and I'll shoot some pictures. Then a quiet (ha) evening in the apt, and then after the boy goes to sleep try and work on this damn review paper that has been driving me nuts...

I'm gonna' go for a nice long purifying ride on the motorcycle to somewhere way the hell away from the city, crowds and people in general. I'm finding me a nice campsite, pitching a tent and a hammock and I'm gonna' do very little except lay in said hammock, get stupid-ass drunk, read/study for my next ARE exam (coming up) and enjoy a little solitude. Probably get a nice hike in too.

After a couple of days I'll probably head home, wrench on the P-car a little, maybe hit the beach or maybe not. Haven't decided. The illegal fireworks are slated for the evening of the 4th. Picking up a few more rockets tonight. I already have TONS of firecracker bricks, bottle rockets, etc. Need more big "showy" flowery stuff.

I hate crowds with a passion. I refuse to go anywhere involving throngs of idiots I need to trip over to do anything/get anywhere this weekend.

Moving into our new house, and having a BBQ in the back yard.

It's only going to be 106 in the Central Valley - should be a piece of cake.

X2 The only rub this year is the police. They just got the new digital police radios and my scanner won't pick them up anymore.

I'm going to be on call, so I will spend most of my evening on my computer. Hopefully it'll be slow, but no reason to assume that.

Heading to the reservation for the good (illegal) stuff this Saturday. The 4th will be our 4th annual 4th of July Block Party.

Let us know how you do with all the illegals. Lord knows we couldn't figure out what to do.

That's too easy, under the current regime we house them, feed them, give them thousands in state benefits and then wonder why we have problems.....
