Our production workers do 10 hour days, 4 days a week and swing whether they get a Monday or a Friday off. They voted it in. It makes scheduling, planning, AND getting people together to solve production problems a much bigger deal. Made a lot more sense to me back when I worked in the Machine Shop and we had three 8 hour shifts, 5 days a week. Studies showed if production work is more than 8 hours a day mistakes are made that cost more than extended production hours saved. And we have had those kinds of problems, but they can't change back.

When we went to 10 hour day I let my department, engineering and graphic arts, work whatever they wanted. It only took 4 weeks for them all to go back to 8 hour days. Said it sounded great, but they were home alone while their wives and kids were at work. And didn't get to see them hardly at all on the 10 hour days. They also noticed they spent more time fixing mistakes as well. So, despite what production was doing, my department worked 8 hour days.

I used to work 4 -10's, and on Friday I would run around and do all my chores and get everything done so I could spend Saturday and Sunday con mi familia.

4 days a week is good, 2 or 3 is better.

Way back when I was in the working class, I used to work 4 9-hr days/week, plus an 8-hr day every other Friday. So, every two weeks I'd get 80 hours in. Having every other Friday off was very nice. Now, I work whenever I want, or whenever my wife tells me to, around the house, yard, cars, or sailboat.

sammyg2 10-21-2018 01:50 PM

Yup, we called that the 9-80 schedule.
I worked that schedule from 1996 to 2004. I actually preferred it to the 4-10s, because in the biddness i was in, we were expected to show up an hour early and leave an hour late.
10 hours turns into 12, and if there's a problem in the plant it was really easy to turn 12 into 16.

In my experience in a manufacturing company, our company never had product recalls until production staff started working 10 hour days. And even with increased quality control staff and procedures there are still production mistakes causing recalls. Personally I would rather purchase and/or be a part of producing a higher quality product. Especially if a major determining factor was how production staff got their weekly hours in.

My son told me that he is now part of a student engineering team that is designing and building ..... .get this ...... a liquid fueled rocket that will leave earth's atmosphere. It's huge, over 30 feet tall.

They aren't allowed to put anything in orbit but their goal is to reach over 120km in height IIRC. This will be a record for a flight that is non-gubmint/non-corporate.

RKDinOKC 10-21-2018 05:28 PM

They gonna take the extra ozone from the ozone alerts and fill the hole in the ozone with it?

Jim Richards 10-21-2018 06:07 PM

Secret chemtrails school project. You heard it here first.

Very cool, Sammy.

RKDinOKC 10-21-2018 06:39 PM

They are taking up a charging station/drive thru for the Tesla?

Just havin fun, rocketry is cool.

So who is preventing them from going into orbit? If Tesla just put a hunk of junk in orbit, on purpose, why can't they launch into orbit?

Good Monday morning all. I noticed a flt on the El Camino yesterday. The tire shop says it is too close to the sidewall to fix, and I need a new tire. One 235-60/R15 is over 200 bucks now? Wow, I remember putting a set of 4 on for 250 bucks.

Morning all. Spent the weekend cleaning out the garage and removing things that have not been touched in 18-20 years. Long past time to go.

flipper35 10-22-2018 08:43 AM

Spent the weekend playing games with our youngest who just rolled the odometer over another year on Saturday. Need to mow one last time but the pool is all set for winter though.

I have to clean out the garage sometime too. How about a barter David, you bring your tapes and we will convert them to DVD while you help clean out the garage!

Glen, 15" tires are getting harder to find in decent width and sidewalls for a decent price.

Sammy, cool project for your kid to work on. Glen, I bet there is a significant amount of paperwork to fill out if they plan to put it into orbit, plus the insurance policy in case it fails and lands on someone or something or worse.

I'm not allowed to leave the state. Something about the wife will kill me if I don't finish my chores......

The Tesla isn't orbiting Earth, though, it's orbiting the Sun.
Part of it's orbit is even beyond Mars.

