I Pad 16GB or 32GB?

Getting an I pad, do I need 16 or 32.
I'm using it for mainly for internet and email when I'm away from home.

Keeping the cell phone for calling and texting.

I phone is just too small for this old fart

Unless you want to store lots of audio or video content, the 16 is lots for what you're looking for.

You going to pay for 3G or tether or find wireless hotspots?

I recommend getting 16GB unless you will use it for storage (music and pictures, but even that is a lot of music or pictures) as noted above. 16GB will be the equivalant of about 350 ablums with standard Apple compression.

I would also recommend springing for the 3G. You can turn it on by month without a contract. If you want data for a trip you take, you turn it on before you trip and turn it off when you get back. My folks do this, it is a $15.00 charge, but it gets them 200MB of data while they are on a trip which allows them to e-mail their grandchildren and check their stocks from anywhere (no need to look for a hotspot).

Of course, if a hotspot is near, then you can piggyback on that and not use your cellular data allotment.

Disagree - get the most you can. It'll extend the useful life of the device. File sizes and demands on hardware are like government budgets: they never go down over time.

But what if he has to finance it with a credit card?

What... too soon?

1000% agree....

I wish they had a 64GB version. (or larger)

Personally, though, I'd be tempted to wait until the next gen come out, with a built-in camera, etc. Either the existing inventory will be HUGELY discounted, or you'll get some very cool new hardware features.

I bought the 32 Gig version for my wife as a Christmas present. I expect it to last many years and the extra money spread over the next few years is not much extra. I expect her to buy books, movies and music and it does seem to fill up fast.

I bought the Wi-fi version because she is not a true road warrior. She has to travel some for her job but there is always wi-fi at the destination. She can watch a movie, read a book or listen to her music while on the airplane.

I have the 64g WiFi version. Essentially there is nothing on it. I stream everything from internet sites or my home system. Movies, music, etc. are all streamed.

I generally use the pad around the house and rarely carry it with me. I could easily get by with the 16g version based on my usage of the device.

No need for the 3G as my iPhone 3GS is jailbroken and becomes a wifi hotspot with the click of a button.

+1... new version should be out in less than 2 months per all rumor sites.

Get as much memory as you can, I regret only getting the 16gb iPhone. Music isn't the space killer really, pictures and movies are. I would love to store more on my phone but with only 16gb I can't. So I pretty much dumped music outside of my playlists. anything that is not in a playlist isn't on my phone.

I have an 80GB ipod and it can carry it all...

I'm struggling with either getting the 32gb 3G or the 64gb wifi ipad myself. The GPS thing is kind of throwing me.

wait until you can use 32 GB- that could be an eternity for some. By the time you are able to you'll want to upgrade the device anyhow.

Realistically, you aren't gonna keep this thing forever (unless you drop dead)

I was just checking out the iPad 64GB

$699 - iPad
$ 39 - Case
$ 29 - Dock
$ 29 - VGA Adapter
$ 29 - Camera connector

$825

HP Slate 500

$799 - Slate
Includes case, docking unit with built in HDMI connector and extra USB slots
Main unit is:
64GB SSD
2 GB RAM
Windows Pro 7 (tablet control and voice command are part of Win 7 Pro)
Wifi
SD Card slot (32GB of disk expansion)
1 USB slot
1024x768
Bluetooth
Front and rear facing cameras
2 core 1.8MHZ Intel Atom processor

I don't think I'll buy an iPad 64GB. Even the 16GB seems too expensive. The only thing that seem better from the iPad specs is battery life is about double.

User experience is very different. Specs don't tell the story. If you're a die hard windows guy, then the slate makes sense. If you're not, then I think the iPad is a much cleaner/easier/elegant choice.

And more expensive!!!

And as far as user experience, I can do a lot more with the Slate 500. A LOT more!

What's the price difference to go with the larger size? From what you listed storage won't be an issue for you. But after you have it, there's a good chance you'll start using it for things you didn't forsee. And music/photos/video can eat up 16GB real fast.
