One of the security staff, in fact the head of security got his computer hacked this morning. He received an email earlier this morning that was a successful phishing attempt. It told him his email account was going to be closed unless he clicked on a link and verified his password.

He called me after the 3rd email to ask me what was going on after entering his login and password information according to the instructions in the two previous emails. Told him he had fallen for a phishing attempt and to shut down his computer immediately. That I would disable his account and would send someone from IT to scan it for viruses and malicious software.

He told me he was too busy to shut down his computer and wait for someone to scan it. I asked him if it seemed like it had gotten slower this morning and he said yes it had. Since he was refusing to shut down his obviously infected computer I immediately logged in and disabled his account, then looked up his computer, logged into it, and shut it down. He got pissed.

While listening to him rant messaged the IT director and my Boss telling them what was going on and they immediately sent someone to disconnect his computer from the network and scan it.

I politely told him that those were phishing emails and had likely loaded malware onto his computer when he clicked those links and entered his information. Then tried to describe the things he should look for as clues that he is being phished like return address, the address the link goes to etc. When he cut me off, told me he didn't need to be told that, he just needed it fixed and hung up.

Messaged my bosses to let them know what was going on and the Director messaged back that he was on the phone with the irate security manager right now.

In a few minutes a PC tech messaged that he had found a keystroke logger that was filling his hard drive recording everything done on the computer, and another malware that was in the process of taking over the computer in the background. Luckily there wasn't anything trying to spread across the network, yet anyway.

After they got the guy back up and running the IT Director called me and asked what I said and did. Told him and was told it didn't sound like I did or said anything that would have gotten the guy so angry and that is was a good thing I shut his computer down when I did because I stopped the malware before it got to the point of spreading across the network. Told him the guy probably got upset that he fell for the phishing attempts, especially since he was head of security.

Called the guy and appologized for shutting his computer down and told him we were able to stop the malware from spreading to other computers in the company. And sorry for any any inconvenience. Did NOT mention he needed be more careful before clicking links and entering his information.

The lack of forethought is not recent. We are having VPN issues. Several people want to work from home this weekend on their laptops to finish up month end tasks. Some of them it is the first time they have set up a VPN. Even though we have it setup so you just hit the VPN web address with a browser and enter your credentials and it sets your computer up it is always a hassle that could have been avoided a long time ago. I tried but "I didn't know what I was talking about." and "It doesn't really matter."

When you buy a router the basic setup makes your network a 192.168.1.X private network. Internet routers will not route 192.168.x.x IP addresses unless they go thru NAT, Network Address Translation, which is done in your router. There is also a set of private IP addresses 10.0.x.x that are reserved for companies to use that are also not directly routed.

When the IT department first set up the network they used 192.168.x.x IPs instead of the proper 10.0.x.x IPs. And a few of the main servers are on the 192.168.1.X network. Now when someone tries to use the VPN it works for everything except for any servers on the 192.168.1.x network. Even with VPN it thinks those devices should be on the local network. And since our main servers are STILL on 192.168.1.x someone has to talk the employee thru changing their home network to 10.0.x.x including any printers or other devices that don't use DHCP.

Well, I did know what I was talking about and yes, it does really matter.

I set up my home system long ago on the 10.0.x.x IP address. I have no idea if made any difference for anything. We have a real simple setup. Two real computers, sitting side by side that are mine. My wife has an iPad, iPhone and I have two iPads and my iPhone. My iPads are her old cast offs. I have the iPad original out in my garage as my Pandora music player. It works great. That is all I use it for.

I have a newer iPad in my office that I use on occasion for the security system video monitoring and that is about it. The security system uses one of the IP addresses but it has a backup cell signal if the wi-fi is down.

Well I also have 6 video cameras and a DVR on the network. And the home phone number is actually an voice over IP number on the wireless system. And then there is the Tivo system that has the main DVR and the two Tivo Minis on the system.

I have one Wi-Fi signal on a 5Ghz signal called Hey You Kids get off my LAN. I have a guest Wi-Fi and a private Wi-Fi 2.5 GHz set up.

Dang I guess I am a nerd. Never doubted it.

The Elky is all fixed up an no longer hillbilly door function. As much as driving a El Camino is not hillbilly. I can't possibly care less what anyone else thinks about me or my cars.

The date I wrote on the old door handle was for sure 2010, but the month was worn off somehow.

While I was out there...

I went ahead and replaced the air filter and the fuel filter. They are not really connected to the door handle project but the garage was cooled off so why not.

I could not find anything in my little notebook of projects done to the Elky. Not too surprising. It is mostly oil changes and regular maintenance. Thing that just break and need attention get fixed and I often forget to write it down.

Now I need to find a replacement door handle to go back in stock and some more door card clips.

Found the door handles. Both sides. driver and passenger side. $16.59 for the pair! That is why I just keep driving that old Elky!

Wow, I went looking for more of the clips. Several sites wanted 5 to 9 bucks EACH for a little plastic clip. I don't think so. I keep digging and Found a place selling a package of 20 of them to 5 bucks. OK, that is my price range. OF course they had a few other things I have been wanting for the parts collection. They are on order.

You probably set your home network to 10.1.x.x so you could VPN into work which was probably 192.168.x.x

Have a wireless pan/tilt AirLink 101 nightvision 640x480 camera I can't use.
It has built in networking that works for both wired and wireless.
It's default is 192.168.x.x.
Can easily connect it to my 10.1.x.x network, BUT it keeps it's own 192.168.x.x network setting.
If I turn on my VPN and try to talk to my work 192.168 the camera's network gets involved and confuses the traffic so the VPN does not work.
Have tried to turn off the 192.168 on the camera, but it still tries to route 192.168 traffic.
So basically can't use that camera on my home network.

If anyone is interested let me know.

Drywall work is just like doing body work on a car, only larger scale. The advantage is it is not high gloss like a car. Disadvantage is large scale.

I'm about 80% finished sanding the ceiling. Miserable job. Tomorrow, I'll finish that up and sand the first coat of mud that's on the walls. This is the life.
