Sure you didn't just have a defective thermostat? The thermostat shouldn't open until the oil temperature gets over at the very least 180 degrees.

Chris, does the car even HAVE a thermostat for the external cooler? Should be located in the right rear wheel-well.

If it did, it doesn't anymore. The oil lines run on the floor on the right side. They come through the firewall in the back, never even going near where the thermostat would be.

Aha, that's why she never got up to temp. It would be a good idea to install a thermostat and a proper front cooler. Depending on the front bumper, we could install one of our TRE RSR replica front nose pieces.

![]() The reason why the thermostat isn't in the back right-rear is because it was relocated along with the alloy 16 quart oil tank to the front. This was done to bring the weight distribution forward since a 911 is "rear heavy". The Thermostat housing is from one year only, a 1972 911 with aux cooler option. (Oil tank in front of rear wheel) ![]() The custom fabricated oil tank was hand made by John Mason himself. It is wedge shaped at the bottom (never grabs air) to prevent oil pressure drops in hard turns. It is heavily baffled to prevent foaming of the oil. It fits beautifully in the gas heater compartment and extends all the way to the chassis underside. ![]() These are the locations where I ran the lines to and from the aux cooler long ago. I mostly drove at night, that's probably the reason that it never got hot. ![]() Last edited by Banning; 07-10-2008 at 05:22 PM.. |

I'm dying to get out but a recent illness has me laid up. Between the ailment and the meds I don't think you'd want me on Mull in a pick up truck.
Have fun y'all and maybe post some pics for those of us who couldn't make it.

How in the world does the oil filter work with only one hose going to it?

After passing thru the cooler, it is returned to the oil tank via the blue fitting on the top of the oil tank. ![]() It's very convenient to have the oil filter right where it is. Easy to change, and no longer protrudes into the engine compartment. ![]() Last edited by Banning; 07-10-2008 at 05:58 PM.. |

chris, is that a giant VW filler cap i see? what's the story behind that?
also, can you provide more information about the air/oil separator? who made it? how's it constructed? are they still available?

From the frontal pic, I could not see the other hose. It looked like only one hose going into the thermostat. Your other angles cleared that up. Thanks.

Along with cut-off drip rails, a lowered roof line, and a flush rear window, all to make the car more aerodynamic, I wanted no gas door. Arnie flushed it with the body at my request before painting. The reason that the gas tank has this unusual aluminum cap that only comes from certain old VW Transporters is that I wanted to be able to put my hand into the gas tank to be able to grab a cup or two. You see, before I installed the cold start mechanism the motor was sometimes difficult to start without a little fuel being poured down the injection stacks. That's the reason I had Arnie install that weird gas cap, hey at least it's from the same family and it's fun to put your hand into the tank. ![]() The air/oil separator that you are asking about is my own design. After much fudging about, I found this small alloy tank that I installed a breather to. All from Earl's Supply, lol. Every so often, I remove the drain plug from this small tank, and fuel comes out that has seeped into the oil supply during engine running. I could probably recycle the fuel back into the motor like a "Still Suit" from DUNE. Good questions nize. Last edited by Banning; 07-10-2008 at 06:31 PM.. |

Then we watched some of the best racing scenes from King of the Mountain on laptop. Cool! We got some funny looks from other cars that were driving by. ![]() The crickets were out and chirping loudly. It was a fair evening with just a hint of a breeze. Kevin It was mentioned tonight that "the whiskey lullaby" was out of tune. We missed you and hope for a swift recovery. All kidding aside ...seriously it just isn't right without you.

I picked up on that the first time Chris popped the hood. Love it. Now he just needs the drilled/ lightened ignition key like the 917's to go with the cap.
