I would like to take a moment to thank the folks at Pelican for letting us use this board and sharing about Mulholland.

Bob Hall is the twin brother of Jim Hall. Both are in the auto industry. Bob (as henry mentioned earlier) brainchild-ed the miata based on the Lotus Elan (first one- not the fwd isuzu based M100 Elan)
Bob loved all things Japanese- He went there a bunch of times, taught himself the language from comic books (serious!). For a short time he dated Belinda Carlyle (pop singer of some girl band he met on an airplane )
His BMW Z1 sported the weird camoflauged vinyl interior. We see or hear from him from time to time.
Jim writes column articles for the motor trade- we see his byline here and there

Unless Rick is their father , I don't remember anything about camera cars.
His dad had swedish cars: A blue Saab Sonnett 3 and a white Volvo 122 that got the 123 GT package

I dont know Bob Hall personally but know his name. His famous license plate on his Miata is "IKIGAI". Japanese translation-obsession

Yeah now I think Rick is not related either.

Bob Hall had some friends in the Chrysler motor pool.... We pick up the faux LAPD cruiser in Burbank and we head out to the rock store where we meet the film crew. We had a fun afternoon with me "chasing" the bad guys, doing handbrake turns into turn outs, squealing tires, and the like.

Dave,

Do you remember what happened later that night? Bob brought the fake cop up to Mulholland and chased me back and forth with the lights lit-up while I was driving my father's Volkswagen...It was hilarious, the spectators thought it was real.

Then there was the time Bob borrowed a limo and dressed up as Elton John...he stopped traffic during cruise night on Van Nuys Blvd.

I forgot about that- but you reminded me about what Bob told us some time later: A lot of the Ray Ban wearing cop in the car chase scenes were not usable due to the driver (me) smiling so much !

OOPS !

You know the Corvairs didnt seem to last on the hill. Never really saw a lot except for a few Corvair Spyders and Monza's thru the years. Considering they were GM cars and the Turbo Monza came out I think in 1962 were fairly advanced for the day (flat 6). In racing they held up against 356's. Went to school with a guy who had both and he said they both had handling ills. I later made my life career in collision repair and restoration and every Corvair I ever saw was a total loss. I guess Ralph Nader really won the fight to kill the Corvair afterall. Still see a few around the valley from time to time and some are actually in good condition except they smoke a bit.

Anyone remember the Yenko Stinger? Gotta love that advertisement..."be a Swinger in a Stinger" Not!

One of my most memorable track moments was at the Mosport Firehawk 3hr in 98.We were driving the house 240SX's in touring,John Norris and Craig Stanton were in the sister car and I was double dipping in a GS Firebird and the second 240.Well my co driver hurt his back the day prior and couldn't make the start,so I went over to John Morton who was up there driving a Cup car in the six hour.We have been freinds for years and I conned him in to starting our car.I don't think he had driven anything Nissan since the GTP days, and he did his usually sterling job and handed it over fresh as a daisy. If anyone is shaking down a seven figure historic resto race car it's John's phone that usually rings first-one of the most humble and classiest guys in the sport!

If you have an older bro named Tony he could elaborate, the tales were not embellished either.John was one of my best buds and we grew up on the mul..well off it,with me on Benedict Cyn and he Beverly Glen park.I met him when he had his RX-2?, that was the summer of 76,he was I think nineteen and I was seventeen. He went through cars like Sherman through Atlanta,I would guess probably he had owned a dozen by then, all were flung with (semi) wreckless abandon up there. That L was sold to him by Dave B.(not of the toad variety, although they new each other in a business capacity)we did Mammoth in 3 1/2 hours flat in that thing pouring rain on Caldwells.. Any way after John T-boned Dave Rottenbergs 510 in Carls in his 68 SS camaro that L became his fresh horse.Everybody went fast up there, some people went faster.John had a unique blend of raw talent and little fear.He could well have had an outstanding motorsports career had life not gotten in the way.

Who owned that aqua Fiat 124 Coupe? I remember that car. Was that one of Johns rides? or did Chuck T or Phil M own it? I ran mine against it a few times. There was a guy who was really tall that was always a passenger everytime I saw it. At least my mind is ok 25 years later I still remember the names.

Henry (HPV) is going to chime in about now.

47Hammer thanks for the post. We love this kind of stuff!

"They told me you cant put a V8 in a Fiat" I said its all I've got!

Yes it does. The daytime photos are great since most never really saw these cars exept in the moonlight or a fast blur of headlamps. I know there are some more out there that are
rathole-ing history. We just need to pry those moments loose and get them posted.

The 124 belonged to Dave Ganiey, fellow member of ACR. Here's John and Dave @ the Car wash on White Oak in the mid '70's. I have a bunch more pictures that were taken around the same time up there. I just need to scan them, who on this board got busted on the mul back in '77?

Nader was probably MORE responsible for the Corvair than most people realize. But thats for another thread. I can't imagine why there weren't more Corvairs on the hill other than just a bad rep.
Either way I'm addicted to these little tanks.

Not very pretty just yet but it's comming along.
Currently running the 180hp turbo motor for my '66. While the real 140hp is being rebuilt

I too am loving this thread.

The stories are fantastic and so are the pictures of the vintage cars! Sadly, I am too young to have been a part of this experience but the stories sure bring it home. Despite the number of times I have been on Mulholland, I still don't know the places or the turns.

Hmmm, sure would be cool to have a "guided" Mulholland run with some stops at key places. Kind of like a spirited sightseeing tour.

That would be great wouldn't it? Maybe instead of an early morning run as is the norm, we could meet late one evening and really re-live the experience.
Any volunteers for tour guide?
