Spoiled Teens - Am I Just Getting Old?

Somebody tell me if I'm out of line here. Today I met my parents for lunch at a Quiznos near Wichita's premier private school. As in, no way I could afford to send my kids there (not that I want to). Obviously we showed up at school lunch time because there was a constant stream of kids through the store. Seen with kids driving just over one lunch period:

C7 Z06 Corvette with carbon-fiber front splitter and mean sounding exhaust
Lexus ISF
Toyota FJ Cruiser with aftermarket wheels, ARB bumper and winch
Brand new Civics, nearly new BMWs and Mercedes products

Seriously, WTF? Especially the first two. Who would buy their HIGH SCHOOL age kid a 400+ HP car? Or am I just grumpy that I can't even afford an ARB bumper for my Land Cruiser?

I had a '79 Chevy truck. Too bad it was 1996. We called it the *****mobile. It had a huge hole in the seat that I covered with a block of foam from Wal-Mart and a seatcover, and more rust than steel. Fortunately it also had a rebuilt 350 with a 4 bbl and a 4.11 rear end, burnouts all day baby! I spend a lot of quality time running over stuff in that truck.

Graduated from a HS like that. One girls BMW had vanity plates THX MOM.

The lucky ones only trashed the cars within a couple of years. The others crippled or killed themselves.

My parents could have bought me nice ride but in our family we worked for what we wanted, no Free rides pardon the pun.

Both my brother and I bought our first cars before we had learners permits.

Mine was a FIAT 124 Spider.

POS never ran right but always ran.

I don't think you appreciate things as much when you have not had to work for them.

I am always surrounded by kids driving BMW, Mercedes, other expensive cars, I used to think they were driving mommy's car but now I just believe they are driving the car mommy bought for them.
I have talked to business people around here about who they hire, mostly Mexicans, they said the kids around here don't work, mommy and daddy make too much money, these kids graduate from college before they have their first ever job.

Why so surprised Matt. You've been on the BMW boards. 2/3 of the posters there are under the age of 25 with lots of them still in high school.

There is a public high school a few miles from my house. The student parking lot is full of unbelievable nice rides. The teachers have much cheaper cars.

My 1st car was a 32 hp 1960 VW bug. My dad gave me a interest free loan, but I had to pay for it. I had to pay for 100% of the operational cost.

the real problem is that those kids will have a hard time in later life from being spoiled

No, you're not getting old... also, those may or may not be spoiled teens, but one thing is for sure... they have some seriously stupid parents.

Either the kid b!tched and moaned for the ride he/she wanted until the parent gave in, or all the kid had to do was ask nicely and the parent gave it to 'em... either out of some kind of guilt, or to try to keep up with the Jones' kid.

Either way, it's the parents you should be complaining about.

Not really. Connections they make from private schools and colleges, and through mummy and daddy, will help them plenty in the future. They will go on to run companies like AIG, GM, etc. into the ground. Or maybe they'll turn out alright. Who knows?

Ever know a kid that was REALLY spoiled? Like over the top, waited on hand and foot, mommy and daddy do everything for them spoiled? I've known a few and none of them have turned out worth a damn. The only ones that aren't struggling are......wait for it...... still living off of their parents.

Yeah, but 95% of them are driving $3k E30s and E36s and pretending they're ballers because they drive a bimmer.

Matt, looking back (way way back) on this spoiled kid thing makes me realize the same thing was going on in HS. Little Joey 16 had the rents (dad owned a dealership) put him in a brand new 70 boss 302. We palled around with a kid whose mother gave him carte blanche with her 69 t-bird rocket ship. My friends brother let us take his mid 60's Jag S to school. The girl (father owned gas station chain) with the mid 50's t-bird. I remember the kid with nice a 356C too. And the list could go on with a good shot of ginkgo. Grumpy? you'll get over it when you reach my age.

I read a while back that the biggest hits in the unemployment problem was 20-30 somethings. These people never had a job, mom and dad payed for everything and never worked when in college. When they got out they believed everything was owed them. They didn't have a work ethic, didn't really understand what was expected at work, after all, they went to college and it was owed them. We had some at our work, we didn't miss them when they went away.
