Yep, the bear ate both of them.

When will people learn that animals are well.........animals and do not "think" as humans do?

Get too close and you get bit!

say what you will about felons and so on...I've been fact to face(well 20 feet or so) with a blackey and even from there I could see the immense power the beast had.

even a drugged up felon will slow down with a pistol slug in the leg or shoulder...not so with a bear....empty the clip into your felon and I'm pretty sure he'll drop, the bear?mmmm I'm not so sure

Bro there have been battlefield incidents of even small oriental men hopped up on drugs ignoring the repeated hits of .50cal BMG fire.

I once read a report of a VC that was shot with a 40mm grenade that didn't explode. The VC continued to fight until being struck several times by 5.56mm and 7.62mm bullets.

Never, ever underestimate the ability of people (or anything else) to utterly ignore gunfire.

The 40mm grenade hit him in the chest and penetrated into his thoracic cavity and still didn't stop him.

Once those endorphines and all that adrenaline gets flowing, some people (and animals) will only stop if you destroy the CNS, they bleed to the point of unconsciousness, or if they actually mentally quit.

I personally think the #1 key factor of "stopping power" is actually not related to the bullet or caliber used, but rather is directly related to the shot person or critters will to fight on.

If animals are tougher, this is why...because they are not mentally programmed that when shot they should fall down. A lot of experts think that the main reason people fall down when shot is simply because it's a taught/learned behavior from watching so many action movies.

Well, I can see it is going to be difficult to discuss this with someone who actually believes there is anything the least bit valid about those first two YouTube videos. The multiple camera angles, the close up of the cute, cowering kitten, and other clues would hint to most of us that the first one is at least a bit contrived. That, and the female bear is not much bigger than the cat - brown bear sows are typically not even half the size of the boars. In the second video, the small Asian bear (one of the smallest in the world) runs off (preceded by the same multiple camera angles "filming the confrontation"). Then we see a tiger (the same tiger? who knows) eating something small, black and furry. We are told it's the bear. Maybe, maybe not. The legs on whatever it was are awfully tiny.

Anyway, I'm out. I see this devolving the same way so many threads on this forum devolve. Someone with absolutely no knowledge of the topic beyond what he has gleaned from T.V., YouTube, and Wikipedia is trying his level best to appear an expert. Whatever.

I've hunted pretty much accross the west, from Alaska to Wyoming. I've shot a few critters in my day, including black bear and cougar. I've seen, first hand, how they react. I've hired guides who have vastly more experience than I could ever hope to attain in my lifetime. Some have "swapped hunts" with African guides, and have had the incredible good fortune to bag animals on both continents that I can only dream of bagging. Some have hunted the Kamchachta Peninsula for even bigger browns than can be found on coastal Alaska and B.C. I've spent a good deal of time in remote hunting camps with men like this, men with first-hand experience. I've learned alot from them. To a man they will tell you (the ones that have crossed over the the Russian side), as I stated above, tigers leave the area when a big boar sets up home. Stories abound regarding finding the remains of what used to be a pretty good cat. The rest, who have hunted the big cats of Africa and the big browns of Alaska, will tell you in no uncertain terms which is the more formidable.

I'll readily admit I'm no expert here, having never witnessed a confrontation of this sort, nor having taken a big brown or a lion. In light of that, I will defer to those who have taken these animals, and have run across the results of a confrontation.

I'd read somewhere that in the Pacific theater of WW2 Marines were being impaled by spear bearing attackers even after they'd been shot. Either their carbines didn't fire very powerful rounds or your point about stopping power is spot on. Think I'll do some research.

Big tigress with cubs, small bear in the wrong vicinity equals small dead bear. Same thing with the cougar. That maternal instinct thing is pretty strong. A lot of bear attacks are mama bear putting the hurt on whatever comes around. Big cats are bad to the bone, but 800 lb cat vs 2000 lb bear is going to have a predictable finish.

