What you wrote above seems reasonable. Again, I'm not arguing for a theocracy or allowing a slippery slope. I'm arguing that it's not possible to keep religious beliefs from influencing government. Nothing more or less.

The argument above was that religious beliefs should be crushed once they cross into politics - it was argued vigorously and it's stupid. I was trying to make the point that ALL beliefs (religious or otherwise) influence government and invade politics. That our government has always been influenced by religious (and other) beliefs. The idea that you can keep beliefs (any "beliefs"), separate from government is purely ridiculous.

It's a sad sign of the selfish, immoral, self-serving society we live in. Screw up and get pregnant? Just kill it the baby. Sure, because the baby is to blame for your irresponsibility. What ever happened to adoption? I know several young couples that would love to have a baby.

Good lets force parent hood on people who don't want it or can't provided for the child. The adoption argument doesn't work either since there are thousands of children waiting to be adopted. Your proposing to add even more children to the already overburdened system.

This issue is about convenience and irresponsibilty, isn't it?

I believe people live anyway they please because they feel, whatever the outcome, they have an "out".

It's been a while since I've been able to agree with Porsche-O-Phile on the "Off Topic Discussions" forum, but I agree whole heartedly with him on this point. Historically, there has never been anything that "de-Christianized" a country more effectively then making some form of Christianity the "State Religion". It happened with the Anglicans in England, The Lutherans in Sweden and the Catholics in France. Germany only slightly less so since they adopted both Catholicism and Lutheranism. I suspect that Italy hasn't had the same experience since they already have one Christian bureaucracy in the Catholic Church, so there was no reason to mingle it with the government.

On the other hand, there have been few places where Christianity has been as successful as Rome, up until Constantine. Rome was already in decline when he converted, and as expected, having the state religion being Christianity didn't save that culture. But then Jesus always maintained that his kingdom was not of this Earth, so it shouldn't be a surprise -- at least not to the Christians.

Anyhow, this is most likely fodder for another thread...
