I used to be able to joust and partake in swordplay all day. Swim in 60 pounds of chain mail armour. I doubt I can do that now.

I also used to be able to tell my wife that I loved her, and I'd hear it back every time. And hug her. I can't do that any more.

Put on a sock without sitting down.

Yes, youth is wasted on the young. Any explanation would be either unnecessary......or futile.

I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was.

I used to never worry about my future.

I used to be able to remember names.

I used to be able to do somewhat complex math problems in my head.

I used to be able to go see Michael Jackson.

The "flagpole". was about to do this move up until my mid 30's.
I still try to do the things Ive always done. My biggest problem now is the recovery period is MUCH longer.

I can still do everything I could 10 years ago. I'm 32 so I'm not too old yet. But I can still play 5 hours of tennis, ride miles and miles on the bike, destroy the competition in the video games (that's something that gets harder the older you get, actually). I swapped the engine on the 944 myself. Hmmm. I play the drums probably even better than I did back then. I can still differentiate too!

What I can't do any more?

Drive one of these for an hour in an enduro race. Be patient, this is a long video, but it captures the "moment" and spirit of the LeMans start used in karting. The actual start is about 2 mins in. What happens is that the motors are started about 30 seconds before the drop of the flag.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kddT3dagOnE

Wow, that put a smile on my face like I haven't had in years. The best days of my life. I never ran Daytona, but I was there for the Nationals in the early 90's. The video was made by the son of one of my contemporaries and National Champion, Robbie Harper. If that didn't thrill you just a bit, you're without feeling. Up on the banks, they hit 135 MPH.

My last race was in '92 at age 47.

I used to fight competetively, boxing, kickboxing, grappling, and MMA. At 40, my reaction time has slowed and my recovery time has grown. Still in good enough shape to mix it up, just not at the same, high-sustained level.

I ran a 5:05 mile once. That was the most exhausted and spent I'd ever been and ever will be. Ran cross country in HS: 8-12 miles/day. Now I get short of breath watching golf on TV!

Used to ride 175-200 mile bike races as a kid. Was in pretty good shape and one time rated nationally.

Have not been on a bike in years now and need to change that...

PS the older you get, you realize now nice a good BM is. As well you wonder if sex is really worth the hassle that most America girls make it.

I can't run like I could when I was younger on account of 2 blown disks in the back.

But youth isn't wasted on the young, because I didn't waste my youth (if that makes any sense).

I shagged beautiful girls, I drove fast, I jumped off cliffs, I ran a sub 51 quarter mile, I drank like a pig, I climbed mountains, I hunted, I read amazing books, I enjoyed...er....chemical enhancements, I went to rave parties, I went to night clubs in Spain(and France, and Germany, and Belgium, and Italy, and....), I chased some Belgian girls halfway across the EU just to get a piece. I used a drunk passed out Spanish solider as a battering ram in the hallway of an over night train from Barcelona to Madrid. I danced with a Cuban girl skin to skin in a Havana nightclub formerly owned by Meyer Lansky for hours, until the heat made us sit down and kiss.....and I never knew her name. I don't have a ton of regrets.

Fuch regrets. They're for the old at heart.
