Too cool! Thanks for sharing pics of Rick Van Beveren's Bug. That car was a blast to drive. Porsche 911 seats, RS lightweight style interior, the aubergine paint color- lots of fun. I totally forgot that Hall got the car.
By this time, I had my first (still do) Porsche 911 and Rick followed suit with the aquisition of a certain black 914-6 (hmm... where do you think that ended up?)
We taught ourselves about Porsches back then by putting them together, much like lots of Pelicanites do here.

Our friendship was the primary foundation of building TRE . Lots of great memories there

So in a way , Mulholland racing is responsible for TRE !

47Hammer, keep scanning and posting. This is a really fast trip down memory lane. Everyone back then wore Wallabee's- life was good.

Busted? I never got hauled off. But...I did get a radar ticket at 90 mph by the man himself Sgt Harrison. That was the worst one, I had to go to court with my Mom because I was 17 at the time and well try explaining that to Mom. Another time I got stopped by Sgt Harrison for tooo many driving lights on the vehicle (fix it ticket)- I had to pull a wire and non op them to leave). Conveniently I pulled into Grandstands where I had quite the audience. He then proceeded to perform random vehicle inspections on about a dozen other cars. One year later I got stopped by Harrison again (no ticket), I had a tailite cut out switch and "forgot" to turn it on. After some explaining and make believe fumbling under the dash I had lights again. About a year after that I got pulled over by (guess who) again. This time I had a bunch of bows and arrows in the back seat as I used to shoot archery at Valley College. Not a good thing. Most memorable was when my friend Leo and I were hauling in the rain over by Chris B's street we cut down Dixie Cyn and were going down to Valley Vista. We got into the dirt part of Dixie and it was pouring rain. We come up on a black sedan that is stuck in the mud. As my headlamps uliminate the sedan it now has a white roof and a christmas tree. We can see they are stuck so I start backing up to get the hell out of there. Everyone remembers how narrow Dixie was?. I back up about 50 yards and oh no here comes another LAPD cruiser behind us. No where to go. I always thought it funny when they ask "what are you gentlemen doing up here"? We got hassled while being made to stand in the rain and then we went on our way. We run over to Papa Johns Hamburgers to eat on Hazletine and Victory and about five minutes later the same cops show up. Were a few more.........then there are the ones when I didnt stop.

Does anyone recall the Helicoptor incident off of Java? It happened a few times over the years that I know of. Coy Drive, Woodcliff, Bowmont, Skyline, Allenwood. You knew trouble was coming if you got night sunned by that bird with the headlamps.

This thread is classic and has to rate in the top 10 all time for the PP BBS (maybe even the best). Thanks to Dave, Jeff, Henry, and all the others that were there and are sharing their memories and photos. This has to be documented in some form or fashion. I agree that a documentary is the way to go. There has to be someone among the CA Pelicans who has connections to get that started, right? It is SoCal - in the heart of movieland!

It is also the land of the birth of hotrodding and lots of good old American racing ingenuity. If you do any research on vintage racing cars and drivers, it seems that most roads lead to SoCal in some way directly or indirectly. This is great history and the stories are priceless - please, please, please, someone document this for future generations!

I also have lots of memories of being terrified in the back seat of Rick's Bug. Those pictures are great! I loved that Bug for many years, until the black 6 came along. I was fortunate to ride in some great cars in those days including a number of 510's, my brothers' various VW Bugs - 510s - etc, Ricks Bug, Jeff's Brown Capri (with the Police scanner), Curt C's blue Rabbit (fred), Curt O's Mustang, Rick's 914-6 was the biggest E-ticket back then (today as well with DB at the helm). Any old pictures of those cars would be fun to see. Hopefully I have jarred some more memories.

My friend that manages the Fox & Hounds pub (Venture & Vineland, Studio City) was asking me about getting a bunch of Pelicans to start or end a run from there. He also has the idea of doing something on a regular basis, but let's start smaller.

These names from the past bring back the memories like it was yesterday (last night). I dated a girl that lived on the corner on Mulholland and the first street east of Skyline Dr(Laurel something) and one night we were sitting on the cement bench that is still there making out when we heard this loud motor racing thru the canyon and when the Blue Corvette with black side pipes and huge tires sticking out from under the fenders with a Mazda in tow about twenty car lengths behind, I thought, damn, I know that guy in the Vette, he's worked on my straight liner before,(Big Block Nova) Wow! he was going fast.

I was hooked and done with drag racing that instant. Charlie worked on a few of my cars back in the (small block Camaro's) and always made them run well.

Here are a couple of celebrity sightings on Mulholland experiences:

Glenn Campbell (Wichita Lineman, Galveston, etc etc) lived in the Laurelwood area. We would see his semi custom blue Continental Mk 3 (or 4? they look very similar) cruise thru from Hollywood to Beverly Hills on occasion. Well, he must have been REALLY pissed at all the racing activity going on. One night he came thru going west, and a bunch of us were there zipping around. A few hours later, he was driving back east. There was this guy jamming back and forth with a white Spitfire. He ran up on Campbell just before Carl's turn and proceeded to pass going into this blind right hander. Mind you with how dark it gets up there , this is not as dangerous as it might seem.
Campbell's window rolls down and a can of pepper spray douses the poor Spitfire driver as he was going past !
We were sitting on Bowmont and hear brakes lock up, cussing, yelling- but fortunately no accident.

Chuck Connors (Rifleman) lived a few doors east of Chris B's RSR lair on Mulholland. After a repast of pizza and sodas, I (with a few friends on board) was making a pass from Beverly Glen towards Coldwater. It was fairly late so there was no traffic. As I rounded the uphill on the Esses, there was The Rifleman standing in the middle of the road with a flashlite. I had to stop as he held open his jacket displaying a neat holster with a pistol : Egads !!! Was I about to be involved in a wild west shootout with my Tempest and the Rifleman ?!!! He comes to my slightly opened window and his 100 octane breath could have knocked over a building. Lots of expletives came forth amongst the alcohol droplets admonishing us in no uncertain terms that this was not a race track, cut this X#%& out , and never want to see you up here again. Jeez ! what was i doing? pissing off the Rifleman ? This was one of my saturday afternoon tv heroes! Still the daring me to a fight deal , the alcohol, and standing in the middle of the road did get me riled up. So off to the Van Nuys LAPD to file a report. Some detective dutifully wrote it all down, and amongst the staff we could over hear- "Hey Fred, Chuck Connors is at it again"

Never heard what happened, if anything.

My other 124 4 door TC. Yes thats me. 15 &1/2 years old and didnt even have a license yet....I had a car and thats all that mattered with the prerequisite wink mirror and roll cage.


The Austin Healey and the Bugeye Sprite belonged to Dave Fine. He was up on the hill throughout the 60's. Not very high tech but they were fun. Dave also had a Berkeley car (miniature Cobra look)

I am 90% sure this is Rob Sandersons 510, only one I remember with Mini-lites in the day and frenched door handles. Always had a jacked up front air-dam. He made it into Carcraft Magazine around 78-79 with it.

Dave,your scaring me! I sold both that car and the Z28 to go to Jim Russell,smartest move I ever made. You know both those cars met with quick death right after that,such a bummer especially the T/A,it was a VN build black interior no center console 4spd sold right down the street at Prestige Pontiac-that car is worth 12-15 times what I paid for it and at the rate SD's are going will probably fetch six figures someday,who knew?

At that point the mull had served it's purpose as a gateway drug to the next level,lol.The decision was also confirmed one day shortly before that while riding down Beverly Glen with John H. in his 69Z28 and seeing 120 on the speedo right before we hit a line of traffic waiting for the light at Sunset.If there had been anyone coming north bound I would not be here writing this thirty years after.

Thats the guy! Who is the guy standing to the left of John?
Thats the same guy who rode around as a passenger in
the aqua Fiat.

I always ran into him up on the hill. He was like 8 feet tall (so it seemed) Every time I would see him we would say "hey dude". He was always riding in someones car.

But hey we are having a blast in the process. We all appreciate it and are intrigued by this thread. That same magic is here that existed long ago up there. Only difference is we are older and wiser.