Adult bears are generally immune from predatory attacks from anything other than tigers or another bear. Some bears emerging from hibernation will seek out tigers in order to steal their kills.[29] However, in the Russian Far East brown bears, along with smaller Asiatic black bears constitute 5–8% of the diet of Siberian tigers. In particular, the brown bear's input is estimated to be 1–1.5%.[30] Tiger attacks on bears tend to occur when ungulate populations decrease, and occur mostly in the late autumn/early spring[31]. Large adult bears are generally immune to tiger attacks in summer, but have been killed in their dens in winter.[32].There are also records of bears killing tigers, including fully grown adult males and tigers whose sex and age were not specified [33], either in self defense, or in disputes over kills or for consumption.[34][35]

I've run accross the dreaded mama bear with cubs several times. I was actually unfortunate enough to be between the mama and her one cub on one such occasion, and mama and her two cubs on another. On both occasions the fearsome mama, with those protective mothering instincts coming to a full boil - ran like hell and left me with her cub(s).

On the first occasion, my partner and I were hiking in to hunt mulies above the Similkameen River in Washington's north Okanogan. We jumped mama and two cubs way too close for anyone's comfort, like about ten yards apart before everyone saw everyone else. Mama wasted no time getting the hell out of there, leaving her cubs to us. They both climbed about ten feet up a dead snag, where my partner got some great pictures of them. They were bawling for mama the whole time, who we never did see again.

The other time, my then six year old son and I were grouse hunting above the Suiattle River about 50 miles north of where I live. He starts in, "dad, there's a bear..." and I see a very small cub playing around in the berry bushes, not ten feet away. Ruh roh... where's mama?

Immediately to my right, at the top of a cut bank we were walking past, less than ten feet away and even with my head. I never saw her until I started looking in earnest - I had walked right past her. She had me dead to rights. Knowing she had the full tactical advantage, she elected to take full advantage of her position - and run like hell. She left her little cub sitting right in front of us, now less tha five feet away. Our dog was sitting obediantly at heel. So, we walked around the cub - who just sat there looking at us - and hoped his brave, ferocious mama would calm down enough to come back for him.

Anyway, you just never know. I was chased by a goddamn cow elk one time, of all things. Scared the absolute bejeebers out of me. I guess deer will do that too, sometimes, although I haven't seen it. I had a coyote seek shelter from a driving rain under the low hanging branches of a pine tree with me; he didn't notice me when he started crawling in. He surprised me, and I had time to do nothing but sit there with him. Close enough to touch. I thought he was going to tear me a new one. He checked me out, then crawled back out as nonchalantly as he crawled in, walking away and stopping to look back a few times, as if to say "schit... taken..." I had a wild turkey do his damnedest to chase me off one time (I wasn't hunting them, I was deer hunting). Pretty ballsy for a flippin' bird. He meant it, too. He was mad. Our size difference meant nothing to him. I even "charged" him, trying to scare him off. He not only held his ground, he came for me. He won - he chased me away. 1:10 size disadvantage and all. He wanted it more than I did.

Point is, you never can tell. Spend enough time out there and you will see some weird stuff. Spend enough time around guys who have spent their lives out there, and they will tell you even weirder stuff. And every single one of them will tell you that a full grown adult brown bear boar would absolutely destroy the biggest cat on earth.

Cats are well known to be able to tackle prey animals many time their own weight.

A full grown Tiger can take on a full grown elephant 1 on 1 i believe. (It takes a whole pride of lions to do the same!)

Lions are total wusses compared to tigers.

Thanks.

Tigers have no natural predators. They can even take on the biggest, meanest reptiles one on one.

A couple of hunting buddies got attacked by a cow moose one time. They were floating the Madison, fly fishing for browns with a couple other guys, all in one big rubber raft. They rounded a corner and saw a calf in the middle of the river. Bullwinkle's wife just exploded from the shrubbery about 50 yards downstream, coming at them hell bent for election. They all bailed from the raft and did their very best Jesus imitations, scampering accross the water for the cover of the banks. I bet their feet didn't even get wet.

The cow destroyed the raft and everything in it. One of my buddies just happened to have his camera around his neck when he departed the raft, and he got some pictures of the moose shredding the thing. To make matters worse, she smashed the cooler and darn near every beer can in it. Thousands of dollars worth of high end fly rods and reels, everything destroyed. They really thought they were next. Fortunately, she seemed quite pleased with her job on the raft, gathered up her calf, and left.
