Chinese Version Of "I Take Full Responsibility" . . .

Boss of Chinese toy factory, prohibited from exporting after Mattel recalls toys with lead-based paint, hangs himself.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/13/AR2007081300010.html?hpid=topnews

I guess that's a way to "take responsibility" . . .

He should have just taken the American approach:

"How was I supposed to know I wasn't supposed to use those paints?!? All that legal mumbo jumbo in the contracts, no one really reads that stuff, and even if they did, it's too hard to understand. So it's not my fault."

we would have a much better country if some our leaders in Washington had the same shame and will to commit suicide when they screwed up royally . like for example, the Iraq War, broken borders (Mexican invasion), and on and on...

Read above some bank managers convicted of fraud (to the tune of a few $mil) that were taken out back and shot. That's a wake-up. Same with the secretary of Chinas export, I believe.

Conversely, the US seems to reward it's criminally-incompetant in these times with early retirement, buyout packages, pardons, and short term memory loss, only to be replaced by the same.
Until that much-touted "personal responsibility" thing is actually enforced, we're headed for the ditch.

And you believe it was suicide?

Look into some left temple, right handed people, gunshot suicides in Arkansas, then tell me what you think.

He probably beat the govt. issue noose by a week. The guy in charge of approving drugs was only in custody a couple of weeks before his execution.

Interesting observation by a report on NPR. The penalties for fraud, substandard products, etc. are quickly administered and stringent, but only when the crime reflects badly on the ruling govt. If instead consumers bore the brunt of these criminal actions, there would be fewer consequences for the perps.

China will be on its best behavior during this Olympic season. Thereafter, back to business as usual.

Sadly,
Sherwood

Chinese tend to have a little too much shame and we don't have enough of it. Sometimes those guys are told to go quietly to their execution or commit suicide and their families will be taken care of. Or make a lot of noise, fight it and they'll die anyway and their kids will suffer too.

"Chinese tend to have a little too much shame and we don't have enough of it."

Rick,
The Chinese govt. knew or should have known but decided to turn a blind eye until it bit them. Quick execution is their face-saving measure in lieu of better govt. oversight and less corruption.

China seems to be in its industrial revolution phase at this time, much like the US in the late 1800's. Has more to do with sustaining business growth than benefits to their society. One must separate govt vs the people whenever you discuss the country's objectives. They are often at odds with each other.

An American CEO would have dumped the blame on a subordinate and walked off with a 10-figure golden parachute.

An American CEO would have known better than to have used leaded paint...

No they wouldn't have.

Either that or they would have known and not cared anyway.

And people who play games with others on Craigs List for that matter.

Might be careful what you say in the future. Glass houses and rocks do not mix...

Not so sure about that. Without a threat of jail time, sometime in spite of the threat, corporations do what they do for their bottom line and officers do what they do because they somehow think they can get away with it (e.g. K. Lay, A. Fastow, J. Skilling, etc.).

Fastow sentenced, then shortened:
