Here's a shock for Kieth

The MGB I still have (how many of us from CRE still have their Mulholland car?). What may come as a shock is that CRE has remained in contact ever since. Recognize this guy?

Obscure or unclear

You can do it page by page using the latest Adobe Reader 8 (download it here). You open the PDF file in the new reader and go to the first page you want to convert and select Edit-->Copy File to Clipboard from the menu bar. Then open your imaging program and Edit-->Paste the page into a new image file and save it as a jpeg. Repeat for each page you want to convert, saving each one with a different file name.

Or you could upload the PDF file to a free web-hosting site and just post a link to it here. Or send it to me by email and I'll do it for you, if these directions are too obscure or unclear.

This is a great thread, I'd be willing to convert and post the article to keep it expanding and growing.

Red LeGrand? MX5? reason for living ? (btw the photo I just up loaded is of the person most often called "The Father of the Miata" probably wouldn't admit to being CRE now - but he was) Gimme an address to mail it to.

Yea I recognize Bob Hall no matter how he disguizes his nose !
I remember selling my 510 in 1974 for $5500.00 that was a great deal.
I bought a Black Lotus Elan 1969 for $2500.00 ! Elan needed tires love and care. So there I was at Muholland and Beaumont proud of my sleek great handling roadster. Bob Hall twin brother of Jim Hall being much smarter
of twins is driving an Ugly Mitsubishi Gallant straight from Japan with those geeky mirrors on the front, fenders tells me why did I sell 510
and buy that junk English car ?

I laughed and told Bob 30 years from now the Elan body style is timeless
I pointed out the handling of Elan was better than all other cars.

Well Bob Hall 30 years later sells Mazda on building an Elan sportscar ?
I surmize Bob took my opinion serious. Now he is purported to be the
father of the Miata. Am I the Grandfather ? I suppose I am.

I go to Beverly Hills High School Car show I 'm told Jim Hall is showing a Z1 BMW Roadster the doors exit under the chassis. I ask Jim where is your hipocrite Elan /Miata Brother ? Jim responds he is hiding from you.

The success of the Miata is evident that Colin Chapman knew what his design was a winner. Similarly Sir Alec Isigonis desiged the original Mini Cooper in the twenties built in the sixties. But the real sucess was Honda with the Civic and the entire industiy changed retooled to front engine, front wheel drive.
Congradulations to Bob Hall for finally understanding my opinion over the Elans virtues. HPV Thousand Oaks,Ca ENRIQUE'S La Carrera Cantina

Dave yes youre right, Not a day passed when something didn't fall off the car! I worked at the Beverly Hills Hotel and when I drove the Elan to work I drove like a mad man to get to Benedict Canyon so if somthing went amiss I could coast down to Hotel. Yes I had Bob Challman motors
in Manhatten Beach replace the entire wire harness lasted 30 minutes
until it lit itself on fire. I sold the car for $6500.00 and have owned 911
Porsche ever since. I saw an Elan recently with a Cosworth 285 bhp
Atlantic motor here in Thousand Oaks,I got bug to get another one.
Knowing you have to re engineer entire car depending on condition.HPV

Dave good story about Gulstrand.Dick is an ICON I 'm gpoing to have him build my 427 Grand Sport Spec Corvette motor.

I remember going with you to Vintage Palm Springs Races 1990 Caroll Shelby's one year anniversary for his heart transplant. We sat next to Carroll,Zora,Gurney,Bondurant,Phil Hill, what a night. Remember you brought your Ferrari 250GT/GTO ? I recall you telling me as you drove up to race gates the gates just opened up nobody asked for credintials
welcome to Palm Springs Vintage Races. Not this had happened with your 427 Cobra racer. Some friend of mine commented I 'm not impressed, I could get in event with a Official hat and a golf hat"
I responded youre telling me you are exicted when you drive a golf cart ? Guys Nuts. Now there is a story .

Might be this one:

Great thread, i'll try to blow the dust off some skeletons here..

King of the Hill used all studio cars,"Man Undercover" was a made for TV movie that used three ACR cars.My polar white RAIII T/A (the same one going through grandstands in the book)and 73RS Z28 were driven by Brian Kerwins character, and the hero car(Cassidy) was owned by John Hall.It was a 68 911 L "Tribute" RSR to Chris's car(with a lot more fender cheese)

On the book-yes it's a painfull read rife with grammatical and syntax errors, and clearly more research should have been done. That being said no on else has stepped up either.Chris will be the first to tell you he should have interviewed more people, but the guy that imo could pen the definitive account of the Mul is David Barry. He wrote the 78 New West magazine article and nailed it.

Dave B mentioned how some of the cats from that era are still racing, you would be amazed how many people who cut their teeth up there went on to and are still enjoying outstanding careers at the next level.

MM: Your Z 28 went to Pete W., remember? Pete went thru the car, repainted it a neat orange metallic (similar but certainly not as blingy as the Lambo orange) The ACR sticker on the windshield masked the tint and the subsequent sun fading of the surrounding left a dark ACR forever emblazoned in the glass. The poor car got totaled by some woman in an SUV doing a lane change on a freeway onramp !

John Hall was very talented in getting cars to go riculously fast up there. I remember selling him the turbo fenders/flares for that L. Amazing how the little 2 liter would fly.

Wow you guys are prolific on this thread...sorry about the delay, I am still a newbie at this so be nice.

TRE CUP - Thanks Dave for the kind reply, and I am glad to see you are doing well with TRE. I really enjoyed those days hanging out on the "hill". Is TRE a play on CRE? Have you kept track of the original CRE founders? When we made the jump to SCCA we shared a shop out in No. Hollywood for the cars. It sure would be fun to have a reunion.

I don't remember big Steve but I will call and you can refresh my memory...what did he drive? I am much better at remembering cars than names...sad huh?

SSB - Howdy...yes I remember Bob Hall...really takes me back. Same question to you regarding CRE...you say that some are still in contact? Tell me more...oh, and keep that MGB!

HPV - Loved the Miata story...I knew that car was too good to be an original design.

Jack Olsen - We have met at the RGruppe meets and Thunderhill. I am the guy in the black '78 Porsche you raced at the ARC event in 2005. Maybe we will cross swords again this year!

Everyone - I left L.A. and Mulholland in the fall of 1978 to pursue a career in "high-tech" in Portland OR...missed the hill ever since. After about 20 years of stress and success, I started attending the vintage races at out local track and got the bug again. What really did it for me was the Excellence article about the first RGruppe meet in Cambria. Something about the look and sound of an early MFI engine. I was hooked...been to every RGruppe meet since.

You guys want stories? How about the first time we sneaked into Willow Springs, at night, and almost had a disaster...or the time I raced Charlie and kept up...or one of the many "over the cliff" excursions that occurred.....

Start at the beginning. I'll let you know when we get bored of reading stories.

Hey who has that article that seems to be everywhere but here? How can I get a copy? I think someone had it in PDF, but anything would do.

Only vaguely related. It's too bad no one ever modeled a course for a driving/racing video game on the real Mulholland
