I guess I'll be the naysayer. She's got chops, but imho plays too many notes. I found she was completing with Beck, not supporting him. Mostly in her choice of dead notes (and ones that should have been dead notes). She's listened to too much Marcus Miller (can be said of a lot of bass players). Would be interesting to hear her in a few years to see if she dials it back a bit.
Then again she's playing with JB, so more power to her. |

Happened to watch that Beck song this morning. Tivo is programmed to record "Great Perfomances" on PBS. She looked and sounded hot playing that boob-rest .... errr bass guitar. Can't imagine what Beck sees in her.

If you like her, you might also like Lydia:
She's Bass-tastic. I don't care much for slapping, but I'd slap the . .. . . . Oh, well, you get my drift.

My wife and kids are musicians, I am not. But I would have preferred some, as was mentioned, dead notes. It may be her training as a guitarist. I will say she has that certain something. I hope she never dials that back ![]()

A lot of guitarists-turned-bassists suffer from the "too many notes" problem. I like to think I'm an exception, but I will sometimes listen to stuff I've recorded and think, "hmm, I could have said the same thing with half as many notes." The longer I've played, the less I play.
As for her other assets, well, I they are what they are ![]() |

Re: her solos...At least she is not a damn "thumb/pop. wacka-wacka, harmonic let's see what I can do outside" type of player. Watch her left hand....great transition for an ex-guitarist (I usually HATE bass players who have started on guitar, much the way I dislike horn players who transition from trumpet). Nice right hand finger technique also. Very nice positioning, and when she solos there are good riffs, but unlike many "solo" bassists, she is a good "section player" when not in the spotlight.

What I saw when he played was a willingness to make you anticipate his contributions. He seemed to shape his worth rather than force it. Again, I like JBs bass player...I'm going to order her album and I think stuarts last post is apt.

That Lydia is HOTT!!! Great singer too...very talented...did I mention hot?
Tal is a good player, you can tell that she has guitar experience by the way that she solos, choices of notest etc. Am I the only one that that is not crazy about Beck's tone lately? Kinda processed too much and that vibrato is way out of control now...I liked his stuff from the 70s and 80s better, still an incredible player though. |

Oh, how I love this BBS. This young lady, to my very untrained musical ear, is very, very good. And yet there are folks here who would pick her apart. So how did all of you guitar / bass heroes do it the last time you played with Jeff beck?

I've never played with Jeff Beck. But I've played. A lot. There are tons of good players out there. There are a few great ones.
I offer my (pretty tame) criticisms, and I put my own stuff out there for people to likewise criticize (egt http://simpleflower.com/sounds.php). To me that's about as viable as I can be. I put less stock in those who criticize but don't produce. Like I said, she's got chops. And she'll likely get better. But I still think "too many notes." That is to my fairly trained musical ear that has been gigging on and off since around 1977. ymmv. |

In the above U-Tube piece, her role wasn't merely to provide a Bass Line but to be a foil or be a rhythm guitarist against JB. Experience leads one to know less is more. She seems to understand the art of subtlety in her phrasing. But from this one piece I can't tell if she is a mere technician.
I was going to mention Jack Bruce and Cream before I saw the Cream U-Tube piece. Listening to Cream run is like taking a hit of Spike up the nose. Pure cerebral candy. Bruce could run the Bass note for note against Clapton. The guy I want to hear is Bootsy Collins. I have just never taken the time to do it.

well, it depends. She was great at playing her bass. Was she great playing her bass in the song? Not so sure about that. But better than 99% of the guys playing bass in the world probably would have done.
The funny thing is that Jamerson would play easily as many notes. But they never got in the way and I never "noticed" them until I listened. Then you realize that the song was dead without him. Having heard Beck many times over many years, I know that he can play that song with just about anyone behind him and it'll sound like JB. |

Q - Did you hear about the time the bass player locked his keys in the car?
A - It took two hours to get the drummer out. |
