I'm really disappointed in the article. I spent a lot of time trying to get that pic.

Noah930 07-13-2009 09:54 PM

Sorry, Dave. Haven't gotten my issue, yet, but I can tell where you're coming from.

We both spent extra time taking photos that were potentially for the article and being disappointed is natural.
Aside from our photos not being used, what do you think of the article Dave?

To be fair, Dave has a real eye for photography. I have seen some of his images and they are artful, composed, and eye pleasing.

I don't think Dave will mind if I demonstrate his ability by showing everyone the great photo he took for Excellence.
Don't worry Dave, we are going to use this fantastically eirie image for the second edition of The Mulholland Experience. It fits there perfectly with Charley's Ghost.

They didn't use the time exposure pan shot? I was really looking forward to seeing that.

Dave, could you post it here?

Haven't checked to see if there are any Sept. issues in local book stores yet... soon, hopefully.

The September Excellence came in today's mail. It's great that this wonderful story of the days when California was less populated by half is being told to a national print audience. Sure, the pix could be better, but I liked the story. I'm glad that the Roger Kraus referral worked out; all of us who have followed and contributed to this thread feel a bond with Chris, his RSR, and each other. Makes me want to drag out the Carrera and tear up the night... Thank you for sharing this little slice of history.

I can understand Dave's disappointment, but I thought that it was a decent article. You have to remember, this isn't Life Magazine or Vanity Fair we're talking about here. This is Excellence. To me, the technical stuff seemed to be the point of it all, and the car itself central. Nobody will understand the emotional pull of Mul until you've driven it in the black of night, balls out, with LA and the Valley shimmering down below. Leave that for the book.

Nice article Chris I have been following this thread since day one. It would have been nice to see the car in the living room in article and picture of notched door for the chop top.
Dave spooky picture of the sign but very good your pictures in this thread are better than the pictures in Excellence in my opinion.
Thank you Chris for a great car with a history.

I liked the article. I learned some things that I didn't read in this thread, but it was nice having some background before reading it.

Netspeed 07-17-2009 08:36 AM

I can't believe I still don't have my issue

Checked Barnes & Noble this afternoon...

August :(

slodave 07-17-2009 11:38 PM

Hey John,

Here's the pic that I worked so hard on... Other than a resize and a little sharpening, it's how it was taken. This was a very difficult shot. I'm actually not completely happy with it, but time was running out. It does have some room for PS help though.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247902424.jpg

The Mulholland/stop sign that Chris posted, was the other pic.

The article was a good read. The article doesn't compare to actually being there today. Looking at all of the receipts in Chris' kitchen is priceless. My disappointment, was really do to the time between taking the pic and when the issue actually came out - especially the last couple of weeks. :)

Dave

P.S. I have other pix from Aspen - no Porsche content, that I very proud of and at least one is contest worthy.

Heel n Toe 07-17-2009 11:49 PM

I like that photo, Dave. :)

I especially like the way that very faint blur comes off the right headlight and trails back along the body... and also the way another one begins at the bottom edge of the windshield and does the same thing... it reminds me of the smoke in a windtunnel test.

   They shoulda used it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave, that picture NAILS it.

What's wrong with the photos in Excellence is that all but one were taken in daylight. Street racing happens at NIGHT. It's tough to shoot in the dark, but in the Seventies Chris's RSR probably didn't see much sunlight. The curves and the silver paint really pop in your time exposure/flash shot. I'm a NorCal guy and I never saw the RSR in the day, but in my mind's eye that car is supposed to be seen at night, emerging from the darkness into the circle of a streetlight, or flashing around a curve and catching the glow from L.A. down below.

You didn't just take a picture of a car, you captured a mood. Very evocative. You know how to shoot cars (and I've hung out with some of the pros).

Dave the pic is awesome!!!!!

Brillo 07-18-2009 06:09 PM

Great pic Dave!

Finally got my issue in the mail today.

slodave 07-18-2009 11:09 PM

Thank you for the compliments. I will revisit this shot in the near future, for myself.

I guess next up, is a little video action. I can't wait!

We are ready for video this week. (Dave, Keith, and/or Marc)
As the Shuttle commander says, "We have a go with throttle up"

The warm Santa Ana nights have returned since last year's end of summer.

I wonder if any foggy nights are in store for us in the near future ;)
The fog acts as a shield and is super fun to drive on Mulholland in, might make a cool video if the road can still be seen with headlights.

Let's follow the video up with a Mulholland meeting, we haven't had one in a long time. Perhaps at a new location that will be disclosed the night of our getting together. (This thread is now probably monitored by Law Enforcement, hopefully they havn't seen the Excellence article about an "Outlaw Racer" from the past).

Please check the map below to suggest a new meeting location.

In the past we have generally met on Thursday evenings but we could do it on another night. If there is a preference, please post your suggestion.

This morning Dave and I received a nice email from Peter Linsky of Excellence Magazine. Peter is a very considerate person and it was sure nice of him to give us a heads up on the article and photos. Thank you again Peter for your fine article.

Good morning, Chris and Dave-

I was just looking at the Pelican chatroom thread...and noted some disappointment at the photos used in the article. I want all to know that I submitted everything I shot, plus all of yours and Dave's, but once the story is in the editor's hands, the art director picks and chooses what he wants to use. As I noted the other day, the article was trimmed and edited considerably, as were all the others in that issue. You'll note that the magazine has also reduced its page count, and that's due to a dropoff in advertising revenues...an unfortunate byproduct of the current economy, and one I hope is only temporary. That forces shorter articles. I really had hoped that they would use Dave's time exposure and the street sign shot for additional flavor...but they didn't. Sorry some feathers were ruffled.

Cheers!

Nice, thoughtful follow-up note from Mr. Linsky.

Perhaps we can decide upon a date, and since everybody knows everybody on this thread, just call each other on said date to spread word of the location? Anyone interested who's lurking and not part of the regular crew can just PM their interest and we'll phone 'em that day, as well?

Or, heck, screw the LEO internet patrol. Just post the time and date, here. It's not like we're actually trying to reenact racing on Mul at these get togethers. Other than peaceably gathering on the side of a road after dark, I can't think of any other laws we're violating.

porsche4life 07-19-2009 09:22 AM

You might want to decide on a date via mass PMs....
