One point!! Failed by ONE point

Effin smog nazis failed my truck for being one friggen point over the limit. I just rebuilt the engine, it's running perfect but at 25mph it emits 35 HCs instead of 34. How pissed am I?

Run the tank as low as you can, add a couple bottles of dry gas then put in only enough premium as needed to get it to the inspection station and run the tests. Idea is to get it to run on as much alcohol as you can.

Friend of mine who owns a shop told me that a bunch of years back when my car failed, worked like a charm.

Would it make you feel better if you failed by several points?

if the coil or distributor is a bit tired, you can get elevated HC on the sniffer, seen old plug wires do that too

You could always just pretend you only speak Spanish and don't have any license, insurance or registration, then they would just let you go. What color are your eyes and hair?

yeah, thats what ive heard. the higher octane takes more heat to burn effective like so easier burn less do-do with lower octane.

High HCss can be caused by fuel contaminated engine oil. .A rebuilt engine often lets more fuel past it,s unseated rings and add some fuel to the oil. The PCV system will suck up the fumes and increase unburned HC in the tailpipe. Small amounts can make enough difference to fail . A good long hot highway run will burn off most as will an oil change (smell the dipstick and change the oil if you smell any fuel).
Timing off a couple deg. either way will also affect HC.
If your HC was high caused by timing then your NOx would likely be on the low end of acceptable.

Ontario tests vehicles on a dyno at idle and 25mph . Sniffs 3 gases HC,Nox and CO Plus gas tank cap seal is verified.Exhaust systems are supposed to be leakfree to be able to be tested. Vehicles are tested every other year . No testing on pre 1988 cars but catalysts and other equipment can,t legally be removed /disabled. A gross polluter (oil burner cloud) can be stopped by the police and ordered off the road until repaired but that seldom happens. There is a $400 repair limit for a failed car.Taxis and commercial are also tested but there is no cap on repair costs.. There are fewer old cars still on the road here than Florida as our cars are subjected to winter road salt. Some norther counties are not tested presumably because of small numbers of cars. More travel by snowmobile you know
