Question Where did all the early 911's go?

I always look at the early 911's for sale on ebay just for kicks. There used to be 30+ for sale, now there is 4 (plus a 912 or two) ! Its been like this for a while. Two of the cars for sale are S's in the $70K-$90K range. I would guess that not many people would be buying right now, but I would think there would be more for sale. What gives?

My guess is the current selling environment has created a "hold them" market.


Also check the way your ebay is formatted. Ebay changed the way they have the cars listed. The first cars you see when sorted lowest years first are the featured cars. You have to go in a page or so to hit the regular listed cars.

Where did they go? Dunno, I have 2.....I think the nice ones are being cared for and taken care of.....The others will slowly disappear just like every other older car.......I remember when Chev/GMC trucks were a dime a dozen, one of every street corner. Overnight, they vanished and the price was 10K on up......

Why would anyone sell right now? Hardly any buyers. Even fewer buyers that aren't lowballers, dreamers or that won't make the transaction a nightmare.

From the buyer's side, they expect to get the deal of a lifetime right now and won't take anything less. From a seller's side, why sell in such a market if you don't have to?

A lot of them went overseas when the dollar was weak and the world economy was still booming. It was a steady stream for the last few years and also the major driving force behind the major price appreciation of them. That's over, but a lot of the good ones (911Ss) are gone.

mine is in the garage sulking because one of the used struts i bought has a battered spindle.

I think we are seeing some reality returning to the early car market. For whatever reason, they became the "cool" thing to have (in Porsche circles) about ten years ago, and prices started to climb. Then the speculators, with no real interest in (or knowledge of) these cars noticed the prices inching up, and they jumped in with both feet. Then the whole thing started to snowball, becoming some self-fullfilling prophecy, and prices skyrocketed all out of proportion to what these cars really are. The feeding frenzy was on. Everyone who wanted one (for the most part, for all the wrong reasons) felt they better move "now", or miss out forever. Guys were selling their SC's, Carrera's, 964's, 993's, and 996's to get an early car. It was nuts.

Well, now those guys have lived with their early cars for awhile. Most are finding out they can't. Or won't. Many are starting to wonder what the hell they were thinking. The honeymoon is over. Now they are finding life with a cantankerous old bytch isn't everything it was cracked up to be. They miss their creature comforts. They miss the performance of their newer 911's. The guys who cannot turn their own wrenches are finding out that it is no fun (and very expensive) bringing their cars to someone who can for every little thing.

So, they are bailing. The "drivers" prices are plummeting as the market shrinks back down to the true enthusiast, the guys who actually like (and know how) to turn wrenches. The guys who really appreciate the old cars, rather than the poseurs who merely jumped on the bandwagon. Granted, the speculators are a bit behind the curve on this, and the pristine concours cars will probably always hold at least most of their inflated value. But the "drivers" are dropping back to reality. No more average T's and E's bumping off $30k (or more); no more average S's into the $40's (or more). And I sincerely hope that the guys who helped push them to those statospheric prices lose their collective asses on them, and the rest of us can just get back to enjoying them.
