Years ago I was moving at tax time. I had done my taxes with the state owing me around $27 but misplaced them in the move. I thought no big deal so didn't file. A year or so later they sent me a bill for $240. I wrote back and said how can +$27 turn into -$240, please send me my $27.
This went on for a few months til they froze all my accounts for a few weeks and took the $240. File by April 15th no matter whether you owe or are getting a refund. They love collecting penalties.

+1 you must file a RETURN or an EXTENSION by April 15th no matter what.
If you file an extension and are due a refund or owe nothing, NOTHING changes. If you DO owe and filed an extension, you will have to pay some penalties and interest. That's why, if you THINK you owe, you can file an extension and send in a check for the "estimate" of how much you will owe when you file. If, when you finally file, you will only owe a small penalty, but no interest, since you paid in April, on time. PS: I do know in a lot of self-employment situations, you are actually LESS likely to get audited if you file ONE extension, and do your taxes sometime between April and October. (My accountant's words, not mine.)

This is where you should be thankful you are not married. Think how stressed you'd be if that were YOUR money she's wasting. You can (hopefully) let all this go, after all, it's her's.
![]() I'm recently divorced, and yes, money was something that always fought over even though we had plenty enough of it with both of us working. I may share my home, bed, toothbrush, etc. with a woman again but I will never mix up the money with a chick as long as I live. Lesson learned.

Thankfully my wife has always lived well within her means...but before I began to help her she really didn't save substantial amounts.
An anecdote from early on in our relationship may help you understand. We were just chatting about dreams and goals and desires. I asked her what is one thing she dreamed about having. She said "Nothing, really. I don't go to the malls and window shop...If there is something i need I buy it." (Mind you her idea of a big shopping spree for herself is a couple of pairs of jeans on sale at Old Navy.) So I pressed...What about a certain type of house or car? "Nope...really don't think in those terms." Well what about a specific outfit or designerr purse? "Nope." Well what about a special trip? "Nope." Then she paused and said "You know, now that I think about it, I'd like to have a week off with pay." This was before she got into her own restaurant/pub. I said surely you take time off and have gone on vacations. She said, "Yeah but I don't get paid when I don't work and usually I'll only leave fior 4 or 5 days and come back to work early to pick up some extra shifts." I thought about it and later that year she and I went to the Keys for a week for her birthday. When we got back home I handed her an envelope with $1,000 and said "Happy Birthday...here's a weeks vacation pay." I dunno why but it really touched me that she worked all her life in the restaurant/bar business and had never had a week off with pay. She wasn't complaining or feeling sorry for herself...it was kinda a fact of life for her. To answer your original question we've never fought about money.

To determine if you need to file a Federal Income Tax return for 2008 answer the following questions:
Occasionally, individuals have one-time or infrequent financial transactions that may require them to file a Federal Income Tax return. Do any of the following examples apply to you? * Did you have Federal taxes withheld from your pension and wages for this tax year and wish to get a refund back? * Are you entitled to the Earned Income Tax Credit or did you receive Advance Earned Income Credit for this tax year? * Were you self-employed with earnings of more than $400.00? * Did you sell your home? * Will you owe any special tax on a qualified retirement plan (including an individual retirement account (IRA) or medical savings account (MSA)? You may owe tax if you: o Received an early distribution from a qualified plan o Made excess contributions to your IRA or MSA o Were born before July 1, 1937, and you did not take the minimum required distribution from your qualified retirement plan. o Received a distribution in the excess of $160,000 from a qualified retirement plan. * Will you owe social security and Medicare tax on tips you did not report to your employer? * Will you owe uncollected social security and Medicare or Railroad retirement (RRTA) tax on tips you reported to your employer? * Will you be subject to Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)? (The tax law gives special treatment to some kinds of income and allows special deductions and credit for some kinds of expenses.) * Will you owe recapture tax? * Are you a church employee with income in wages of $108.28 or more from a church or qualified church-controlled organization that is exempt from employer social security or Medicare taxes? http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96623,00.html

She's wrong about taxes and wrong about her mortgage. She's right about the unemployed.

I tend to agree with her on the withholding. Let's say she's overpaying by $500/month. If you run the numbers (12 payments of $500, 2% interest (typical bank rate) compounded monthly) you end up making less than $60 interest on the money in a year.
The simple fact is that most people will blow that money if they get it. If it shows up as a $6000 check after the taxes are filed, there's some chance that you might invest it. At the very least you have the $6000 and haven't piddled it away on small stuff. But you are right... doctors aren't great money managers. The CPA firm where I used to work now specializes in doing work for doctors. Assuming they get professional accounting help, doctors tend to do what they're told, have enough income to pay their fees, and usually make enough money to have some left over to invest.

generally, doctors are dumb as a sack of hammers when it comes to business acumen, trust me, I know a LOT of doctors
you have to pay on time, you have to file return or extension on time

i also know a doctor that is a common sense retard. (he should be in prison, but different story). i guess he spent all he brain cells memorizing the body details. criminy, how does one remember enough to pass a med test? the body parts names do not compute for me.

I read yesterday that if you owe but don't file you start with a 5% penalty/month on what you owe. If you do file but don't pay it's 0.5% interest per month. Don't know about if they owe you. I sure hope she's hot, because I wouldn't want her handling my finances.
We have combined accounts. If you have separate, why marry??

I bet she is just involved in other things, never thought about it (low on list of priorities), and doesn't want to have grovel to you and tell you how smart you are with your superficial knowledge of finance.
I have done crap like that. The withholding = lazy, procrastinate and don't care. She for sure won't go to jail for letting the government use her money for a while. The interest rate - I bet she does something about that sometime. But on the other hand it is a lot of work to refinance your house.

My wife was horrible w/ finances and had huge debt when I met her. I got her out of debt (didn't bail her out of debt). She's a lot more financially responsible now, but she's still not great w/ money. She's a stay-at-home mom, so I take 10% of my salary and put it into an account for her, 10% for me and the rest goes into a joint account for bills and savings. She can do whatever she wants w/ her 10%, but that includes her gas money, latte money, etc. if she runs out before the next pay check (I don't make a lot), she's SOL.
