You're getting great advice.
1- You look uncomfortable in these pics
2- Don't wear a logo, especially unrelated to the subject matter (I wouldn't mention anything if it were a Porsche crest though )

Personally, I prefer casual pictures because I think they look more genuine. But even if you go formal (which admittedly is the standard for professional work) you need to look comfortable. I would think a good photographer would work with you as long as it takes to get a great shot.

Get shot like Tabs would have: wearing a smoking jacket and sitting in a overstuffed chair with a brandy in one hand and a Cuban cigar in the other. I agree with the others: #2 is the lesser of evils but you don't look comfortable (or confident!) and the logo on the shirt has to go.
p.s. What does the front look like?

My first thought is you need to hire a real professional portrait photographer. These are OK for a mug shot, but a real portrait photographer will amaze you. Of course he will be expensive.

Probably the best bet is something casual next to of a peice of testing equipment.

This web site is from a local photographer I have worked with. Look at his photos of people. He make them look relaxed and natural.

I choose that shirt because I (1) always wear polos, (2) I like green, (3) I bought it at Eangle Ranch golf course in Breckenridge CO where I shot the shyt out of that course!

hmmm...prehaps you are correct...I will have to look into this a bit further. A nice professional shot may be the way to go.

I completely agree that the logo'd polo shirt is wrong on many levels.

It's a professional publication, your goal is to want people to see you as an expert and to potentially contract you for speaking, consulting, etc. So wear a jacket, white shirt and conservative tie, black and white might look good as well.

And by the way, the shirt looks worn and there is a stray thread on the placket.

I liked #3 the best, but the lighting on the 1st and 3rd ones is not great.

You need to get rid of the "off topic" logo.

The picture alone should make a statement about your book.

It looks like your advertising for Eagle Ranch. The book isn't about golf is it?

I picked number one because it's the best of the three but...

Get a professional photog to take some more... See if you can find one that uses a medium format camera and film.
Also, wear a suit and tie.

No offense intended but you could look a lot better than you do in those three photos IMO.

If it's gonna be small enough to fit on the inside jacket tab, these photos are fine... especially for a book with a title like Spend Analysis and Specification Development Using Failure Interpretation.

Seriously... no need to hire a pro when it's only gonna be 2 - 3" wide. Go with the second photo.
