Oh, yeah... and that loud, primitive KAH-THUMK noise the headlight assemblies made when they went up and down was unique, too!
:D :D :D

Also, the way they rolled up and down around a longitudinal axis.

Do you remember anyone running a decently-prepped Manta or GT on Mulholland?

With the straight axle in the rear, they definitely wouldn't have been in the upper echelon of performers, but they were a lot of fun.

Once in a while you would see an Opel on Mulholland. In a crowd of 50 cars on a busy Saturday evening many different cars of different makes would be hanging out with their owners nearby.

However your story reminds me of a very loud Wankel powered small car that used to race thru the course. This would have been 1979ish. I'm sure that someone here remembers that car too, it was LOUD. Perhaps a race prepped Mazda?

Paul Newman, the matinee idol, gentleman race-car driver, and philanthropist whose cool, rebellious charm made him one of his generation’s greatest movie stars and finest actors, died yesterday at his farmhouse near Westport, Conn., after a long battle with cancer.

Bummer about Paul Newman,
First Phil Hill, now PLN. Who's next, they say they always come in three's.
Derek, not sure if Adam Carolla owns that car but I do know that he's the
host of the new "Americanized" version of Top Gear. His co-host will be that
dork from Speed channels Super Cars Exposed. I'm cringing at the thought
of them turning that show into a cheese fest. Thank the baby jezuz for
BBC america ;>)

On a totally different note, I think awile back there was some chat about the worsening pothole situation. I'm not sure if it was mentioned before but a couple of days ago I was
going westbound through the course and hit a massive crater going through Carl's.
It was such a big bang that I stopped @ grandstands to make sure I hadn't cracked a rim.
I saw/hit at least a half dozen more on my trip west, just barely missing the other car swollower@ the westbound entry to the esses (I think some on the bourd mentioned that one before). Might be time for some midnight road repaire. If you wait for the city to do it
you'll be waiting a long time.
Peace, Kiley

BBC is producing the American Top Gear for NBC. Porcupine911 went to the taping and said it looks to be pretty good. That, and Adam Carolla said some things about the show on his radio show. One mentionable item... they aren't holding anyone back on bashing cars. They want it to potentially be as controversial as the original BBC version. Advertisers be damned. (See how long that lasts past the pilot).

My hat's off to Paul Newman. He will certainly be missed. He WANTED to stay out of the 'limelight' and his quality of life (including marriage) benefited from it. A true family man. Of course, it didn't hurt that he was a great actor and and driver.

I cannot wait to see the American version of Top Gear too. I'm on the fence with all three of them - Adam Corolla, Tanner Foust and Eric Stromer. I don't think they'll have the same 'connection' as Jeremy, Richard and James. That's very cool that they are not going to be held back though. I certainly hope they prove me wrong.

More on Top Gear America from the Top Gear site.

Derek,
I'm gald to hear that thier not being held back but that said I'm still carrying a backpack sized grain of salt. We'll see what happens the first time they shred some advertiser's product.
I also think that Carolla's humor is a bit lowbrow and I can't stand that Tanner Foust guy.
never heard of the other one. Guess I'll just have to wait and see. Not holding my breath.
At least we can still get they original. How's life @ the OWR?

no leaks

Went to TRE today and talked to Jeremy about competition seat belts. He expressed the importance of fastening the lap belts to the original side locations (instead of the floor) and fastening the shoulder belts up high to avoid spinal compression.

While there I talked to a Porsche technician about low idle and leaking injector lines and got a lecture about MFI procedure that was informative.
Idle cannot be adjusted like a carburator on a MFI system. It's a lengthy and difficult proceedure.
I did get advice on how to repair the MFI line leaks. Thank you TRE.

Got home and Dave M. (slodave) came over and together we fixed the fuel leaks and got the motor up to temperature.
It now idles better and stopped smoking. Thanks for the help Dave.

I will get a one day permit soon to get the VIN verified. The permit is good for 24 hours. I might just make a run thru the Racecourse before the permit expires, only to get the motor properly warmed up of course. Sometime between 9 and 10 in the evening "sounds good". ;)

That looks like one heck of a good time. All kinds of cars set up for speed thru country backroads. I wonder if they would allow a slant roof 911 Carrera?

(The race looks hard on equipment)

The vid only shows the competition class rides. There are other classes for the not so competitive ... (spelled $_$_$_$_$_) entries.

That looks amazing.
