Any of you guys skimboard? Seems we should try that since the surf is always flat when we get out here

I did some skim boarding in my 20's. The falls are hard and the first layer of skin on your back is sacrificed to the sea constantly. It's not something I'd want to do in my mid-50's.

Pretty funny timing - I was out today playing around with this (recent acquisition):

Fun - the body eventually remembers how to do it. Been about 20 years since I last played around on one!

Didn't get up on any waves on our trip to SoCal this time. Did spend a few hours floating around Mission Bay on a SUP though. Going to have to invest in a fleet of SUPs now. Thuy and I have always loved it, but our 10yr/old was hooked this week. In just about an hour he was standing up and cruising all over the bay by himself! Little brother is still unsure, but hes weird about water period, and lost his mind when I got him 10yds from shore in a kayak.

Good for you and Thuy, Sid. I'm not a SUP guy myself but I think anyway you can get wet is good and some days (like today here) it is FLAT!

I hated SUP's until I bought one last year when my shoulders were hurting and the waves were flat for a couple weeks straight. I bought a cheap all-around board on Craigslist first. After getting the courage to paddle out of the harbor I caught a couple small waves and was hooked. Now I own a 14' narrow race board for the flat water, a 9' surf SUP, and I fish the kelp from my all-around.

I only take out the surf SUP on small or mushy days, but I catch so much flack from the guys in the line-up that I bought a waterproof case and headphones for my iPod so I can't hear them. It's just verbal abuse, nobody laying in the water is a real threat to a 200lb guy standing up with a paddle in his hand LOL! :D

I know - don't knock it until you try it, but it seems to me why should I go spend $1,000-$1,500 on an SUP setup when I can just drag out my kayak? Either paddle or surf - it seems silly to me to surf with a paddle. Kind of like snowboarding with a ski pole.
