Way cooooooooool on the Cichlids......I had a 200 gallon tank with Salvini's, Convicts,and Oscars. Everything was great until the 1994 Northridge quake when they became carpet ornaments. I miss them. One big happy family trying to stay out of the Fluval.

Yup.. you have all the manuals. (really) Trust me he does and the factory business card from Helga the Porsche Librarian/ Historian. I spent some time at the Banning homestead reading these manuals. All sorts of factory racing information. I am working on my German language skills. He even has the 914/GT stuff. Priceless!
For the steering wheel call Pedro at N. Hollywood Auto Upholstery. As far as Earls Supply.....you have no idea how much I spent there in the 80's.

Steering wheels are a DIY, save the money for something else.

Still wishing I had a camera ready for that pass. Won't miss the opportunity this time around. Anyone have a lipstick cam we can stick on the dashboard to catch the action in the cockpit? It might just be as entertaining as the view out the windshield.

OK, more done on the 911 today. After not feeling like bleeding brakes and getting dirty and subsequently sitting around, we figured it was about time to get the brakes bled. You never know what you will find around Chris's house and while looking for a few small things, wham, box after box of Porsche parts. A lot used and a few NOS items, but everything in good shape. There are even 6 Qts. of NOS Kendall 40 wt.

How about this NOS rear reflector? Even comes with OEM box and protective foam.

Or how about these factory NOS heat exchangers?

Rocker panels anyone?

Brakes are bled and good to go. The process took awhile and took for ever to get the pedal hard, but two stuck bleeder valves (one destroyed, but thankfully a spare brake caliper just happened to be around) later and all is good.

I was surprised too Jeff. Time has the tendency to erase some memories. Like what is stored in one's closets, pantry, garage, and storage building.

Dave came over to lend a hand, or foot if you will, and while he was here I thought I would look for other Porsche related material. Some of the boxes are heavy and Dave helped me transport them to a flat location for viewing. It's amazing what we found. His photos display some of it. One more important box is hiding somewhere.

Now with the early Magnesium 911 case that I got on ebay last week, and with the boxes of parts, I almost have a complete 911 engine for the Type 34 Spyder. That is two car projects away. First the Carrera, then the white 911, then the Spyder and the Corvair Pickup Truck. Gosh, all air-cooled vehicles, I guess you had better like 'em to enjoy the punishment.

Thanks Dave for helping to bleed the Carrera brakes and helping with all those boxes. I can't believe that I had an extra set of "S" alloy calipers, good thing cause we needed that extra bleeder fitting that was badly stuck on one of the Carrera's calipers.

After draining the old gas from the gas tank, and cleaning the fuel pump and filter assembly, the motor is ready to be put back in. But first just a few details for the motor like new gaskets, cleaning off, new plugs, and re-installation and timing of the repaired MFI pump, by Friday I hope. I still have a lot of other non-car related work on the plate that slows down the progress on the Carrera. I will post photos of the progress until it drives. Then we can post videos...

In 1976 I bought 4 cases of this Kendall Hi-Perf oil. I used this oil exclusively in the Carrera. An oil change takes 16 quarts and since there are 24 quarts in a case, 8 quarts are left over.

The 6 quarts that you see in Dave's photo are what is left from the last oil change done in 1988, minus 2 quarts used in normal operation. This is all that was left from the original 4 cases of oil.

I'm not sure what oil to use now. The Carrera always used this Kendall 40 wt. oil.
Maybe a multi-viscosity oil would be better now. Any advice?

In the late 70's I got 3 extra of these reflectors from Mitcom in Santa Monica. They were inexpensive and they cracked sometimes, hence the extras. However mine never cracked so over time I got rid of two of them.

Dave says that they are now rare in the Black Porsche lettering. This old one in the photo has been kicking around my house for the last 30 years (never opened until yesterday). Like Dave said, there is old Porsche stuff hiding all over that I'm not even aware of. Terrible.

Thanks for the link, Dave M. was talking about it yesterday.
Here is a quote from the first post.

"As a result of this lowering of ZDDP content, and as of this posting, the only choices I am aware of that provide adequate ZDDP Protection include (in no particular order):
Brad Penn Racing Oils (same as the old Kendall from the '70s)"

So Brad Penn is the same green oil that I have been using in the Carrera for the last 32 years.
Thank god some things don't go away. I hope I have the same luck with the tires.

Went to get gaskets, filters, etc, at Performance Products today.



All the needed parts were available. Two new oil Mahle 911 oil filters, a new Porsche micronic fuel filter, CV joint gaskets, intake and exhaust valve cover gaskets, fuel line, MFI drive belt, etc.




Nothing like original Porsche





Afterwards went to TRE and spoke to Dave B. and Jeremy. The shop looks great and Dave has a new Porsche Race Car for sale.
It's always fun to stop by and say hello to Dave and Jeremy at TRE. They helped me with a fuel line question today.

The underside of the motor needs a little cleaning, but not bad for 32 years.



The fuel injection and air cooling shroud coiuld use some detailing as well.
