Easiest way to fiddle mileage

I am proud that my 88 carerra has 168,000 and counting. Would post a pic but every time I have tried it fails so I gave up.

I test drove an '88 a couple of years ago. It had 30k or so miles on it. Halfway through the test ride I noticed a black rocker switch on the left side of the dash, near the ignition. Very, very factory looking - but I'd never seen a switch in that location before so I flipped it down...

Yep, the speedo died immediately. Flipped it up and the speedo came back to life. I remarked on it to the owner and got one of those...

"well I'll be damned...."

Yeah, right. I might have been damned if he hadn't forgotten to disconnect his speedo bi-pass switch. Pretty neat trick, really and really easy to do.

Watch out for unexplained switches and always check the gasket around the speedo during your inspection. Those gaskets are a bit fussy to get back in neatly and might be an indicator of speedo tweaking.

I grew up driving MY (not my Fathers) 1950 Mercury, then had a 1957 Chevy and so on. Back in the 1960's when many of us got our drivers licenses a 1950's era car was still about the best many of us could afford!

My 1950 Merc was given to me by my Brother. He said "you get it started (it had been sitting in the back yard for 6 months) and you can have it!" I bought a new 6 volt battery and got some fresh gas (at 19.9c a gallon) and an hour later it was my first car!

Wasn't the golden age of speedo turning in the 60's & 70's? You'd bend ice picks in various ways and use them to turn the number wheels, normally without removing the unit from the dash. I think in the 80's manufacturers started making the counters so a white spacer would show up if a wheel was turned.

i think you should go into your local motor vehicle dept. and ask them if your method of changing mileage is correct.

plan on leaving your car there for awhile and make sure you take a shower before hand because you probably wont get another for some time to come and BIG LOUIE at the graybar notell motel doesnt like smelly white honkies.

at the very least you will meet new and very interesting people with lots of time on their hands.

i know for a fact there are openings here at the 5 - star resort "tent city" down on durango street. the accomodations are beyond belief. if you have done this to large numbers of cars.........FLORENCE will be your next stop and i hear the food there is very good. 3-hots and a cot!

I've not turned an odometer, but I've had to go into my console on my '89 Chevy truck twice. Once to fix the gear indicator and once to fix a trouble lgiht so it would pass smog. I was right down to the wheels on the odo. I don't know what year they changed to readouts, but one could do anything to the Chevy wheels from what I could see.
