By then you'll be in Hilton Head, Craig?

Very cool Peter. Thanks for sharing. I didn't realize he'd not surfed in Europe. A bit surprising. Maybe when Endless Summer III comes out....who knows.

You need to do this, Peter. I have a couple Harold Iggy boards and am glad for those. You never know.

Ole still shaping surfboards on Maui @ 88. His long board designs run circles around the other big name shapers, IMO ..

I love the shaping room. The combination of functional art, design refinement and craftsmanship is tangible..
Have had the chance to watch some masters at work. It becomes a very choreographed process.

I guess appreciating the pleasure of well shaped boards adds to the respect of the shaping process.

No doubt the product of shaping machines are precise. But the process of communicating with the craftsman shaper and enjoying the outcome is great, especially thru a series of boards.

Cheers Richard

Are you in CR Peter? Very cool to be there as a master craftsman does his thing.

Your Denver locale reminds me of my year of college @ UoD, where I shaped 2 boards in our basement. One was an absolute dog, but the other worked surprisingly well. I took that 8'0" semi back to Hawaii with me, and rode it for years before selling it to my buddy. It was later stolen (which in a weird way boosted my ego ;^)

Witches Rock? I'd love to retire in CR. Probably not Tamarindo, but do love it there....

Never been to CR myself - just Nicaragua. I know there's a difference. I hope to get there one day. As well as Mexico. Those are on my bucket list when I get that hampster wheel shrunk down a litle bit more.

In the meantime - living where I live isn't so bad......

Fred Hemmings on Lemoore: "The Best Surfing in California Is Here"

Ali Shrode
Friday, May 4, 2018

Friday in Lemoore, Calif., seven legendary organizing members of professional surfing gathered to open the first-ever WSL Founders' Cup of Surfing, which runs May 5 - 6. Fred Hemmings, Randy Rarick, Peter Townend, Shaun Tomson, Wayne Bartholomew, Mark Richards, and Ian Cairns all played major roles in surfing's rich history. The crew of pioneers got their own surf session at the WSL Surf Ranch ahead of the competition, which will get underway Saturday.

"It goes without saying but I'm supporting Team USA," said Hemmings, who was the 1968 World Champion and has also served as a Hawaii state senator. "The majority of the surfers on that team grew up surfing at the same spots that I learned how to surf at 60 years ago in Hawaii. But putting aside my bias, the Brazilians are looking amazing. They're on fire right now."

In preparation for the 2020 Olympics, the WSL Founders' Cup of Surfing will be the first-ever nation vs. nation competition. While many of the early icons had high ambitions for the sport of surfing, none of them saw the WSL Surf Ranch coming. It will be a groundbreaking weekend in the sport in part because no one could have predicted that professional surfing would be where it's at today. To look out and see a perfect wave in the middle of the desert? It's surreal.

"I was a little boy in Waikiki Beach in the 50s," continued Hemmings. "We made the transition from wood boards to foam boards. And at the time I thought, ‘It doesn't get any better than this.' Then I went to the World Surfing Championships in the 1960s in Puerto Rico and the sport was making the transition to short boards. Even then I said, ‘It doesn't get any better than this.' I retired from surfing and started pro surfing at the Pipeline Masters and I said, ‘It doesn't get any better than this.'

"And now fast forward to what Kelly has done with this machine, which is something out of some futuristic movie or something. There are beautiful waves in Lemoore, California. The best surfing in California right now is right here. And you can't help but think, 'It won't get any better than this'. But it will. It always does."

Watch the WSL Founders' Cup of Surfing live daily on the WSL and Bleacher Report (US only).

Fred was there for the grand opening of the Surfatorium in Tempe, back in '69 or '70, too. Artificial wave pools have come a LONG way since then.

Some GREAT shots of grom longboarding @ Canoes, Waikiki:

I remember reading about that in one of the surf mags I think, Bill. Do you remember the cover photo of MR by Norman Seeff?

I have always been a HUGE fan of MR. I have a collage I made with all MR on one side and a mix on the other side (it's a 2 sided collage) and coated with resin. I designed it to use when I'm sketching as a portable lap-table thingy.

Thanks Bill.....the traffic can get a little congested at times - you have to use strategies at certain times of the year and day and week. Stop by if you ever get over this way.

I've been trying to re-organize a lot of stuff that I have accumulated over the years. I have a LOT of memorabilia. I mean...you wouldn't believe how much. A lot of this stuff I forgot I even had!

Here's one item for example:

Stop by if you ever get over this way.

I think I only read Surfers World and an Australian one called Tracks, so I can't remember that cover.

I had a MR twin that I bought in Sydney in the late '70s. I remember it was a bit of a wild ride compared with the pin tail single fins I was used to LOL

I tried to google the pic of him sitting in his car that I remember, but no luck.

Ha, you never know. Us kiwis travel quite a lot.
