the "official" explanation of the helo going down was overnight temps remained high and when helo pilot put it into a hover to allow seal team to rapid descend ropes, helo pilot lost "lift" due to air density.


now if ya believe that, well you'll probably believe the "secret squirrel mode" button in the cockpit story.

It takes a heck of a lot more power for a Helo to hover, rather than moving in fresh air. You get turbulent columns of air being forced down from the blades, and the air cycles back up in another ring outside this colum. When a Helo just sits in the same place in the sky, this cycle keeps accelerating, resulting in faster moving air going into the blades. This means the power has to keep being turned up for the Helo to keep hovering. This is because the helo is now "paddling upstream" against its own power. If it was already stressed, it'd end up on the deck, no flat deck = wrecked helo.

This is why most helo's tend to try to keep some motion going, getting into fresh air. The lower to the ground you are, the greater the affect.

Bin Laden Raid May Have Exposed Stealth Helo | AVIATION WEEK

A previously undisclosed, classified stealth helicopter apparently was part of the U.S. task force that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan on May 1.

The exact type of helicopter is unknown but it appears to be a highly modified version of an H-60 Blackhawk. Photos disseminated via the European PressPhoto agency and attributed to an anonymous stringer show that the helicopter’s tail features stealth-configured shapes on the boom and the tail rotor hub fairings, swept stabilizers and a “dishpan” cover over a five-or-six-blade tail rotor. It has a silver-loaded infrared suppression finish similar to that seen on V-22s.

The aircraft was damaged during the mission and abandoned. The mission team destroyed most of the airframe but its tail section landed outside the wall of the target compound and escaped demolition.

Stealth helicopter technology is not new and was applied extensively to the Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche, cancelled in 2004. Compared with fixed-wing stealth, more emphasis is usually placed on noise and infrared signatures.

Noise can be reduced and made less conspicuous by adding blades to the main and tail rotors. It can also be reduced by aerodynamic modifications and flight control changes that make it possible to reduce rotor rpm, particularly in forward flight below maximum speed. Infrared reduction measures are crucial - the Comanche had an elaborate system of exhaust ducts and fresh-air ejectors in its tailboom.

Radar cross-section (RCS) reduction measures include flattened and canted body sides, making landing gear and other features retractable, and adding fairings over the rotor hubs. It usually is not possible to achieve the same - you can’t make a helo as radar-stealthy as a fixed-wing airplane, but helicopters generally operate at low altitude in ground clutter. Reducing RCS also makes jamming more effective, whether from the aircraft itself or from a standoff jammer.

in regards to the hover over the compound. now why would after extensive training on a mock up countless times not think about that(lack of hover fresh air) or take corrective measures.


my belief is NVG's caused the problem due to depth perception. but then WTF do i know. all i know is all of our white hatted cowboys made it out alive safely ,completed their mission 110%, despite using "GERONIMO" as a code word and taking heat for it. in case ya didnt know GERONIMO was NOT ONE IOTA DIFFERENT THAN OSAMA BIN BUN FEEKER! geronimo was a lying thieving murderer also. and he was killing mexicans WAYYYYYYYY before whitey started hanging around the southwest.

This was a major F-up in the mission. Chopper goes down due to pilot error, and they failed to destroy the tail section...

Pictures of the compound don't look that large. And well they fly 2 choppers for a reason no? And the pilot and copilot walked away, so it was a good landing.

I have doubts the seal teams get new grads to chopper them around. So prolly a highly experienced chopper pilot that just had some bad luck in a tough mission.

Yep, I'm sure it was an experienced pilot, just wondering why they didn't blow that tail section before leaving.

Maybe they didn't have time or they didn't feel it was safe to climb over the wall.
I wouldn't worry about it. Many Black Hawks have gone down in unfriendly areas over the years.

Also... It's nothing a 2,000 lb "JDAM" wouldn't fix

How many top secret aircraft have fallen into enemy hands over the years?

The Seals did the best they could. Regrettably once you have equipment like this in the field it really is on a matter of time before the enemy gets their hands on it.
