What happened to the Mulholland "King of the Hill" RSR?

Since the interior Garage has both 911s inside again I thought it appropriate to hang the Porsche Crest on the Garage Side Door.

I had other plans for the Crest but time waits for no one. So up it goes.

A nostalgic bunch we are.

A while back I located high resolution aerial images. The problem was the monster file size (25 to 50 mb Tiffs) which our parents paid for with tax dollars. If you down load them locally they are great. I have a ton of imaging and video software, plug ins that are lossless. Our host unfortunately is not lossless when they resize them for us. My guess would be best to download the image and then zoom in on your on. I keyed the images with a green star on the water tank at Bowmont and Mulholland as a landmark. Lets give it a try.

Lets start with 1971. Oh well. The resize from our host kills the resolution and they pixelate.

The water tank has been present forever. At least back to 1938. It appears the area above the race course was just a few large properties, an orchard or ranch.

A little trivia I recently learned.

Twice the city terraced the area below and north of Grandstands. First time was simple grading for erosion. Between 1955 and 1960 a series of small landslides occurred which are visible in these two images from 1960 and 1962. The decision to re-grade and cut deep was made to correct the unstable area. A quasi catch basin or funnel was created.

As a kid I used to ride my bike from "The Rain Forest" fire road below and pop up at Grandstands. Then when they planned the tract to be built a chain link fence went up and put a damper on my dirt bike riding as new grading began around 1979.

From what I have heard over the years they have always had earth movement and stability issues in that area. Later J-Lo bought the house furthest south right under the old Grandstand area which is now a berm. That killed the once historic view we had. All those properties had earth movement issues.

10/10ths is a phrase that, as you know, has probably been around for even longer than you have. You're taking it as a measure of the absolute limits of physics. OK, that can be one interpretation.

But it's also a euphemism than can be used as a gauge of one's own personal limits. How close can an individual drive to his/her limits before losing control. So part of it will be the equipment and conditions (as in your interpretation), and part of it will be determined by the skill of the driver. So your 10/10ths will be different than another's 10/10ths. And that's OK, because the phrase is meant as a gauge to how hard someone can drive before they get to that limit and start crashing cars.

Regardless the interpretation though, I think we'd agree that Frank exceeded his limits in that one particular corner. Too bad, as that car was always a real attention-getter at Supercar Sunday.

I called it a stupid phrase and explained why. That's all. It's meaningless.

Definition of euphemism: the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant.

Checking the Crankshaft Journals for an approximate size comparison.
I'm seeing what kind of work the Crank will need before assembly.



You can see the diameter of the most worn Journal is 52.5mm



Main Journals are 57.5mm and are consistant with the other Mains.



Here you can see the damage to the Connecting Rod Journal that is 52.5mm.
It shows some wear on the Dial Gauge. Slightly smaller in diameter than the other Rod Journals.

The rest appear to be good.
So the Crankshaft will need oversize Rod Bearings and a re-grind of the Rod Journals.
It's been a while since I last visited Dave and Jeremy at TRE but they are the place to go for good parts and Mechanical Work. Dave will know where to take the Crankshaft to be Professionally re-ground. I used to go to a Shop called Conimac. Not sure if they are still operating.
The Connecting Rods just need to be properly weight checked to be sure they are a matched set.

Original house was built new in the 90s and sold to JLo, she then spent millions on the earth retaining issues the house came with. Big Lawsuit. After the earth was shored up (never really sure though are you?) she changed the house completely doubling the size and promptly scarpered off to Miami. Just found another Box of Goodies buried deep in the Shed.
I should have everything needed to assemble a good 911 Engine.

I've had these Cylinder Heads for years. You can see they are from a 1971 and not MFI Heads. So they must be from a 911T that was Carburated.



I found these Cylinder Heads under some VW stuff deeply buried and forgotten.

The reason that I have been saving these Cylinder Heads is because of their incredible Porting Job done long ago.
Intake Ports are a huge 40.5mm

To give you an example, 2.4 MFI Heads intake Ports are 28mm for 911T, 32mm for 911E, and 36mm for 911S, so these are Monsterously Large.



Even the Exhaust Ports are full-blown opened up at 39mm, usually 28mm.
These Heads will give incredible breathing and Horsepower.
Good for an extra 50 Horsepower approximately.

Somewhere is the Valves, Springs, and Retainers.
I'll need to look for them.

The reason I was able to get these Cylinder Heads is because they were damaged.
Burnt Valve Guides for the Exhaust Valves.



They are melted away and will need full replacement.
The Brass Guides are gone where they were exposed to extreme heat in the Exhaust Port.



Now for the reason:

When Air Ports are opened up in any Cylinder Head they can move more air and at a faster rate.
So, if more air gets into the Combustion Chamber and not enough appropriate fuel is supplied, the result is a "Lean" mixture.

This means that the Fuel to Air mixture is changed so that it is out of balance and all that Oxygen that it is in over quantity in relation to the Fuel makes it hotter than you know what.
The end result is burned Valve Guides.

So I will use Carburators instead of machining out for MFI Fuel Injection Nozzles.
Only with Carburators can we En-richen the holy heck out of the Mixture which will be necessary to prevent this from happening again with these Ported Cylinder Heads.

I bet these Guides were roasted on a hot July day at Willow doing hot laps.
