Right - it is kinda like a mix between air from a compressor and a rain-bird sprinkler. Not at all like the slow methodical baby-rattle sound on TV. Also, the little ones cannot rattle until they have grown a few rattles! You just need to watch your step. We get 2-3+ rattlers in our yard every year and I only recall 1 ever actually rattling.

a friend was just over here after going to meetings 2 days ago - he's a herpetologist (snake scientist) -- the FL python issue came up and he said he didn't think we would ever be able to eradicate them.
I pointed out that alligators used to be an endangered species and now there are so many we can eat them (tastes like iguana) and make boots out of 'em -- but he was not dissuaded. sad if true, as these things are wiping out the native wildlife - not to mention a few toy poodles and, eventually. small children... he mentioned the snake problem on Guam as a counter example |

H-U-G-E Rattlesnake shot in Manor!!!
Rattlesnake killed 20 miles east of Austin. This bad boy measured 7 feet, 6 inches!!!!!!!!! Police Chief Robert Snyder shot him this morning (07/29/09) INSIDE a homeowner's nice yard in ShadowGlen, on the north side of 290. The lady had FOUR kids playing in the yard at the time!!! Chief Snyder said, In this drought, they are coming in closer, looking for water. They just mentioned today that local ER's are noting a substantial rise in snakebite cases. ![]() |

That looks like a PhotoChop job. Why is it they NEVER just lay it on the ground next to a tape measure? All big snakes are held up on a stick pointed at the camera. Perspective makes it look a lot bigger.

He was probably moving a little slow, dragging that poodle in his belly, still a lot of good meat on that big rattler, does not look photo shopped to me.

That's a pretty serious looking snake the cop is holding.
So, shot it someone's backyard, right in front of a bunch of kids? Oh, the humanity! Where are all of our hand wringing ninnies now? Why are they not screaming bloody murder? Killing this poor creature, who had not harmed anyone (yet), rather than humanely capturing it and releasing it back into the "wild"? Inexcusable! Discharging a firearm with children about? Even more inexcusable! It's a wonder they weren't all killed by wild ricochets from this irresponsible yahoo. Worse than that - they have all been scarred for life - they have seen a gun. Oh my... But wait a minute, boys and girls - all is well. You see, this was all handled by the authorities. No one was ever in any danger, because the firearm used was brandished by someone in authority. No reckless homeowner took it upon himself to take action to protect his own children. No, he called the authorities. Only the authorities have the wherewithall and proper training to deal with these tough situations, to make life or death decisions regarding potentially dangerous animals, and to use firearms, especially around children. The homeowner did the right thing. He did not act, he called the authorities. As such, all is well and good in the protected little world of the hand-wringing ninnies. Phew... that was close...

example: watering plants on my front porch..........watering an old metal firebox(metal) from mine in chirachaus(cochise) that i dragged home. usually a rat nest in there so i flood it. went to watering other plant and something told me to water firebox some more. next thing i know heres a 2 ft diamonback coming out of it right at my lil feetzies which were wearing osha approved anti snake flip flops. threw hose down got strategically placed rws pistol and plugged it in the head first shot after he had run about 10 ft after intial scare. classic case of marksmanship on my part owing to the fact i shoot combat wombat matches with my pistols every 4th sunday of the month. practice makes perfect and when called upon the 1st shot put him down enough to go get shovel and finish the bastard off once and for all. i have killed so many rattlesnakes i have given up count. have lost count how many i have run over on quad or dirt bike. gave up taking stoopid ass pictures and making hatbands and belts. their like flys around here. but was interesting about this juan was i left his dead ass with head cut off in front yard. took head to dumpster so nojuan would step on or my dawg get a hold of head. about an hour after my fight to the death with the dastardly serpent i notice another snake...................HOLY POO! run out there with full automatic black evil RWS assault pistol ready to fight to the death again! its a freeking bullsnake eating the rattler. good bullsnake. happy fat bullsnake. we like bullsnakes. we know how to identify a bullsnake vs. a CROTALUS snake. we educate others on this MARVEL of nature. we hate rattlesnakes and the only good juan is a DEAD JUAN on my property. 2 weeks ago g/friend found 6 ft green mojave at about 2800 ft elevation here on black mtn. then a week later (5) FIVE 4-6 inch green mojave baby rattlers at same customers house. az. herpotogic society stated "there aint no green mojaves down here"! well when he came out to remove them................they WERE GREEN MOJAVES! dumbass az. herpotologic society dude! we know our rattlers ................very very well around here considering how many times i have damn near been nailed by juan of those bastards! |

