Reg work week, 9-5 or 8-5????

So, most of you will probably remember the Dolly Parton song/movie "Working 9 - 5". I've NEVER had a 40 hr/wk job where I was expected to work 9 - 5. I've always been expected to work 8 - 5 (or 7 - 4 or 9 - 6). Essentially, they aren't willing to pay for a lunch period. At least, that's the only thing that I can reason.

So, has anyone ever worked the classic 9 - 5??

No. As a lawyer, it was 9-8. Now it is 5-4. About 10-11 hours. Hard to be productive after that, for me.

My current (hopefully temporary) gig is 9-5, at least that is what is scheduled. I usually end up working 12-24 hours of overtime every week though so it doesn't really matter. On these "normal" days though it is nice as you can stay up late and you're still home plenty early.

In Europe it seemed 9-5. USA 8-5. This applied to school as well. Sucked big time.

Into the office by 8 or so, do mail and texts until business starts at 9 or so (when markets and offices open up), and gone by 4 or 5. It's a sliding schedule, some days less. If you ain't got it done by then, you won't. You're a patsy if you put in 10 or 12 hour days. Maybe you need another line of work. No job is worth killing yourself and all your relationships. OT is a seductive offer, all that extra money.. but I have seen guys recalibrate their lives and finances to depend on it, and when it ends.. Throw in a commute and you will be dead.
If you are going to work those long hours it should be for yourself and your family, ie, your own business.

I do 7:00-4:15 M-Th, and 7:00-10:45 on Fridays.

Technically I have 30 minutes of unpaid lunch, but most people take an hour.

Other members of my team do 6:00-2:15, 8:00-4:15, and 9:00-5:15.

It's hard to work until 5:00 in Bloomington, because most businesses (banks, stores, etc.) are only open 9-5 and are closed on weekends.

Did I mention that I get 5 weeks vacation, 3 weeks of sick time, and 11 holidays?

never 9-5. Closest was 8-4:30 or 8-5, as lunch was upaid time.

These days, it's 10-11 hours at work, with lots more time on the PC doing work at home, including nights and weekends.

It's easy to say that it isn't worth it, but in today's job market, employers seem to expect it.

Oh, and while I am told that I really should take some time off, there's always things that need doing. The result...no vacation time for me in the last 4 years or so.

I work 7:30 to 4:30 with a one hour lunch. I get to miss a lot of the rush hour.

Of course I come in 20 minutes early every day.

I usually start my workday around 5:00 to 5:30am. Get done around 4pm most days, 5 days a week. Couple of hours on Saturday and Sunday most weeks. 7 or 8 hours a day on either or both of those days if there is a big urgent project. When I'm helping on-board the drivers at the big parks, I can count on 12 plus hour days for a couple of straight weeks.

My husband is working seven days per week, 12 hours per day.

I have a young nephew who was quite distraight that his managerial job required him to work six days a week for a total of 50 hours (five nine hour days and one five). Told him he needs to toughen up a little bit.

Start at 5:30 A.M. to about 7:30 P.M. 7 days a week, 24-25 on and 16-17 off, only get paid for 12 hours a day + bonus, well paid so I don't mind doing the extra for free, haven't had an 8 hour/day job in almost 35 years

Nope it's typically 8-5 or 7-4. They never count "lunch hour" even for those if us (like me) who never take it or work through it. But whatever - just happy to be working right now so a certain amount of exploitation is not unexpected - I'd be doing the same thing if it were my shop.

The thing I want is flexibility. I don't have much about the 5 am part, and pretty much have to be working through 1 pm, but after 1 pm I have flexibility to use if I need/want to.

0700-1800 in the Pentagon, and that is much better hours that the first four years I worked here. At least we almost always get our weekends free which is better than a lot of the Army!

I normally keep the shop open 9-5 weekdays, 9-12 on saturday. If it's busy around lunch time I save it for the next day. I'm the only 'employee'.
