I don't understand those Geico caveman commercials.
Please explain the, "It's my mother, I'll put her on speaker" bit.
There's another where two cavedudes are talking on a balcony and another interrupts. I don't get what that has to do with insurance. It's also not even funny or clever, IMO. |

I think they are designed mostly to get people talking about Geico commercials.

Have you been following them from the beginning??
I think you sort of have to have been, in order to fully "get it". Man...these are some of the most entertaining and insightful (into the human condition) commercials on TV today. The caveman can be representative of many emotional states, as well as the stereotypes that are played out so often in society. I could see how social outcasts would be able to easily identify with the caveman's struggles with his portrayal in these ads. Somewhere, there is a long essay that one could write here... but I just dont have time for that type of social critique. The current ads, which you mention...depart a bit from the original strategy... with the exception of the therapist-spot... the party spot is more of an insight into their cantankerous personalities... the therapist spot can only fully be understood if you have seen the previous commercials. They are pure genius imo...The humour is in both the clever use of daily activities in which the Cavemen continually are exposed to the degradation of their image via these spots + the unexpected sensitive and intellectually manner in which they express their displeasure with the ads. "My mother's calling, I'll put her on speaker" is a great and funny line because it illustrates both the caveman's struggle with finding himself through this therapy session, and using his family as an example of why he is so messed up...by putting her on speaker again, he is showing the unexpected techno-facility that the caveman possesses (knowing how to put the person on a cell phone speaker). Its subtle and intellectual humour to be sure. Here is a little history of the spots on YouTube: Last edited by Sonic dB; 02-05-2007 at 11:17 PM.. |

I've had some enjoyment from them, haven't seen those latest. Probably won't entice me to buy though. Didn't Geico used to (or still) cancel your claim if your vehicle had a radar detector?

I like their talking gecko a lot more. The caveman commercials are like a lame attempt to redo Far Side cartoons. I don't think they're funny at all. BTW, Geico wanted $1900 a year for motorcycle insurance. Progressive wanted only $440. I think Geico must be racking up some serious bills with the advertising.

I think they have it 'right on' as far as goofing on the rediculous over-the-top PC world we live in today.
Some of the best satire and entertaining commercials I've seen as of late. The Gecko deal is has long since jumped the shark

Warren Buffet owns Geico, (Berkshire Hathaway) so I don't think it's doing too badly. He probably has those commercials made by some hick in Nebraska and since he runs them so frequently gets TV time at a bargain price.

My favorite caveman commercial is the one where the caveman is at the airport. He's presumably getting back from some weekend holiday (he has a single bag with a tennis racket sticking out of it). He sees a caveman poster in the airport and stares at it and shakes his head. All the while, there is music in the background: "Any place I go/ There's always something to remind me/ Of another place in time..."

Hijack here.
Now, the commercials that really irritate the hell out of me are those Capital One ads with the idiot whose miles have expired and so he has to take his family on "budget" vacations. They are so way over the top as to just be insulting. And the other commercial trend I can't stand are the ones where they have multiple people saying not in unison, but almost like in rounds "I pledge, I pledge, I pledge" or "I am, I am, I am". And equally irritating are the ones that defile classic rock songs because they can no longer come up with original jingles. How many car commercials have you seen with Who, Led Zepp., Thin Lizzy, even AC/DC songs? Get orginal!

Just replace the Caveman with a Corvette driver and it will all make sense.

Some of the best ever. The portrayal of them as New England new/young-money is hillarious. I die laughing at that damn leather fitted tennis raquet bag