Brent, I had to change from the 14 inch wheels I had on the Elky to 15s just to get tires that fit that were not trailer tires. The 15s are getting that way. I have the BG Goodrich tires now. General makes some in the same size, but I don't want one different type of tire with three of the others. The next set may well be General. If I were not lazy I would look up the sets of tires I have bought over the years. Lots of them. The BFG tires are decent, but they wear out really fast.

All the tire shops want to rotate the tires. I just leave the steering tires in the front nad drive tires in the back, and they all wear out at the same time if I go with tire pressures I KNOW work after 300,000+ miles of driving it. 36 fronts, 24 rear, if I am not carrying a load like 99% of the time. If I run the rear pressure any higher it just wears out in the middle.

We used to have War Bonnet Tech in OKC. We had lots of German speakers from Porsche in Germany. We also got the tire engineers to talk to us. One year Michelin screwed up and sent a tire salesman. He was pure salesman, and had no technical knowledge. The audience savaged him with questions he was totally ignorant on. They never made that mistake again and we usually got a senior engineer that knew everything about tires possible. He said he never allows the tires to be rotated on his personal cars. Of course the 911 is not something that can allow for rotated tires since the tires are different sizes.

Need to pick up a used rim for the RDX. One of mine has a slow leak at the bead. Dealer only wants $680 for a new one. HA! that's not going to happen.

GH85Carrera 10-22-2018 09:40 AM

Way back in the stone ages of the 1970s I bought my first set of Michelin XWX tires that was THE hot tire for performance. The only Michelin dealer in Montgomery. AL was a truck dealership. I had to order them in, and then have them install them. The mechanic saw all the adjustments on the ride height and tracks with and just had to monkey with them. The handed me the keys to a 914 that had the worst possible alignment possible on the planet. One rear tire was jacked up high and the other was slammed. I refused it on the spot, and made them hire a flat bed tow truck to take it to the dealer to fix the alignment and ride height. I learned that lesson. DO NOT let a truck tire shop align a sports car.

I was autocrossing a LOT back then. I wore out that set of XWXs in one summer. They were down to the cord in the rear. They were all astonished when I came back so soon for another set. I was clear, do NOT try to align it.

I watched them align a 18 wheel semi. They strapped chains to it, and applied huge force to bed things into place. I just kept backing up further away. Then they aired up one of those huge tire and I went into the office on the far side of the shop. It was terrifying, and they acted like it was normal.

Ah well. I suppose you could send her, can she drive a manual? :D

Glen, I had BFG Radial T/A tires on the Cobra when I first got it. The tread lasted a long time on those. Was glad to get rid of them. I jokingly called them my racing slicks because they were slick and had no traction. Fun and predictable, but no traction.

Question for you iPhone people. Can you set your SMS to sound a different alert for different people on your contact list like you can a ringtone?

When I wore out the R1s on my extra set of rims decide to just get faster street tires and not worry. I went with the then new Bridgestone Pole Positions, To find out what the best pressures were to autocross, I called Bridgestone. They actually gave me to their Formula 1 tire guy. That was when it was Michelin vs Bridgestone in F1.

He told me he road raced himself and used Pole Positions. Said amazingly enough there was very little difference in those tires ±3psi just be careful not to go over 39psi or they would get too hot in the middles. I quickly found that to be true. And it was great to not always monkeying with tire pressures at autocrosses.

The only problem I had with those tires is if it got to 15°F or lower outside you might as well be driving on ice no matter what the road surface was. Normally they did almost as well wet as they did dry.

Ran Generals on my Plymouth hot rod back in the day. Ran them much more recently on my BMW 3 series. Just don't over inflate them, the are really squirmy over inflated. Just great when properly inflated.

Holy Crap,

Just got a message from Fritolay. They have discontinued Doritos Toasted Corn. The orignal Doritos flavor in the yellow bag. What is this world coming to?

Porsche-poor 10-22-2018 10:29 AM

As a matter of fact she can drive a stick, but she charges a whole lot.