Charles, you should try to be more understanding and accomodating. Why, I bet if you were wearing OSHA approved kevlar socks with your anti-snake flip-flops that poor little missunderstood denizen of nature would not have been nearly the concern it was.

Around here our main bad snakes are:
Coral (have killed 2 in our yard, neighbors killed 6) Rattlers (haven't had them on our property, but seen them around). Cottonmouths (mean, ornery snake, that has CHASED neighbors kids....never knew a snake would do that). Seen them in the pond, but not the yard. We also have gardner, black racers, etc. Plus gators, snapping turtles, and the scariest creature I have ever seen, the alligator snapping turtle. A true dinosaur.

i am UNDERSTANDING.......................i understand that "the ONLY GOOD RATTLESNAKE IS A DEAD JUAN!" we have their B.S down to a science........................... 1) always have STRATEGICALLY placed ROUND NOSE shovels placed around property or HOES! all perferably with 8foot handles. 2) flashlights at night...........ALWAYS! feed dog=flashlight, take trash out=flashlight, walk around security check=flashlight, drinking beer=flashlight. now that its really hot here snakes out at night. 3) lil itty bitty baby wattelsnake BIRTHING TIME is NOW. late july and august. born alive, full trigger cocked 100% venom EVERY BITE unlike full size wattlesnakes which may only give venom 50% of the time to conserve venom for meal. 4) rat poison everywhere rat traps everywhere. no rodentens less chance fer wattelsnakes 5) practice pellet pistol shooting 6) when discovered ALWAYS have spotter watch where snake moves to. if no spotter available, haul ass for shovel/pellet pistole/ or shotgun if in rural legal area. there IS NOTHING WORSE than having wattelsnake split and you cant find him. sooner than sooner not later he will find you and it will be on HIS TERMS again! they are an ambush predator. ie. they hide out until i come along and then attack me.........or YOU! preferably YOU and then i will take all of your gear when you DIE! 7) as summer rolls on more and more people bit. this means less anti-venom at hospitals. less anti-venom or no anti-venom if allergic reaction you are FUCHED! 8) cost of anti-venom OBSCENE! be it for human or dogs 9) have drill down on where to take victim. no screwing around. no STOOPID snake bite kits, no cutting wound and sucking venom out(WHAT A JOKE)! 10) wattelsnakes in aircraft hangers SUCK! 11) 6ft wattelsnake = 3 ft+ striking distance 12) green mojaves= 2 steppers 2 steps yer more than likely about DEAD! same with coral snakes. 13) in az YOU MUST HAVE current hunting license to kill wattelsnakes(no-poo). 14) when bitten always kill wattelsnake. cut head off. take body along with victim to emergency room for proper ID and PROPER ANTI-VENOM! 15) if in rural area and bitten.......................hope ya enjoy helicopters and ya have insurance. ask me how i know all this STOOPID WATTELSNAKE TRIVIA????? dove/quail season her can get very exciting VERY FAST if not wary of yer surroundings! get to hospital A-FREEKING SOON AS POSSIBLE IF NOT SOONER! |

Charles, how about hanging a machete on your belt when you are out and about... and especially at night... you can reach out and touch them safely... and it's quicker than going for a shovel.
Also, for those times when you can't be looking at the ground for every step you make, these beat the OSHA flipflops... http://www.cabelas.com/snake.shtml
