I was around when they began experimenting with the snowboard boots and foils. The first foil was a converted chair foil contraption, originally meant just as a tow-behind. Laird skimmed by about 5 feet from me, and all I could hear was a faint hum, kinda like a vibrating fin.

There were about 8 of us old farts making up the "B" tow-in team (we were just young enough to get into decent physical shape). It was a pretty controlled scene at Maui's 2 tow-in spots in '95-'98. My partner and I were actually the 1st to ride "Big Lefts", across the channel from Sprecks. Today, it's an absolute zoo at every Hawaii tow-in spot.

I'm happy just to be able to stand on a regular board. I couldnt even imagine trying one of those hydrofoil boards.

My new assistant surfs, is in his 20's, and was born & raised here - and as such is a proud local.

We have some "localism" and always have.

The invaders here are usually those who drive over from central Florida counties: 'Orange' (Orlando) and 'Seminole' (Sanford).

Anyway.....he has a board which he has adorned with scripture which oozes forth of his localism philosophy. I took a few pics....I have to admit I love it when someone doesn't hesitate to say what's on their mind and does so with passion and creativity.

We should all be like him.

Check it out......

We get a wave of outsiders here in the summer at a very beautiful and accessible point break. A very long sweet right right when it is on but a peaky barreling inside left appears as well on a west swell. Breaks from 2ft up to well overhead. It is a magic place as all really good breaks are, and though I have never surfed Hawaii - i've surfed enough great breaks on the east and west coasts and in Europe to know it is special.
And because the waves are scarce in summer, when there are any waves at all it gets crowded and the tension level rises.

However, I'm sorry - But I don't go for that localism stuff (see that first quote about forming crowds..that goes for the local crowds as well).
I AM a local here, and was one of the "Big Dogs" - but I don't feel I own the break.
One of the reasons I quit surfing for a long while was because I found myself sucked into that scene and on re-eval realized if I couldn't share and play nice I should get out of the playground till I could.

I realize where that negative energy comes from and it would be nice if everyone were respectful, but some people just don't know better and the ones that don't care are temporary problems and easily avoided in a large body of water.
Letting myself become distracted by the negativity ruined the peace I sought in riding waves and being in the ocean.

I rarely surf that point anymore - usually when it is bigger (and colder) and have never enjoyed surfing more.

(major tangent, sorry)
While other forms of athleticism are heralded and praised by society at large, some are lost to time.

I think I would like to learn to surf. I'm retiring in a couple of years. Too old to start?

So he's born lucky and gets to lord that over others? Being a local is cool, "localism" is just an excuse for being an arse.

ROTFLMAO !

Love it !
My classes for the local rec dept are starting as well (now that the water is at 60 degs)

Such a great feeling to watch how learning to stand on a board completely transforms people - of any age
The kids gain a visible confidence - and the adults become like crazy kids
