I spoke to Henry at Supertech
I spoke to Gus at Pacific Fuel Injection
I spoke to Robert at Fairchild Industries

It's about a 6 week job at $1000 to $1500.


I have concluded that I should be able to repair my Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection Pump myself.
NO LAUGHING PLEASE.

I've always been told to stay out of those pumps no matter what, too complicated, too many parts, etc.
It's beyond what most mechanics are trained for, definetly beyond what I ever learned when I was working as a Porsche mechanic in the 70's.
Rebuilding a carburator is mundane compared to the complexity of a Mechanical Injection Pump.
However, is should be do-able and I will post the photos of pump repair as we progress.

A man designed it. Another man machined the parts. And another man assembled it. A man can take it apart, clean it and reassemble it. Timing it correctly is another matter.... For that they have manuals! RIF

maybe a video record of its' disassembly so as to have a roadmap for the return to one piece.

OK guys I have finished reading the thousands of posts in this thread, and thoroughly enjoyed them. I am now ready to come out of the shadows.

While reading through this I found myself reliving my youth in Pasadena in the 60s, car crazy even back then. Used to terrorize Angeles Crest in my 57 Volvo in those days. Remember hanging out at Frank Monise's garage and drooling over his Lotus race cars. Went to the Riverside races (Old Yeller and Birdcage era) Never did Mulholland, but my heart picks up a little every time I see any road with "twisties" in it.

Moved up to a 914, then traded it for a new 2002 in 1976 when we had more kids that seats in the Porsche (Still own the 76). Couple of years ago, I found my perfect little "canyon carver", a 1974 BMW 1802 Touring. A model never sold in the US. Cute little Euro hatchback.

We were very lucky. I'm going back soon to find those complete vintage cars that are hiding in the brush. They are worth documenting.

I've been catching up with garden work the past few days and five acres is very time consuming.

Please come over to photodocument the F.I. pump repair and we can post to the thread. My hands will be too full of oil to use the camera. It's on the bench and ready for cleaning and disassembly.

I also need to go to Performance Prod. to get new replacement stainless steel brake lines. I will need help bleeding the brakes and replacing all brake fluid.

I hope that Good Year Racing still has Blue Streaks for 15 inch diameter wheels. There is No Way I'm running street tires on the Carrera. The car has too much power and torque for it's light weight. Street tires would make for a Mulholland "Slip 'n Slide". I know because I've tried it. Besides it's no fun unless you're "on the rails".

The shop is very nice and clean. Much bigger than the last location. TRE should do well there. Congratulations to you all at TRE.

There is a shaft between the two banks of pistons. The shaft slides back and forth (this is starting to sound like a porno), causing these black doohickies to move back and forth.

Tomorrow, the attempt to free the stuck pistons - 5 out of 6. If we can get this guy working, the famous silver RSR should be running again soon!

I was determined to get things unstuck this afternoon, but Chris - in his own words, said "Dave, step away from the MFI pump". I was ready to get an awl and get those stuck pistons pumping again!

At one point, Chris almost had a heart attack when the screwdriver slipped and pushed the old rubber gasket in a bit. No damage though! He also managed to find some old Kendal green racing oil, hidden deep within the pump.

The cam turns very freely, but that was after I turn the thing by hand a hundred times or so.

The rest of the engine is in pretty good shape. The oil return tubes look to be in good shape. The engine still has the old non turbo lower valve covers and they are leaking. Time to upgrade to the turbos. More tomorrow...

I took a few pics of the moon rise tonight and right before packing it in, I decided to capture the passing car lights... A tiny stretch of Mulholland Drive.

Road to Nowhere
 

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the Mulholland Zone.

There is a road about 4 miles from where I live that reminds me of Mulholland Drive. This road has been called "The Road to Nowhere". There are actually two "Roads to Nowhere" and the other is in the vacinity. I will not provide the roads real name but it is a special road that very few people even know exists. It was built many years ago before the 5 Fwy. It's not Angeles Crest, Its not Lake Hughes or San Francisquito.

This road has one way in and one way out. No escape routes. There is no traffic or homes. Cops check it once a day if that! There are no traffic lights. The turns are banked ranging from 3 to one high speed 9 degree bank. There are no real flat straights. It all climb or down hill.

On the return run there is only one stop sign. This is where this special road intersects with another road. This other road is 6 miles long and also has no traffic lights or stop signs. It was built at the turn of the century. For its age it is in suprisingly good condition because of lack of traffic. Only 4 residences in the entire 10 miles.

Everytime I drive this road I think this is what Mulholland Drive must have been like before it was developed. The views are amazing.
