Ice maker install question
Wife buys a fridge without ice maker installed. Sales guy says "oh we have a kit with a rebate, Pretty easy to intall".
Yup Should be easy, heck I rebuild Porsche motors! everything hooked up water turned on under sink, nothing out at the ice maker. Hmm flip lever up and down no water. re-check my work wires hooked up water pressure sitting at top of solenoid but not going through. More head scratching, get meter test power at solenoid 22VAC flip lever up power goes away. read continuity of sloenoid coil it's good. Just not picking up, no hint of click or nothing. what sort of votage should go to this? 22 VAC or 115VAC ? No wiring diagrams anywhere, |

Lever up = off on an ice maker.
They are fairly simple, they kinda either work or they don't. Check the unit for packing materials that you may have missed. Happened to me once when putting one in.

Ice makers are strange when you install them. Nothing happens at first.
Hook up the wire and water. Leave lever down. Go to bed. In the morning there will be ice. Throw away the first couple of bins full to make sure you are not drinking little pieces of the manufacturing process.

OR....take off the faceplate. There should be a circuit board under the cover. Find 2 little holes with 'test' written on them. Make a jumper out of 12 guage copper wire. Insert the wire into the holes. This bypasses the temperature logic and causes the icemaker to run through a cycle.

Yeah, I think there's a timer thing. On the last kitchen job I was on, the stupid cabinet guy installed the fridge along with the plumber. They left the packing tape on the wire that gauges the amount of ice in the tray. I get there the next day to hear all this groaning coming from inside the freezer.
Working with today's tradesmen is such a joy. +1 on trowing out the first couple batches. |

Forgot to add that I install a water purifier in the middle of the water line to help the ice taste better. I put them in a convenient location, such as up in the floor joists below the fridge so they can be changed regularly. GE makes a $10 filter that works fairly well if the fridge doesn't have a built in one.

If its a fridge with a bottom pull out freezer drawer like mine. The light switch is an interlock so it doesn't dump ice when the drawer is pulled out.

Icemakers wait until you are sleeping I think. That's when the ice gnomes come out.

This cracked me up! I've only rebuilt one engine, but after that it seems like you should be able to fix anything AND is should be easy.
