You can get mossin-nagant M91/30s (with bayonets) for well under $100. Pretty good sniper/distance rifles and of course they've got the bayonets for those "up close and personal" zombie encounters.

I'm partial to Russian SKSes too - although they've gotten rather spendy of late.

used to be in da "old daze" you had to go to "M-1" school and qualify with it with an instructor. you had to be a member of your local shooting club, in my case az state pistol/rifle assoc.

i went and did this and it was a real honest to god "M-1 GARAND" class with giant cutaway m-1 /chalk board and a classroom setting. after a 8-12am session in classroom we went out to range and laughed at all the idiots who were not listening about the "M-1 THUMB SYNDROME". real giggles for us..............real pain for them LOL.

after shooting the snot out of targets with free CMP ammo, they signed our documents showing we had satisfied range time and class time and we were allowed to purchase. back then it was around $275 for a service grade ready to go outta da box.

never did it, and somewhere i still have my qualifying sheets.

do you still have to do this or just call CMP and drop yer visa card and they send it to a local FFL near you??????

Join the Garand Collectors Association for $25.
http://www.thegca.org/membership.htm

The requirements are much easier to meet than they once were:
http://www.thecmp.org/eligibility.htm

You used to have to shoot a match, now they just require that you "provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures."

Private sale between people in CA is not illegal...all you need to do is go to an FFL to bona fide the sale with the state.

A non FFL can sell to a non FFL in another state so long as you send the firearm to an FFL in the purchasers state. All the local laws are then satisfied by the purchasers FFL.

Go to the website. Being a member of many shooting ranges qualifies. I believe taking certain courses can qualify you for the shooting activity. If you get a Utah CHL, that will definitely count.

My CHL qualifies me for my "shooting activity" and my membership in TSRA is my member qualification.

The M1 is a great rifle. So is the Springfield 1903. And they use the same ammunition, which they sell surplus.

simply put i would rather have a BAR in 30.06, nothing against the garand at all. i did see in shotgun news last month a company selling fully legal/semi-auto/no ffl stamp of any kind browning automatic rifles for around 7-8 grand.

now that would be perfect for zom-beeez.

around here M-1 carbines any flavor even hodgepodge singer winchester inland ibm mix and match parts are becoming obscenely expensive.

Same difference. As far as I am concerned, it stops being a private sale when there is an FFL involved. Last time I looked in to it, the dealers all wanted ~$100 for the paperwork and storage of the gun for the waiting period.

There are a lot more names on that list than when I looked last, The Garand Collectors used to be the cheapest club to join if all you were looking for was an approved club to qualify for CMP sales. CRPA is a better choice for a Californian, as it is a state lobby group.

You know Todd, this hobby may cause you to lean a little more to the right... ( I mean... I seriously doubt it, but just maybe...)

There is no such thing as a serious skeet or trap shooter with a pump shotgun.

Everyone tells me I'm cheap at $15. I'd be willing to do any Pelican transfers for $10.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if this $10 ffl is cutting some corners. His house looked like a warehouse, several pinball machines, slot machines, huge aquariums, lumber and ammo scattered everywhere. He didn't show when he told me to be there and so his helper did it for me, but couldn't make change for my $20 and had to give me quarters. Pretty hokey, but it was for a lower a receiver and close to my house.

I feel better. How about I do $10 transfers for Pelicans with CHLN's ( carry permits) which saves me the NICs call?

I tend to pull a tad left so maybe I do need a little more right lean.

I won the auction on the mini 14, now just waiting for the guy to get back to me. The 10/22 arrived at my range as well, so once I get back in town I need to go DROS-up.

M1 will be next

Don't forget to buy a Springfield too! Bolt actions work when semi-auto units quit!
