Vinny, you mentioned he is a pothead... in the mid-70's, it was fairly common for people to lace pot with PCP/Angel Dust, which produces the paranoid/superhuman strength results this guy exhibited.

So even though I don't think anyone has recommended it here, don't even bother with pepper spray.

Steel doors and door frames as a start, and keep 'em locked. Other than that, maybe a few baseball bats sprinkled throughout the house. And a taser or two if you can get your hands on 'em.

Practice your chokehold, too.

Disagree on the bat.

You don't want to get close with anything that a psycho can take from and use on you.

Bull Mastiff Rescue and Adoption- Adopt a Bull Mastiff Near You

Garden State Mastiff Rescue

I have had plenty of dogs. Mini Schnauzer that was about as fierce as they come. Dog thought he was 10x's his size. Loved that dog but secretly was also scared chitlesss of him.

But for companionship and protection you can't beat a Mastiff.

I have never met a more loyal breed. Stable, personable, easily maintained big giant teddy bear lap dogs.

Despite their size they are very agile and fast. It's like having a 4 legged Lawrence Taylor in the house.

The guy would never have had a chance to lay a hand on Vins wife. Mastiffs will keep their owners in their line of sight at all times.

If you move to a room where they can't see you they will reposition so that they can keep visual contact.

When strangers come over they will immediately put themselves between their owner and the visitor usually leaning on the owner to back them away. They will not growl or appear aggressive as they size things up.

The first time you witness one go after something you'll probably crap yourself. They can go from a docile drooling lump on the floor to armageddon in the blink of an eye.

I have spoons and alarm systems yet have never felt as secure as when I have a Mastiff in the house.

Hoy crap, Vinnie!! I hope your wife and you can get past this event soon.

I can't add anything to the suggestions except that you ARE in NJ(mob hit) and, as I understand it(mob hit), there are some "family" members that don't take kindly(mob hit) to somebody messin' around.

Just sayin'.

there are ...or were areas where locks weren't needed. I didn't lock my house here for years till the junkie came home a few months age. Within a week he hit every open pick up truck and car on my street. That means ALL of them. Now we have to lock up everythin because of this doosh drain.

He will end up in the pond one of these days. Not by my hand...I'm just sayin'.

And I am just kidding BTW...you're a better man than I am, I don't think I'd have been able to avoid turning him into worm food.

The cop, I'd find some way to make his life miserable. Question his talents as a peace officer. Maybe better suited to perfecting the phrase "you want fries with that...".

Hope you guys are OK, seriously.

Time to move:

As of the 28th of May, 2010, 31 States have some form of Castle Doctrine and/or Stand Your Ground law. Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming have adopted Castle Doctrine statutes, and other states (Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington) are currently considering "Stand Your Ground" laws of their own.

That being said, not sure you can't shoot someone who bursts into your house and physically attacks you/spouse, regardless of where you reside.

No both front doors were closed. But like Flatbutt said, this is not the kind of neighborhood were people usually have to keep their doors locked when they are home.

Latest update. He is being charged with burglary, criminal mischief and assault. He is being held in the psych ward for now.

Wifes a basket case. She jumps at every little sound now.

My neighbor's wife came busting into my house (through unlocked front door) and accused my wife of hooking it up with her husband. The incident never got physical but it really had an affect on my wife (still bothers her to this day). We moved about a month later and picked up a nice "lady spoon" for home protection. My wife is actually quite the sharp shooter.

Since your wife was physically attacked I would imagine that she will be dealing with this for years. I hope that she recovers and that you guys remain strong. Totally sucks. I feel for ya.

WOW Vinny so sorry to hear, geez. No handguns in the house? Actually sounds like you reacted the best way and didn't have time to grab one even if you have one in the house. Simply WOW.

Good luck with this whole mess.

Very good advice, and get the press involved. I would file a restraining order for 500 yards, and hopefully his hous is within that distance, as soon as you see him enter his house call the police and say he's breaking the restraining order, do this everyday until he does jail time.

I got mad just reading this, I know protection kicks in and allowing your wife to flee was the most important thing, but I think I would have just broke his neck and be done with it.

Good luck man!

The judge issued a "no contact order" From what it looks like hes gonna be held in psych for a while.

Bunch of other people on the block are getting together and are all going to the police station to state thier concern

I go along with "Get a Dog".

I would get a firearm, too. An auto or pump shotgun with an 18" barrel. It is harder to miss than with a handgun. Before you do make sure your wife doesn't pull it out unless she is willing to use it.
