New Coffee Maker thread

Have done the french press, also standard Braun both make a decent cup. Looking for something new after leaving the Braun full of coffee while away to find it filled with mold this morning. Have a gift card to Williams Sonoma and found this contraption

Technivorm Moccamaster KB-741
Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Maker with Glass Carafe | Williams-Sonoma

Wouldn't normally spend that much on a maker, but the card makes it palatable.

Anything else out there worth considering?

Sounds great, but unless you want something to grind the beans for you, it is hard to beat simple and cheap!

Mr. Coffee TF5 4-Cup Switch Coffeemaker, Black
Buy new: $12.85

You want a super-automatic. It will do regular coffee. It will do espresso. A fresh cup every time from grinding the beans, etc.

I picked up mine from wholelattelove.com for $599. Look at the refurbished page.

I have the bean grinder built in. I think it's the best thing.

Shaun,

I got rid of my electric stuff and went to a french press. I am very happy with it.

Hmmm...I have one of these in very good condition (Gaggia espresso machine)

And would be willing to trade for a Carrera lid and tail...
They're about 5 bills on eBay.

You could always clean the one you have and spend the money you save on car parts. Bleach is just the ticket for mold.

I'm really happy with our kuerig. It will take out that issue with leaving the pot full and ending up with mold.

Hi Dan, haven't seen you in ages, hope you are well. I may just go back to a french press.

will be out in Thanksgiving.

I would do the bleach but my health has been in steady decline (ROI of 80+ hour weeks) so I'm more inclined to start fresh. With my luck I'd have some crazy mutant flesh eating mold survive the bleach.

hi Rich! aren't these the machines that use individual containers? If so, one of my things is wasteful packaging so can't go there.

Thanks all for the ideas, keep em coming.

Hey Shaun,

Yeah that is the wasteful machine. You can do your own coffee and not waste with it as well. Though I have to admit I haven't quite perfected the art of a GREAT cup of coffee made with my own ground beans yet. The packaged stuff is better than I have done.

Simple, Keurig. It also comes with a small assembly to allow you to use regular coffee. As far as packaging, I've found if you order from Amazon they use reduced packaging techniques, but you still have the small individual containers.

Cuisinart Grind & Brew

Got mine for $10 at a garage sale....they thought it was broken, it was just jammed with coffee dust.

I'm very disapointed Shaun. When I saw the terms " New Coffee Maker" and that you had already done the "french press" I naturally assumed you had a new gf and were posting some exciting pics to share with us all.

Wow...
If you want to use that method, skip the Technivorm thing and get a couple of Hario V60s and a Zojirushi digital water boiler/dispenser (also very handy for use with a french press).

We were gifted something that looks sorta like this (that's a Cuisinart... ours is a Mr. Coffee and doesn't grind) a few years ago, and we have a couple of complaints.

1. The metal carafe; it sucks not to be able to see how much coffee is left so you can leave more in it for the next person if you're near empty. We're looking forward to when it dies so we can get anything with a glass carafe. Haven't looked into whether there's an aftermarket carafe available in glass that fits it.

2. It doesn't have a heat plate to keep the coffee hot. The instructions say that you should run some hot water into the carafe from the sink and let it sit 5 mins., then pour it out, then brew coffee into it. Preheating, in effect. It is a double-walled carafe, so I understand how that heats the inside layer and space between the two layers and keeps the coffee hot longer.

I guess that's frou frou and coffee connoisseurs aren't supposed to brew coffee and leave it sitting on a hot plate... I guess we just want our coffee to stay hot even if it means it sits there awhile.

Just give us our caveman coffee and we're happy. Heh heh.

Shaun,

Things are well on this end. It was a rough spell there for awhile but life is looking up. Got the front suspension out of the 71 and a new engine being built. Finally time to use the French Press and work on cars, life is good.
